Schierholtz slashed .251/.301/.470 with 21 homers and 68 RBI in his first full season with the Cubs last year. Barney is a lauded defender with experience at shortstop who won a Gold Glove at second base in 2012. |

Sat Mar 8 2014 | 19:27 | Schierholtz goes 2-for-3 with a homer in win |
Nate Schierholtz went 2-for-3 with a walk, homer, two runs and two RBI as the Cubs defeated the Reds 9-0 on Saturday. |
It was the first homer of Schierholtz's spring. Chicago's right fielder is deployed correctly by his employer -- 87 percent of his plate appearances against right-handed pitching last season -- and that's one of the reasons he's an interesting sleeper in NL-only formats. He slashed .251/.301/.470 with 21 homers and 68 RBI in his first full season with the Cubs last year. It might have been his last, too, as Chicago is expected to shop Schierholtz if he hits well enough for them to get a decent return back. |

Tue Mar 4 2014 | 19:18 | Schierholtz goes 2-for-3 against the A's |
Nate Schierholtz went 2-for-3 with a double as the Cubs defeated the Athletics 6-4 on Tuesday. |
Schierholtz took 87 percent of his plate appearances against right-handed pitching last season. He isn't very effective against same-handed pitching, so it seems likely the Cubs will use him the same way going forward. However, he might end up becoming a trade chip for the Cubs near the end of July. |

Mon Aug 19 2013 | 23:28 | Nate Schierholtz homers twice, knocks in six |
Nate Schierholtz went 3-for-4 with two homers and six RBI to lead the Cubs' offense on Monday. |
Schierholtz has 18 homers in 347 at-bats this season after hitting 24 in his first 1,275 major league at-bats. That he's gotten out of San Francisco and into a better park for power hitters has surely been a factor there, but even so, his .522 slugging percentage is a big surprise. The Cubs will be able to keep him around for next year, too. |

Thu Aug 8 2013 | 17:18 | Schierholtz homers Thursday vs. Phillies |
Nate Schierholtz launched a solo homer in Thursday's loss to the Phillies. |
His solo homer off Ethan Martin in the fourth inning was the only offense of the day for Chicago. Some have wondered why the Cubs kept Schierholtz around past the July 31 trade deadline, but they still have him under team control for another year. Perhaps they'll revisit the idea of a trade this winter, but it's conceivable he could be on the team next year. |

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that Nate Schierholtz is drawing "solid interest" in trades. |
The Cubs have been very active in the trade market this month, so it stands to reason that they would cash in on someone who is having a career year at a bargain rate. He's hit safely in four straight games, pushing his slash line to an impressive .277/.334/.521. Schierholtz, who is making just $2.25 million this season, is on the trade block and may be roaming another outfield within the next week. |
