Wed Oct 1 2014 | 12:35 | Overbay will likely retire in offseason |
Overbay will likely retire in the offseason, MLB Network Radio reports. |
Overbay is a free agent this offseason, and it sounds as though it would take a lot of convincing to keep him from retiring. He spent most of the 2014 season as a bench player at first base and was an occasional spot starter. Overbay posted a .233/.328/.333 batting line with the Brewers this season, collecting four home runs and 35 RBI over 258 at-bats. |
Fri Sep 12 2014 | 23:46 | Overbay 1-2 with one RBI against Reds on Friday night |
Overbay went 1-for-2 with one RBI against the Reds on Friday night. |
Although he doesn't get a ton of opportunities coming off the bench as a pinch hitter, Overbay has turned into a clutch hitter. He knocked in the winning run for the Brewers in the bottom of the ninth inning as he singled to deep left center driving in Logan Schafer from third base. |
Sat Aug 16 2014 | 02:49 | Overbay had pinch-hit bases-clearing double on Friday against Do... |
Overbay had a pinch-hit bases-clearing double on Friday against the Dodgers as he picked up three RBI on the night. |
The 37-year old first baseman doesn't see very many opportunities for the Brewers coming off the bench, but he made the most of this at-bat. Overbay had a resurgent season in 2013, but has only managed to net slightly over 200 at-bats in 2014. |
Tue Jul 8 2014 | 23:37 | Overbay's slam not enough against the Phils |
Lyle Overbay crushed a first-inning grand slam, but it wasn't enough as the Brewers were defeated by the Phillies on Tuesday. |
Overbay's salami was his only hit in five at-bats, staking the Brewers to a 5-1 lead at the time. It was his first home run since June 22. The first baseman otherwise hasn't done much at the plate in his limited playing time, slashing .236/.317/.352 with four home runs and 25 RBI in 186 plate appearances. |

Lyle Overbay went 0-for-3 with a walk on Monday, leaving him 2-for-20 this season. |
The Brewers have started giving Mark Reynolds some starts against righties, and it's a trend that should continue with Reynolds off to a nice start. Overbay isn't worth owning in NL-only leagues. |

Mon Mar 31 2014 | 17:09 | Lyle Overbay goes hitless in opener |
Lyle Overbay, making his first official appearance for the Brewers since 2005, went 0-for-3 against the Braves on Opening Day. |
The Brewers would be foolish to use Overbay and Mark Reynolds in a straight platoon at first base, but that might be the way it plays out initially. Overbay hit .240/.295/.393 with Yankee Stadium helping him last year, and at 37, he's not getting any younger. |

Sat Mar 29 2014 | 08:48 | Brewers select the contract of Lyle Overbay |
Brewers selected the contract of INF Lyle Overbay from Triple-A Nashville. |
The 37-year-old slashed just .222/.364/.267 with two RBI and 16 strikeouts in 45 at-bats this spring, but was able to land a spot on the Opening Day roster as a platoon option at first base. He holds no fantasy value outside of NL-only formats. |

Brewers signed 1B Lyle Overbay to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. |
Overbay hit .289/.376/.464 with 35 home runs and 159 RBI in 317 games for Milwaukee during the 2004 and 2005 seasons, but that was his prime and he's a very different player now at age 36 (almost 37). He'll be competing for a share of the action at first base. |

Thu Jan 16 2014 | 17:13 | Phillies among teams talking to Overbay |
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Phillies are among the teams talking to Lyle Overbay about a minor league deal. |
Overbay, who turns 37 later this month, batted .240/.295/.393 with 14 home runs over 486 plate appearances last year with the Yankees. He's unlikely to find similar playin time in 2014, but he could be useful as a backup first baseman and left-handed bench bat. |

Sun Jan 12 2014 | 10:48 | Astros considering signing Lyle Overbay |
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that Lyle Overbay "remains on the Astros' short list of low-cost first basemen." |
Cafardo adds that Houston "would love to have a veteran who could push Brett Wallace." Currently, Wallace is in line to compete with Marc Krauss, Jesus Guzman, Japhet Amador and Jonathan Singleton for the first base gig. Overbay batted just .240/.295/.393 last season for the Yankees but did slug 14 homers. Whoever winds up as the Astros' Opening Day first baseman will just be keeping the seat warm until Singleton is ready. |
