Pestano posted a 10.80 ERA in May, rebounded with a 2.08 ERA in June, but has struggled again to the tune of a 4.91 ERA in July. Indians manager Terry Francona removed Pestano from high-leverage situations, but it appears that Cleveland would prefer to do without him in low-leverage situations at the moment as well. |

Mon Jul 8 2013 | 16:55 | Pestano moved out of eighth inning role |
Indians manager Terry Francona has removed Vinnie Pestano from his eighth inning role. |
Pestano was knocked around in his most recent appearance on Sunday and hasn't been nearly as effective this season as he has been in the past, so Francona hopes that using him in lower-leverage situations will improve his confidence. Joe Smith will serve as the main set-up man for closer Chris Perez for now. |

Vinnie Pestano worked a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his fifth save of the season on Wednesday. |
Pestano set down the Orioles in order in the ninth, striking out two in the outing. Despite his shakiness at times, the right-hander has now notched five saves without blowing an opportunity in Chris Perez's stead. With Perez primed to rejoin the team on Thursday it will be interesting to see how Indians manager Terry Francona handles the ninth inning, but we're expecting Perez to inherit his old job upon return. |

Mon Jun 24 2013 | 22:41 | Vinnie Pestano notches fourth save |
Vinnie Pestano pitched a scoreless ninth Monday against the Orioles for his fourth save. |
This one wasn't quite so hairy as Saturday's, when Pestano gave up two runs before escaping with a save, but he did give up a walk and a single with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate in a 5-2 game. He then got Manny Machado to line out to end it. Pestano's run in the closer's role will likely end soon with Chris Perez on the way back. |

Sat Jun 22 2013 | 23:26 | Pestano shaky in earning third save vs. Twins |
Vinnie Pestano allowed two runs but picked up his third save of the season on Saturday. |
Pestano didn't inspire a ton of confidence, as he allowed a leadoff double to Justin Morneau and later gave up a solo home run to Chris Parmelee, but he got Josh Willingham to strike out with the tying run on first to end the game. It's not as though the Indians are rife with better options currently, but Pestano's high-wire act may wear out its welcome soon. |

Tue Jun 18 2013 | 22:26 | Pestano earns 2nd save, Tribe tops Royals 4-3 |
Vinnie Pestano got through a tumultuous ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season on Tuesday as the Indians beat the Royals 4-3. |
Pestano managed the rare feat of allowing three hits and a walk while throwing a scoreless inning, as the Royals' baserunning miscues aided the cause. With Chris Perez working his way back Pestano's days closing games could be numbered, but Perez is no sure thing to be effective upon returning. The situation is worth monitoring in the days following Perez's activation. |

Mon May 27 2013 | 11:37 | Pestano to close while Chris Perez is injured |
Indians manager Terry Francona announced Monday that Vinnie Pestano will get the first crack at save opportunities while Chris Perez (shoulder) is sidelined. |
Pestano has not been very good this year and is experiencing diminished velocity that may be related to a right elbow injury, but he's been the "next in line" guy in Cleveland for the past few seasons and so it's only fair that he gets the first shot. If Pestano can't cut it, the Indians will turn to either Joe Smith or Cody Allen. |

Sun May 26 2013 | 13:33 | Vinnie Pestano's velocity is down |
Vinnie Pestano's fastball was clocked in the 88-89 mph range during Saturday's appearance against the Red Sox. |
He usually sits in the 92-93 mph range. The drop in velocity showed in his results, as Pestano gave up a career-high four runs and four hits in the outing. It was his fourth appearance since coming off the DL with an elbow injury, so there's naturally some worry that he might not be healthy. Indians manager Terry Francona insists the reliever is healthy, though. "In spring training, when guys start throwing, they have to build arm speed," said Francona. "That's what he's doing now... There are no medical issues. We got him through that. Now we just have to get him back to being Vinnie." |

"He'll probably only spend another week [on the DL] then be good to go," Francona said. "He got a [MRI] scan and it was clear." Pestano's DL move was backdated, so he'll be eligible to return on May 16. The elbow issue he's dealing with has been a problem off and on for a couple years, but the Indians are hoping this was just a small bump in the road. |

There's still no word, though, about whether he'll be placed on the disabled list. "The decisions and everything else are out of my control," Pestano said. The reliever is nursing some elbow soreness, a condition he's had to deal with off and on over the last couple seasons. |

The Indians could place Vinnie Pestano (elbow) on the disabled list. |
Pestano has dealt with a recurring elbow issue over the last two seasons, and it's left him unavailable over the last two days. He was able to play long-toss and throw 15 pitches off the mound Saturday, but he'll wait to see how he feels Sunday morning before a decision is made. Pestano hasn't pitched since Monday, so he could only miss about a week with a backdated DL move. |
