Thu Jul 18 2013 | 18:21 | Royals option Johnny Giavotella to Triple-A |
Royals optioned 2B Johnny Giavotella to Triple-A Omaha. |
Giavotella was recalled less than three weeks ago and installed at second base, but he batted only .206/.289/.265 over 10 contests. It's a little surprising that the Royals didn't give him a longer audition, but it appears that they'll go to a combination of Chris Getz, Elliot Johnson and Miguel Tejada at second. |

Royals recalled INF Johnny Giavotella from Triple-A Omaha. |
The 25-year-old utility infielder was hitting .289/.376/.425 with seven homers and seven stolen bases before the promotion. He'll likely serve as infield depth for the Royals, but he could see some starts at second base with Chris Getz out. |

Royals optioned 2B Johnny Giavotella to Triple-A Omaha. |
The writing was on the wall after Giavotella batted just .267 in 21 games this spring. Chris Getz will open the season as the Royals' starting second baseman. |

Sat Mar 9 2013 | 18:05 | Giavotella drives in four, Royals rout Giants |
Johnny Giavotella went 3-for-4 with four RBI in the Royals' 13-2 stomping of the Giants on Saturday. |
All of Giavotella's hits were singles, but they came at opportune times. The 25-year-old should get regular time at second this season and may carry value in AL-only fantasy leagues. He's batting .318 this spring. |

Fri Mar 8 2013 | 09:49 | Giavotella, Getz to see time in outfield |
Johnny Giavotella and Chris Getz will both be used some in the outfield this spring. |
"It's not an experiment, but we want guys to be versatile, and those guys, we think, can handle it," Royals manager Ned Yost said. Both Giavotella and Getz, who are competing for the second base job, have some limited outfield experience from the minors. They're probably not going to be much more than emergency guys there during the regular season. |

Thu Feb 28 2013 | 18:44 | Giavotella knocks in two runs in win |
Johnny Giavotella singled and drove in a pair of runs in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Padres. |
Giavotella had an RBI single in the third and knocked in another run on a groundout in the fifth. Chris Getz, his competition for the second base job, delivered an RBI single of his own in the seventh. The position battle is worth watching this spring, but we see Getz as the favorite. |

Sun Jun 17 2012 | 15:39 | Giavotella could be recalled by Royals |
According to the Kansas City Star's Bob Dutton, Johnny Giavotella may have been summoned by the Royals. |
Dutton is speculating here and not reporting. Giavotella was pulled from a Triple-A Omaha game shortly after Chris Getz suffered an injury Sunday. Assuming Getz is placed on the disabled list, Giavotella can be added to the roster without waiting the mandatory 10 days, as he was sent down earlier this week. |

Royals optioned INF Johnny Giavotella to Triple-A Omaha. |
He was sent down to make room for Chris Getz's return from the disabled list. Giavotella was called up from the minors about a month and batted just .217/.260/.261 with a .521 OPS through 73 plate appearances. He should get a longer look later this summer, though. |

Wed May 30 2012 | 15:56 | Johnny Giavotella reaches three times |
Johnny Giavotella went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk versus the Indians on Wednesday. |
That's the good news. The bad is that he was picked off first base and that he committed his third error at second base. Expectations are that Giavotella will be sent back to the minors when Yuniesky Betancourt comes off the DL. |

Wed May 9 2012 | 15:07 | Royals recall Johnny Giavotella from Triple-A |
Royals recalled 2B Johnny Giavotella from Triple-A Omaha. |
After failing to make the Royals' Opening Day roster, Giavotella was hitting .331/.408/.504 with five homers, 25 RBI and a .912 OPS over 152 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. We would recommend a pickup in deeper mixed leagues if he was playing everyday, but it appears he'll be splitting playing time with Chris Getz at second base. |

Wed May 9 2012 | 12:16 | Royals expected to call up Johnny Giavotella |
The Royals are expected to recall second baseman Johnny Giavotella from Triple-A Omaha. |
The team is holding off on an announcement until he arrives from Sacramento, so if his flight runs into any delays, an official roster move may not happen until Friday. Giavotella, 24, is hitting .331/.408/.504 with five homers, 25 RBI and a .912 OPS over 152 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this season. He'll be worth considering in deeper mixed leagues if he is given regular playing time at second base. The corresponding roster move isn't yet known, but Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star notes that left-hander Jonathan Sanchez has been dealing with biceps tendinitis. |

Royals optioned INF Johnny Giavotella, OF Jarrod Dyson and RHP Vin Mazzaro to Triple-A Omaha. |
Giavotella finished last season as the regular second baseman, but was outplayed this spring by Chris Getz and Yuniesky Betancourt. Mazzaro will look to resurrect his career in the minors. Dyson is organizational depth. |

Sun Feb 19 2012 | 21:08 | Giavotella to bat second for Royals in 2012? |
Johnny Giavotella is Royals manager Ned Yost's first choice to bat in the second slot. |
"He fits the spot because he has the ability to take pitches, he drives the ball the other way and he's a guy that can hit," Yost said. "This kid has hit everywhere. And if it works out, he's the best candidate for it." Kansas City's No. 2 slot is open, due to Melky Cabrera's exit to the Giants. However, to claim it, Giavotella will first have to beat out Chris Getz for the starting second base job. Alex Gordon will likely bat leadoff again. "We'll see what develops," Yost said. "I like Gordy leading off. I like somebody with some pop in his bat coming up when the lineup comes back around. He was our best on-base guy last year, and he can do a lot of things -- drive the ball out of the park, drive the gaps, .300 hitter, takes his walks, works the pitcher. He does everything you want a leadoff guy to do." |

Mon Jan 9 2012 | 09:03 | Giavotella to be fully healthy by spring |
Johnny Giavotella (hip) is expected to be fully healthy by the start of spring training. |
The young infielder underwent hip surgery in October, but he's already working out and should have no restrictions come late February. "It's feeling well, it's progressing every day," Giavotella said Sunday. "I'm starting to run, hit and throw, so everything is going as planned. I look forward to getting back on the field." He'll be in the running for the Royals' starting second base job. |

Fri Oct 21 2011 | 15:49 | Johnny Giavotella recovering from hip surgery |
Johnny Giavotella is recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip. |
The good news is that he's expected to be fully recovered by the start of spring training. Giavotella started out hot with the Royals during his rookie season but stumbled down the stretch and wound up with a .247/.273/.376 batting line over 178 at-bats. He'll be the favorite to start at second base on Opening Day next year and possesses a decent amount of upside. |

Thu Sep 1 2011 | 17:17 | Johnny Giavotella goes 3-for-5 |
Johnny Giavotella went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI Thursday against the Tigers. |
Giavotella had been in a 4-for-29 slump that dropped his average from .281 to .237. Fortunately, manager Ned Yost has been patient with him. The Royals need to keep playing him in order to decide whether he should be their second baseman in 2012. |

Sun Aug 14 2011 | 17:36 | Giavotella has another nice day at the dish |
Johnny Giavotella went 1-for-4 with a walk and stolen base in Kansas City's loss to the White Sox on Sunday. |
The 24-year-old infielder is now batting .289 with four extra-base hits, four RBI and four stolen bases through his first 10 major-league games. He remains worth a flier in all formats. |

Sat Aug 13 2011 | 10:49 | Johnny Giavotella will be subbed for on D |
Royals manager Ned Yost plans to use Chris Getz as a defensive replacement for Johnny Giavotella late in games. |
Giavotella has held his own at the plate since being promoted, batting .267 with a homer and three steals, but he's already committed a pair of errors and is considered, to put it nicely, a work in progress in the field. "Johnny is going to get to the point where he's not going to need to be defensed for," manager Ned Yost said. "But right now, we're trying to win baseball games. We're going to take advantage of every player that we have on our roster to do that." |

Johnny Giavotella doubled and homered on Sunday, leading the Royals to a 4-3 win over the Tigers. |
Giavotella is now 5-for-11 with three extra-base hits and two RBI since making his major-league debut on Friday. If you missed out on Brett Lawrie, you could do worse for a consolation prize. |
