Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Monday that Brett Cecil will rest for a couple of days due to shoulder soreness.
Cecil pitched a scoreless inning during his last appearance on Sunday. The Blue Jays are out of the race, so they have little incentive to push him back out there.

Tue Aug 20 201317:18Cecil to be used as left-handed specialist
Brett Cecil will serve as a left-handed specialist the rest of the way to curb his workload.
Cecil has posted an outstanding 2.78 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 68/23 K/BB ratio in 58 1/3 innings this year for Toronto. The Blue Jays don't want to risk overusing the 27-year-old southpaw in what has become a lost season.

Brett Cecil has been informed that he will be on the Opening Day roster.
Cecil owns a 7.04 ERA in nine appearances this spring, but the southpaw is out of options and almost certainly wouldn't clear waivers. The Blue Jays will carry him as a middle reliever.

Thu Mar 21 201316:17Brett Cecil fans four in relief
Brett Cecil struck out four in 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief Thursday against the Rays.
The Blue Jays' best choice now might be to send down Ricky Romero, name J.A. Happ the fifth starter and carry Cecil as a middle reliever. Trading Cecil remains an option; as a durable left-hander with a bit of upside, it's doubtful he'd clear waivers.

Wed Mar 6 201316:21Brett Cecil gives up two runs to Tigers
Brett Cecil surrendered two runs in two innings out of the pen Wednesday against the Tigers.
Cecil has given up five runs in six innings now. He's out of options and the Blue Jays aren't going to want to lose him for nothing, so he has a pretty good chance of claiming a spot as a long reliever. Still, a trade might be best for both parties.

Brett Cecil gave up four runs in five innings in a no-decision against the A's on Friday.
Cecil had turned in three straight quality starts with his rotation spot on the line. Tonight's outing wasn't quite so solid, but his spot should be safe for now, even though he's gone five straight outings without a victory.

Brett Cecil was quality in Sunday's loss to the Tigers, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks in 6 2/3 innings.
He struck out seven. Cecil was done in by one big mistake, a three-run blast off the bat of Jhonny Peralta in the second inning. The quality start was his third straight, and fourth in five July outings. He'll bring a 5.56 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 41/18 K/BB ratio compiled over 45 1/3 innings into the month of August.

Tue Jul 17 201222:35Cecil solid in losing effort vs. Yankees
Brett Cecil turned in a decent performance in Tuesday's loss to the Yankees, allowing three runs on six hits over his six frames.
Cecil racked up five strikeouts while walking two. All of the damage came on one mistake pitch to Andruw Jones in the second inning, which was promptly deposited into the seats in left field. Cecil hasn't pitched very well over his first six starts for the Blue Jays, going 2-2 with a horrifying 6.34 ERA. He'll look to carry over the momentum from this decent outing when he takes on the Athletics at home on Tuesday.

He struck out three on the night. Cecil was rocked in his last start against the Angels, but he's pitched pretty well the other three times since being recalled. He'll take a 5.64 ERA and 1.43 WHIP into this weekend's start against the White Sox.

Fri Jun 29 201200:58Cecil blasted in loss to Angels
Brett Cecil was blasted in a loss to the Angles on Thursday to the tune of eight runs on 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings of work.
He did manage to rack up six strikeouts while walking two, but he was clearly far too hittable on the evening. He surrendered three home runs in the game (Mark Trumbo, Alberto Callaspo and Mike Trout), accounting for five of the eight runs allowed. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, they don't have any other options to turn to, and Cecil's spot in the rotation will remain safe for the foreseeable future. He'll take the hill again on Tuesday where he'll battle the Royals at home.

Sat Jun 23 201216:19Cecil goes six-plus innings in no-decision
Brett Cecil held the Marlins to one run over six-plus innings on Saturday, but walked away with a no-decision.
Cecil scattered five hits while walking three and striking out a pair. He was pulled from the game after giving up a bunt single to Justin Ruggiano and a game-tying RBI double to Omar Infante to begin the seventh. The 27-year-old left-hander has allowed three runs in 11 innings (2.45 ERA) in two starts since his call-up from Triple-A Las Vegas and should continue to hold down a rotation spot for now. He's worth a look in AL-only leagues.

Sun Jun 17 201216:10Brett Cecil wins first start of 2012
Making his season debut, Brett Cecil held the Phillies to two runs on five hits in five innings of work Sunday, picking up the win in Toronto's 6-2 victory.
Cecil struck out five, walked one and surrendered a pair of solo home runs. Not a bad start to his season after he was surprisingly demoted to Triple-A to begin the season. Coming off a 2011 where he posted a 4.73 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 87/42 K/BB ratio across 123 2/3 innings, he should be worth a flier in AL-only leagues.

Fri Jun 15 201213:27Brett Cecil recalled
Blue Jays recalled LHP Brett Cecil from Triple-A Las Vegas.
He'll get the ball Sunday against the Phillies. Cecil surprisingly lost out on a rotation spot with a poor spring training and has spent most of the season at Double-A, just recently being bumped up to Las Vegas. He's pitched pretty well of late, though and holds a 3.47 ERA and 40/14 K/BB ratio over 49 1/3 innings between the two levels. It's possible he'll churn out some AL-only value.

Thu Apr 26 201217:20Brett Cecil sidelined with groin injury
Brett Cecil will miss his next three starts with Double-A New Hampshire due to a groin injury.
Cecil suffered the injury in a start last Thursday. He was erratic even before the injury, so rookie right-hander Drew Hutchison should get a chance to sink-or-swim in the major league rotation for the foreseeable future.

Fri Apr 20 201213:33Brett Cecil leaves Double-A start with injury
Brett Cecil left his start with Double-A New Hampshire Thursday due to an apparent upper leg injury.
Further details aren't available at this time, but at least the ailment doesn't appear to be arm related. We'll update Cecil's status when more is known. The left-hander was a surprise cut just before the season, as he had been expected to break camp as a member of Toronto's rotation.

Tue Apr 3 201210:10Blue Jays option LHP Cecil to Double-A
Blue Jays optioned LHP Brett Cecil to Double-A New Hampshire.
This is a minor surprise. Cecil entered spring training as a favorite for a rotation spot, but after pitching well in his first four outings, he gave up 11 runs on 15 hits and six walks over his final two spring starts. Joel Carreno and Kyle Drabek are now expected to follow Ricky Romero, Brandon Morrow and Henderson Alvarez in the starting rotation.
