RHP Scott Oberg pitched a scoreless ninth. It was his first appearance since Aug. 20, when he pitched one inning against Milwaukee. Since being recalled Aug. 18 from Triple-A Albuquerque, Oberg has pitched 2 1/3 innings in three games.

"All indication from our minor league people was he was throwing the ball well, which we expected," manager Bud Black said. "So hopefully that carries over to a big league game."

He has been used in high-traffic situations lately, inheriting 13 runners in his past five outings and stranding 12.

He had blood clots removed from his right forearm and then underwent another procedure to reposition his axillary artery. He can resume his regular offseason program around Nov. 1 and should be ready for spring training.

RHP Scott Oberg, 26, was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to begin his third stint with the Rockies. He retired the side in order in the seventh.In 27 games with Albuquerque, Oberg is 1-0 with nine saves and a 2.43 ERA. He has been particularly good lately, going 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in 18 games in June and July with six walks and 27 strikeouts in 19 innings. Before the game, manager Walt Weiss said, "He's throwing the ball really well. I'm looking forward to seeing Scotty out there." Oberg, explaining his success, said, "It's just kind of been being a little bit more consistent with everything. Getting ahead in counts and being able to execute all my pitches for the most part when I want to." In his previous nine games with the Rockies, Oberg has a 4.05 ERA. Oberg began the season with Albuquerque before the Rockies recalled him April 25. He was optioned to Albuquerque on May 20. The Rockies recalled him June 19, and Oberg flew from Albuquerque to Miami where he pitched two scoreless innings that day before being optioned the following day.

Oberg has delivered four scoreless outings in a row for the Rockies, but he's still been an overall disaster in middle relief this season. He's given up 10 homers and has a 5.68 ERA over 50.2 innings.

Oberg gave up three runs on two walks and a hit (a home run) while covering 1.1 innings in relief during Thursday's loss to the Mets.

Since his Aug. 1 call-up, Oberg has already been used seven times in less than two weeks, covering seven innings during that span. He's been mostly resigned to low-leverage mop-up duty, though, which figures to remain the case so long as he continues to serve up homers with regularity. In 37.1 innings this season, Oberg has surrendered 10 long balls and has a 6.05 ERA.

Oberg has spent much of the season with the Rockies, but has struggled a bit with the club. Following another good stint in the minors (just one run allowed over eight innings of work), he'll get another shot with the big league club. Most of the 25-year-old's action should come in the middle innings, however, making him a less valuable fantasy option.

Oberg was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.

He recorded two outs in Thursday's game to earn his eighth hold of the season. Perhaps Oberg will return shortly after the All-Star break, but the holds don't make up for his home-run issues (8 in 31.2 innings) and marginal strikeout upside.

Oberg has now given up eight long balls on the season to lead all MLB relievers in that category. Predictably, his ERA (5.55) and WHIP (1.35) have been ugly, and it wouldn't be surprising if he was soon demoted back to Triple-A Albuquerque.
