Fri Apr 27 201814:57FANTASY PLAYS: Pickups, streamers for week in baseball
It's that time of the fantasy baseball season where owners really need to evaluate their rosters and see which struggling players are worth keeping on their teams, and which ones should be kicked to the curb.Let's take a look at players that can help you in the long term, as well as guys who are worth streaming this upcoming week to take advantage of good matchups.PLAYERS TO PICK UPJaCoby Jones, OF (5 percent owned in Yahoo), and Dixon Machado, 2B/SS (2 percent), Detroit: Much was made in the offseason about the elevated hard-hit rates in Detroit in 2017. This year, those rates have sustained, but two new names have raised eyebrows with how hard they are hitting the ball. JaCoby Jones has a 50 percent hard hit ball percentage, which would be seventh among hitters if he qualified. Meanwhile Machado is 25th in baseball with his 44.1 percent. Machado's numbers haven't translated over to fantasy success yet but Jones' have. Both should at least be on watch lists in 12-team leagues and deeper.Mike... [More]

Fri Mar 23 201813:49Will flip-flopping fielders be baseball's latest trend?
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — New Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler's progressive approach includes a strategy straight from a slow-pitch softball league.Kapler plans to flip-flop outfielders in the middle of an inning to put his best defensive player in the position where the spray charts indicate a batter is most likely to hit the ball. This isn't the typical infield shift and old-school thinkers will scoff at the idea, but Kapler feels so strongly about it that he has these words written on a white board in his office:"We know that different players have different skills. One hitter may crush fastballs. Another may hammer change-ups. That doesn't mean either is a better hitter. They just have different strengths. Outfielders are similar. Whenever we have a chance to maximize a man's strengths to get an additional out, we'll do so."Strange shifts are nothing new to baseball. The influx of analytics has led managers to try different things.Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon tried a four-man... [More]

Fri Mar 9 201818:02Red Sox LHP Sale pitches 4 innings in spring debut
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — The Boston Red Sox want Chris Sale to go slowly this spring. The ace left-hander is getting used to the plan.Sale pitched four innings of one-run ball in his first spring training game Friday against Miami. He allowed two hits, struck out five and walked none in Boston's 5-4 loss. The Red Sox are monitoring Sale's workload this spring, so he began his preparations for the season in minor league games on the backfields of the team's training complex. He got into the upper 90s in the first inning against the Marlins, and manager Alex Cora and pitching coach Dana LeVangie suggested it might be a good idea to dial it down."Had to change it up after that," Sale said. "I'm still working on that build up. You get out there the first time in front of a crowd and you want to go out there and compete. But you have to understand the end goal. We kind of came to that together. It's not easy to dial it back and trust the process."I have 100 percent trust in our coaching staff,... [More]
Mon Feb 26 201817:49Lone remaining Marlins big bat, Bour embracing new role
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — There are few fixed rules regarding the Miami Marlins' early-morning spring training clubhouse schedule.Players are free to grab an omelet, maybe take some extra swings in the batting cage and socialize. But when "Runaround Sue" blares over the clubhouse sound system, it's time to get down to business."I play a song every day like five minutes before the morning meeting so people can know, if the song is playing, we've got five minutes before we have the meeting," said first baseman Justin Bour, who selected and plays that early '60s Dion classic for no particular reason.Nationally best known for his doughnut-fueled All-Star Game Home Run Derby battle with eventual winner Aaron Judge and for, from time-to-time, standing on his head during pregame stretch, the 6-foot-3, 265-pound Bour won't ever be confused, either in stature or demeanor, with Miami CEO Derek Jeter. But if Jeter is the new face of the Miami franchise, the 29-year-old Bour is probably the most distinguishable... Thu Feb 8 201817:51Lots of scrambling for jobs at Marlins spring training
MIAMI (AP) — A group of Miami Marlins fans angered by new CEO Derek Jeter's offseason salary dump wants to protest by not attending games.Wait. Hasn't South Florida been boycotting the Marlins for years?A franchise notorious for poor attendance and losing records might achieve new lows in both categories this year under Jeter. He gutted the lineup by trading four starters, including major league home run champion Giancarlo Stanton, antagonizing an already small fan base. The result will likely be another long season, but spring training should actually be interesting as manager Don Mattingly sorts out the numerous prospects acquired for Stanton, stolen base champ Dee Gordon, All-Star left fielder Marcell Ozuna and center fielder Christian Yelich.___Some things to know as the Marlins report to spring training in Jupiter, Florida:NEW LOOKPayroll paring was the primary motive for the trades, and the only established player the Marlins obtained was infielder Starlin Castro in the Stanton deal...
