Thu Dec 12 201308:28Benoit seeking $7-10 million per season
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that Joaquin Benoit is seeking $7-10 million per season.
It's not an unreasonable request after Benoit saved a career-high 24 games with the Tigers this past season while posting a 2.01 ERA and 73/22 K/BB ratio over 67 innings. Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reported late Wednesday that teams believe the Indians, Cubs, Mariners, Padres and Yankees are his most likely landing spots.

Thu Dec 12 201300:06Five teams believed to be in lead for Benoit
Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan hears teams believe the Indians, Cubs, Mariners, Padres and Yankees are the most likely destinations for Joaquin Benoit.
Four of those teams have a need for a closer, and the Padres could use some insurance for the oft-injured Huston Street. The Orioles and Rockies have also checked in on the 36-year-old. The Tigers didn't seem to believe in the right-hander as a closing option, but it seems there are plenty of teams that do.

Wed Dec 11 201319:22Orioles in discussions with Benoit, Axford
A source tells Jon Morosi of FOX Sports that the Orioles are still in discussions with Joaquin Benoit and John Axford.
The O's have a vacancy at closer after dealing Jim Johnson to the A's earlier this winter. The 36-year-old Benoit saved a career-high 24 games in 2013, posting a 2.01 ERA and 73/22 K/BB ratio over 67 innings with the Tigers. The Rockies, Yankees and Mariners, among others, have expressed interest in the right-hander in recent days as well.

Wed Dec 11 201309:51Rockies in talks with reliever Joaquin Benoit
According to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports, the Rockies are in talks with free agent Joaquin Benoit.
Morosi says the two sides "remain apart" on salary, but that could change as the winter rolls on. Benoit is also drawing interest from the Yankees, Mariners and a couple other teams. He was awful in the postseason but posted a 2.01 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 73/22 K/BB ratio across 67 innings of regular-season work for the Tigers in 2013.

Tue Dec 10 201321:22Yankees considering reliever Joaquin Benoit
USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Yankees "have had lots of internal discussions" about Joaquin Benoit.
Nightengale says the Yanks "would love to grab two relievers," and Benoit appears to be at or near the top of their list. It's unclear whether they'd allow him to compete with David Robertson for the closing job or if they'd view him more in a setup role. Benoit put up a 2.01 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 73/22 K/BB ratio in 67 innings of work for the Tigers in 2013.

Sun Dec 8 201323:21Mariners interested in Joaquin Benoit
Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Mariners are interested in free agent reliever Joaquin Benoit.
The Mariners are known to be seeking upgrades to their bullpen, and Benoit would certainly fit the bill. The 36-year-old seized the Tigers closer role this season, posting a 2.01 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 73/22 K/BB ratio in 67 innings of work. If signed, he'd presumably be the favorite for saves in front of Danny Farquhar.

Wed Dec 4 201315:55Dombrowski: Benoit expected to leave Tigers
Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Wednesday that he expects Joaquin Benoit to sign elsewhere as a closer.
Dombrowski was asked whether Benoit could return as a set-up man for Joe Nathan, but he figures to draw interest as a closer in free agency after he posted a 2.01 ERA, 21 saves and a 73/22 K/BB ratio over 67 innings this year. Of course, there are plenty of other closers on the market and only 30 jobs to go around, so he might have to lower his expectations.

Sat Nov 9 201311:50Phillies expected to look at Benoit, Mujica
According to Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly, the Phillies will be in the market for an experienced setup man to operate in front of Jonathan Papelbon, with Joaquin Benoit and Edward Mujica as two probable options.
The Phillies would prefer to have someone with closing experience work the eighth inning in front of Papelbon, to serve as an insurance policy. Both of these veteran right-handers were thrust into the full-time closer role for the first time in 2013, and passed with flying colors. Rather than meet the lofty asking prices on the free agent market though, they may be inclined to look within at Jake Diekman or B.J. Rosenburg to take on an increased role in the bullpen.

Sun Nov 3 201318:49Tigers will pursue an experienced closer
Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Sunday that his team will pursue an experienced closer this Winter, with Joaquin Benoit in that mix as well.
The Tigers bullpen was a major question mark for the Tigers in 2013 until Benoit assumed the closer's role an ran with it. With the Tigers declining their option on Jose Veras earlier in the week, there are several openings ready to be filled at the back end of the bullpen. Joe Nathan appears to be the best option on the free agent market, and is someone that the Tigers have shown interest in before.

Sun Oct 13 201300:23Benoit earns save in Tigers' ALCS Gm. 1 win
Joaquin Benoit earned the save in the Tigers' ALCS Game 1 defeat of the Red Sox on Saturday.
Benoit actually spoiled what would have been the first combined no-hitter in postseason history when he allowed a Daniel Nava single with one out in the top of the ninth inning. But the Detroit closer erased that threat by retiring Stephen Drew and Xander Bogaerts. The Tigers are up 1-0 in the best-of-seven series.

Thu Oct 10 201320:58Joaquin Benoit open to returning as setup man
Joaquin Benoit said Thursday that he's open to returning to the Tigers next season even if it means being a setup man.
An impending free agency, Benoit has pitched well in a closer role, but the Tigers are grooming Bruce Rondon to take over the ninth inning eventually. "I think whatever decision they make is going to be great," Benoit said. "If they decide to go with me as a closer, I'm happy. If they decide to give me another chance and help him, being his setup man, I would be happy to." Even though he's 36, Benoit should be able to get a multi-year deal from someone.

Tue Sep 24 201300:17Joaquin Benoit finally takes blown save
Joaquin Benoit took his first blown save of the season after giving up a Brian Dozier homer in the ninth Monday versus the Twins.
Jim Leyland asked Benoit to get five outs in a one-run game after Jose Veras got into trouble in the eighth. He got the first two to finish the eighth, but Dozier's homer made it a 3-3 game in the ninth. Benoit had been a perfect 22-for-22 saving games this season and 31-for-31 without blowing a lead if you want to count his holds.

Benoit has very quietly had himself a tremendous season at the back end of the Tigers bullpen, posting a 2.01 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 63/19 K/BB ratio over 58 1/3 innings. He's now successfully converted all 19 of his save chances on the season.

Sun Sep 1 201316:31Benoit walks 3, allows grand slam to Aviles
Joaquin Benoit melted down on Sunday against the Indians, allowing four runs on three walks and a homer.
Benoit entered the top of the ninth attempting to sustain a 0-0 tie. Instead, he walked the first two batters he faced. Asdrubal Cabrera sacrificed both runners up one base, so Benoit intentionally walked Jason Kubel to set up Mike Aviles' grand slam. Benoit remains a perfect 17-for-17 in save chances, but he falls to 4-1 and his ERA jumped from 1.48 to 2.13. Entering the game, Benoit had allowed just two runs since the beginning of July.

Benoit set down all three batters he faced in the ninth inning, tallying one strikeout. He has a stellar 1.54 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 52 2/3 total frames this season and should be an elite fantasy closer for the stretch run.

Joaquin Benoit got five outs in a two-run game for a save Wednesday against the White Sox.
After coming on with two on in the eighth, Benoit fanned Adam Dunn and Avisail Garcia to end the inning. He then allowed a single and a walk to start the ninth, but he got out of that, too. He's a perfect 15-for-15 in save chances, and he's allowed just one run since the beginning of July.

Joaquin Benoit allowed a run but struck out two to earn his 14th save of the season on Wednesday.
The run was Benoit's first allowed since June 23, but it didn't lead to his first blown save of the year. Despite not being installed as the closer until the middle of the season, Benoit has been one of the best relievers in baseball this year. He now owns a 1.53 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 47 innings.

Joaquin Benoit slammed the door on the White Sox on Friday, protecting a one-run advantage and earning his 11th save of the season.
He allowed a two-out walk to Alex Rios, but was able to get Adam Dunn to ground out to end the proceedings. He's been lights-out in the closer role for the Tigers, posting a 1.43 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 52/13 K/BB ratio in 44 innings on the season.
