Sun Mar 27 201108:58Matt Albers favorite for final bullpen spot?
Matt Albers could be the favorite for the final spot in the bullpen because he's out of options.
Alfredo Aceves and Hideki Okajima do have options, which could work against them. Reports surfaced this past week that Albers had signed with a Japanese team, but that clearly wasn't the case. He's had a fantastic spring, posting a 2.38 ERA with a 13/0 K/BB ratio over 11 1/3 innings.

Wed Mar 23 201116:58Red Sox release Albers to Japanese team
Red Sox released RHP Matt Albers.
Albers was inked to a one-year, $875,000 contract in December shortly after the Orioles non-tendered him, but he wasn't going to make Boston's big league roster and has apparently found a better opportunity in Japan.

Sat Mar 12 201108:56Albers impressing Red Sox
Red Sox manager Terry Francona has been impressed by Matt Albers this spring.
The former Oriole has allowed just one run over 5 1/3 innings this spring and has walked no one while striking out five. Albers has always had decent stuff, but his results at the major league level have been inconsistent, at best, and he's also dealt with injuries. He's out of options, which could work in his favor in gaining one of the final spots in the bullpen.

Thu Dec 16 201016:53Red Sox ink Matt Albers to one-year deal
Red Sox signed RHP Matt Albers to a one-year contract.
Albers was non-tendered by the Orioles earlier this month after registering a 4.52 ERA and 49/34 K/BB ratio over 75 2/3 innings in 2010. He'll probably serve as organizational relief depth for Boston.
Wed Dec 15 201010:53Red Sox getting close to signing Albers
A source familiar with the negotiations tells Alex Speier of WEEI.com that the Red Sox are "getting close" to signing Matt Albers, but that a deal is "not done."
Peter Gammons of NESN reported Tuesday night that the Red Sox had signed Albers, but the contract has not been finalized. Albers, who turns 28 in January, was non-tendered by the Orioles this month after posting a 4.52 ERA and 49/34 K/BB ratio over 75 2/3 innings in 2010. He has an unremarkable 5.11 ERA over 181 big league appearances, but throws in the low-90s and induces his fair share of groundballs.

Tue Dec 14 201019:15Report: Red Sox sign RHP Albers
Peter Gammons of NESN reports that the Red Sox have signed right-hander Matt Albers.
We're assuming this is a minor league deal. The Orioles recently non-tendered Albers after he posted an underwhelming 4.52 ERA and 49/34 K/BB ratio over 75 2/3 innings this past season. He'll likely function as organizational depth.

Thu Dec 2 201018:05O's non-tender righty Matt Albers
Orioles non-tendered RHP Matt Albers.
Not a surprise. Albers posted an ugly 4.52 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 75 2/3 innings this season but still would have gained a raise over the $680,000 that he earned in 2010. He wasn't worth that kind of payout.
