Fri Feb 15 2013 | 10:13 | Delmon Young likely to begin season on DL |
Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Delmon Young (ankle) is "likely" to start the season on the disabled list. |
Gelb says it's "unknown" when Young will be ready to play in Grapefruit League games, "or if he will at all." The 27-year-old underwent ankle surgery in November to remove bone spurs as well as smooth out cartilage, and while it was reported at the time that he would be 100 percent by February, it's clear that his recovery is going slower than expected. That means that two, rather than one, of Domonic Brown, Darin Ruf and John Mayberry Jr. will likely start on Opening Day. |

Tue Jan 22 2013 | 16:25 | Delmon Young to play RF for Phillies |
Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said on Tuesday that Delmon Young will play right field. |
Young is a really poor defensive outfielder, so it's odd that the Phillies aren't sticking him in left. This is also another shot to the development of Domonic Brown, who could struggle to find regular playing time. |

Tue Jan 22 2013 | 14:53 | Phillies ink Delmon Young to one-year deal |
Phillies signed OF Delmon Young to a one-year, $750,000 contract. |
The deal includes some performance-based incentives. The Phillies were in the market for a right-handed hitting outfielder, so they are hoping that Young can fit the bill. While the 27-year-old has produced a measly .702 OPS over the past two seasons, he owns an .824 OPS against southpaws for his career. He'd be a better fit on an American League team where he could continue to DH, but it's a reasonable gamble given the modest price tag. Young figures to play left field at least part of the time, which likely means less at-bats for Domonic Brown. |

The Phillies have also considered signing Scott Hairston or trading for Angels' outfielder Vernon Wells. |

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees have "no interest" in free agent Delmon Young. |
The Yankees are looking to add a right-handed hitter with some pop, but Young is a bad defensive outfielder and there are too many other players on the New York roster who require regular appearances at DH. Young drew some interest earlier this offseason from the Mariners but has otherwise struggled to attract a healthy market. |
