Wed Jun 27 201219:50Carpenter (shoulder) to see nerve specialist
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) will fly to Dallas on Thursday morning to meet with a nerve specialist.
The goal is to receive a fresh opinion on Carpenter's nerve issues from someone who has never examined him. The veteran right-hander had a live batting practice session canceled Monday but was able to long-toss Wednesday after he was encouraged by how he felt when he woke up. "I woke up (Tuesday) feeling a lot better," Carpenter said. "Today felt good enough to play catch. It's good. I still have a little ways to go. The way I felt two days, three days ago compared to now it's definitely at a place where it feels good, much different." The Cards are still hoping to get Carp back sometime in July, but it's not a set timetable.

Mon Jun 25 201216:46Carp has BP session nixed due to weakness
Chris Carpenter didn't throw to hitters Monday as scheduled after feeling weakness.
The Cardinals discussed the possibility of a rehab assignment if his throwing session went well on Monday, but that obviously won't happen now. While it's not a major concern, he won't throw again until the team returns home later this week.

Fri Jun 22 201215:10Chris Carpenter throws live BP
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) is scheduled to throw live batting practice Friday.
It's the next step after Carpenter got through a handful of bullpen sessions without any issues. He'll probably throw to hitters another time or two before being cleared to begin a rehab assignment. Carp is hoping to be back shortly after the All-Star break.

Wed Jun 20 201220:22Carpenter throws another bullpen session
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) threw a fourth bullpen session Wednesday and will be cleared to throw live batting practice this weekend if he doesn't have any soreness Thursday.
"The last few bullpens have been full-effort with all my pitches, making sure that I'm doing all the things I need to do to progress to that next step," Carpenter said. "I feel good. I really do. My shoulder feels good. My body feels good. The effort level has been there, too." Cards manager Mike Matheny said Carpenter has looked "sharp" during his bullpen sessions and that he's "excited" how he's progressed. If he doesn't have any setbacks, Carp should be back shortly after the All-Star break.

Mon Jun 18 201219:21Carpenter could throw to hitters this weekend
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) could be ready to throw live batting practice to teammates by this weekend.
Carpenter had a third successful bullpen session Monday and will be cleared to face hitters if he can get through another pen session Wednesday without any issues. Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes that while Carp "prefers to downplay" the results of his throwing sessions, the early indications are "overwhelmingly positive." It's still early, but things are looking good for his return shortly after the All-Star break.

Wed Jun 13 201215:11Carpenter (neck, shoulder) throws off mound
Chris Carpenter (neck, shoulder) threw 26 pitches off a mound Wednesday.
It was his first time throwing off a mound since being shut down during spring training. Carpenter said that he felt good, but we should have a better idea on his progress as he continues to build up his workload. If all goes well, he should be a factor for the Cardinals during the second half of the season.

Mon Jun 11 201209:16Carpenter (shoulder) ready for mound work
Chris Carpenter (neck, shoulder) is aiming to throw off a mound at some point this week.
"Where I'm at right now compares to where I'm at when I start preparing myself to go to spring training," Carpenter told Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I've been doing everything: strengthening my upper body, running, everything. I feel great." He's currently on track to return in about five weeks, but there's no guarantee that the veteran right-hander will be able to avoid setbacks.

Sun Jun 10 201210:12Chris Carpenter moved to 60-day DL
Cardinals transferred RHP Chris Carpenter from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
It doesn't change his timetable, as Carp has already missed 60 days and could theoretically be activated at any time. The veteran right-hander has resumed throwing, and the latest reports on him have been positive, but he won't be back before the All-Star break.

Sun May 27 201208:30Chris Carpenter to start playing catch Monday
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) will begin playing catch Monday.
Carp recently began throwing a weighted ball into a net and felt no discomfort from a nerve condition that started in his neck and led to shoulder weakness. It appears that he's a little ahead of schedule, as the veteran righty wasn't projected to resume a throwing program until at least mid-June. "I'll be excited when I get back on the mound out there. At this point in time, I thought I was already past that," Carpenter said. "Right now, it's hard to know what to expect. I'll say it's exciting to the extent that it's moving in the right direction."

Fri May 25 201208:36Chris Carpenter showing greater flexibility
Chris Carpenter is showing greater flexibility with his right shoulder and could be ready to begin a throwing program sometime in the next four weeks.
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said back on May 12 that Carp could start a throwing program in mid-June, which is now about three weeks away. Recent reports on the veteran righty have all been positive, but his comeback from nerve issues in his shoulder has been a slow process. He shouldn't be counted on before the All-Star break.

Sat May 12 201219:39Chris Carpenter could begin throwing in June
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told FOX Sports Midwest on Saturday that Chris Carpenter (neck, shoulder) could start a throwing program in mid-June.
Carpenter has been progressing well through a series of strengthening exercises and should be ready to take the next step in about a month. He'll still need 4-6 weeks from the time he first begins throwing, so it's looking like a late-July return is the best case scenario. The good news is Lance Lynn is excelling as a fill-in.

Mon May 7 201221:30Carpenter's return to mound 'open-ended'
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Monday that the timeline for Chris Carpenter (shoulder) to return is "open-ended."
Carpenter continues to strengthen his shoulder after neck pain and nerve issues forced him to begin the season on the disabled list, but it's estimated that he'll need a minimum of 5-6 weeks of recovery and conditioning once he's ready to return to the mound. As a result, it's increasingly unlikely that the veteran right-hander return prior to the All-Star break. Fortunately for the Cardinals, Lance Lynn has emerged during his absence.

Sat Apr 28 201214:59Carpenter (shoulder) continues to progress
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) is ''regaining strength'' but remains without a timetable to resume throwing.
"I feel like my arm is stronger," Carpenter said. "I'm regaining strength. I just don't know when I'm going to pitch." Carpenter, 37, continues to work in an exercise program, but doesn't appear close to a return. The Cardinals' medical staff will wait until he reaches pre-injury levels before clearing him to pick up a baseball.

Fri Apr 13 201213:07Still no timetable for Carpenter (shoulder)
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) is "feeling better," but remains without a timetable to resume throwing.
It's unclear if this is Carpenter's official prognosis following Thursday's "battery of tests," but it's clear he's still nowhere near a return. Once he's deemed strong enough to resume throwing, Carpenter could embark on a minor-league rehab assignment within 7-10 days. Lance Lynn will continue to hold down the fort in the Cardinals rotation.

Fri Mar 30 201208:43Mozeliak expects Carpenter back in May
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said in an interview on 590 The Fan in St. Louis Friday that he's "optimistic" Chris Carpenter (shoulder) will return sometime in May.
He added that the team would look outside the organization for help if he felt the nerve issue in Carpenter's shoulder was going to be a long-term problem, but he doesn't think it will be. It's an encouraging statement from the GM, as Carp's status had been pretty open-ended, but it sounds like he might be out only for a month or so. Lance Lynn will hold down a rotation spot in the meantime.
