Mon Feb 26 201817:49Lone remaining Marlins big bat, Bour embracing new role
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — There are few fixed rules regarding the Miami Marlins' early-morning spring training clubhouse schedule.Players are free to grab an omelet, maybe take some extra swings in the batting cage and socialize. But when "Runaround Sue" blares over the clubhouse sound system, it's time to get down to business."I play a song every day like five minutes before the morning meeting so people can know, if the song is playing, we've got five minutes before we have the meeting," said first baseman Justin Bour, who selected and plays that early '60s Dion classic for no particular reason.Nationally best known for his doughnut-fueled All-Star Game Home Run Derby battle with eventual winner Aaron Judge and for, from time-to-time, standing on his head during pregame stretch, the 6-foot-3, 265-pound Bour won't ever be confused, either in stature or demeanor, with Miami CEO Derek Jeter. But if Jeter is the new face of the Miami franchise, the 29-year-old Bour is probably the most distinguishable... 3B Derek Dietrich gave the Marlins a 3-2 lead on Tuesday night against the Phillies with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning, his 11th on the season. It was his third against the Phillies this season, the most for him against any opponent. It was also his fourth career home run at Citizens Bank Park, his most at any visiting ballpark. He is currently batting .242 with 45 RBIs.

3B Derek Dietrich, 28, is in his fifth season in the majors, but this is the most extensive playing time he has received (career-high 361 at-bats). However, his splits this year go against convention. A lefty hitter, Dietrich has struggled against right-handers (.228 batting average, 704 OPS in 333 plate appearances). He has handled lefties better than expected: .313 batting average and .836 OPS in 79 plate appearances. Making Dietrich even harder to figure out is the fact that for his career, his splits are more normal: .773 OPS vs. right-handers and .660 vs. left-handers. So what is Dietrich, exactly? It probably has been tough for the Marlins to figure out, although it appears he's a utility player with some pop who can make spot starts at second, third and first.
