MIAMI (AP) — Third baseman Derek Dietrich has agreed to a $2.9 million contract for 2018 with the Miami Marlins.Shortstop Miguel Rojas agreed to a $1.18 million contract. Both players avoided arbitration.Catcher J.T. Realmuto, first baseman Justin Bour and right-hander Dan Straily are headed for arbitration after they were unable to reach contract agreements with the team by Friday's deadline.Realmuto asked for $3.5 million and the Marlins offered $2.9 million. Bour sought $3.4 million and was offered $3 million. Straily wanted $3.55 million and Miami countered at $3,375,000.Dietrich had career highs of 13 homers, 53 RBIs and 135 games last year, and batted .249. 3B Derek Dietrich hit his 12th home run of the season and recorded his first multi-hit game since Aug. 26 Saturday in a 7-4 victory over Milwaukee. Dietrich had just two hits in his previous six games, spanning 18 at-bats.

3B Derek Dietrich gave the Marlins a 3-2 lead on Tuesday night against the Phillies with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning, his 11th on the season. It was his third against the Phillies this season, the most for him against any opponent. It was also his fourth career home run at Citizens Bank Park, his most at any visiting ballpark. He is currently batting .242 with 45 RBIs.

3B Derek Dietrich, 28, is in his fifth season in the majors, but this is the most extensive playing time he has received (career-high 361 at-bats). However, his splits this year go against convention. A lefty hitter, Dietrich has struggled against right-handers (.228 batting average, 704 OPS in 333 plate appearances). He has handled lefties better than expected: .313 batting average and .836 OPS in 79 plate appearances. Making Dietrich even harder to figure out is the fact that for his career, his splits are more normal: .773 OPS vs. right-handers and .660 vs. left-handers. So what is Dietrich, exactly? It probably has been tough for the Marlins to figure out, although it appears he's a utility player with some pop who can make spot starts at second, third and first.
