Thu Jun 7 201219:52Santos (shoulder) gets through three bullpens
Sergio Santos (shoulder) has thrown three bullpen sessions at increasing effort levels.
The Blue Jays are currently mulling over whether he'll throw another bullpen session or progress to facing live hitters. There's no formal timetable for his return, but he's beginning to make significant progress.

Sat Jun 2 201211:31Santos (shoulder) throws controlled bullpen
Sergio Santos (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch "controlled bullpen" on Friday.
It's the first time he's thrown off a mound since being placed on the disabled list. Toronto's current plan calls for Santos to throw another bullpen on Monday before being cleared to face live hitters in two weeks. If all goes well, he could rejoin the Jays' bullpen in mid-to-late June.

Sun May 27 201213:54Sergio Santos still not long-tossing
Sergio Santos (shoulder) has yet to resume long-tossing.
Santos was doing some throwing earlier this month, but he's yet to progress as the Blue Jays hoped. At the moment, he's scheduled to resume long-tossing later this week, but it's possible that schedule could change. The Blue Jays closer isn't close to rejoining the team's bullpen.

Mon May 21 201218:12Santos (shoulder) throwing at 115-120 feet
Sergio Santos (shoulder) is currently throwing at a distance of 115-120 feet.
Santos hopes to be long-tossing by the end of the week, after which he'll likely begin throwing from a mound. It was previously estimated that he could be back by the end of the month, but now early-to-mid June looks more realistic. Casey Janssen will continue to handle save chances.

Wed May 9 201209:06Santos (shoulder) plays catch Tuesday
Sergio Santos (shoulder) played catch Tuesday for the first time since being placed on the disabled list last month.
Santos flew to Florida on Sunday after receiving clearance from Dr. Lewis Yocum to resume throwing. Blue Jays manager John Farrell indicated that the 28-year-old right-hander is likely two weeks away from a possible minor league rehab assignment, so it's fair to expect him back by the end of the month. Francisco Cordero should continue to fill in, though he has blown each of his last three save chances.

Thu May 3 201219:16Santos (shoulder) close to playing catch
Sergio Santos (shoulder) is expected to start playing catch this weekend.
Santos was placed on the disabled list nearly three weeks ago due to right shoulder inflammation. No structural damage was found, but doctors told him to not throw for two weeks. The Blue Jays will bring him along slowly, so he doesn't figure to return until late May. Francisco Cordero will continue to handle save chances for now.

Wed Apr 25 201208:52Santos (shoulder) out at least four weeks
Sergio Santos will be out for at least the next four weeks due to inflammation in his right shoulder.
Santos recently underwent an MRI which revealed no structural damage, but he was told to not throw for the next two weeks. He'll have to ramp things up slowly from there and likely make a couple minor league rehab appearances, so we likely won't see him back in the Jays' bullpen until late May. Francisco Cordero will hold things down in the closer role for now and should be owned in the great majority of fantasy leagues.

Tue Apr 24 201208:43Santos (shoulder) won't throw for 10-14 days
Sergio Santos (shoulder) is on a "no throw" program for 10-14 days after an MRI showed no structural damage.
Good news, as Santos appears to just be dealing with some inflammation in the shoulder. He'll be reevaluated after the 10-14 day period, at which time he could be cleared to resume throwing. Francisco Cordero should be owned in most fantasy leagues while he's sidelined.

Sun Apr 22 201213:28Sergio Santos to have shoulder checked out
Sergio Santos (shoulder) will fly to Los Angeles to be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum.
The Blue Jays think Santos is just dealing with inflammation, but he'll be checked out for structural damage just in case. Francisco Cordero will handle the ninth inning while Santos is on the shelf.

Sun Apr 22 201208:24Sergio Santos (shoulder) placed on DL
Blue Jays placed RHP Sergio Santos on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.
A tough break for the Jays and for Santos' fantasy owners. Santos felt some tightness in the shoulder while converting a save Friday. "He didn't feel quite right in that save situation last night," manager John Farrell said after Saturday's game. "And as the evening progressed, he felt more tightness throughout the night. He woke up [Saturday] morning with that inflammation kind of rearing its head." Farrell is considering the move precautionary, so it sounds like an extended stay on the DL might not be needed. Francisco Cordero will close games for Toronto while Santos is out.

Fri Apr 20 201223:56Santos records second save
Sergio Santos recorded his second save of the season in the Jays win over the Royals on Friday.
He's been extremely inconsistent in the early part of the season, and this outing won't help his job security. Santos allowed a pair of hits and a run before finally retiring Eric Hosmer to end the threat. Francisco Cordero hasn't been much better, but could be an option to finish games should Santos continue to struggle.

Sun Apr 15 201216:10Jays activate Santos from paternity leave
Blue Jays activated RHP Sergio Santos from the paternity leave list.
Santos took a few days off to witness the birth of his child. The young flamethrower will return to his ninth-inning gig, pushing Francisco Cordero back to setup duties.

Sat Apr 14 201213:20Santos to be activated from paternity list
Sergio Santos will be activated from the paternity leave list on Sunday.
Santos is scheduled to arrive Saturday before game time, but won't be activated until tomorrow. Evan Crawford will likely be demoted once Santos returns.

Fri Apr 13 201214:53Santos officially placed on paternity list
Blue Jays placed RHP Sergio Santos on the paternity list.
The move enables the Jays to call Evan Crawford up for a day while Santos is away for the birth of his child. Santos could be back as early as Saturday, but will return for sure by Sunday. Francisco Cordero will handle fireman duties in his absence.

Tue Apr 10 201216:23Santos excused from Jays Thursday-Saturday
Sergio Santos will not be with the Blue Jays from Thursday until Saturday due to the birth of his child.
It might serve as a nice break for both sides. Santos, who was acquired this offseason from the White Sox and expected to provide a steady presence in the ninth inning for Toronto, has blown two saves in two tries. He's currently sporting a 15.43 ERA. Francisco Cordero seems likely to close games in his absence.

Sat Apr 7 201217:08Sergio Santos blows save against Indians
Sergio Santos blew a 3-2 lead in the ninth on Saturday against the Indians by giving up a game-tying solo homer to Asdrubal Cabrera.
Just the latest in a long line of big name closers who have blown a save early on. Santos was acquired from the White Sox over the winter after posting a 3.55 ERA last season while going 30-for-36 in save opportunities. We still expect him to be a really solid fantasy closer, but Francisco Cordero lingers if he has a prolonged struggle.

Tue Dec 6 201112:48White Sox trade closer Sergio Santos to Jays
Blue Jays acquired RHP Sergio Santos from the White Sox for RHP Nestor Molina.
Santos will take over at closer for the Blue Jays in 2012 and should excel much in the way that he did in Chicago. The former infielder posted a stellar 3.55 ERA and 92/39 K/BB ratio over 63 1/3 innings this past year while converting 30 saves. He'll remain a rock-solid fantasy option on an improving Toronto team.

Mon Nov 28 201111:49MLB teams showing trade interest in Santos
Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune reports that the White Sox are "getting a lot of calls" on Sergio Santos.
Santos was signed to a team-friendly three-year, $8.25 million extension in September, so it's doubtful the White Sox will now want to move him. The former infielder posted a 3.55 ERA, a 92/29 K/BB ratio, and tallied 30 saves over 63 1/3 innings in 2011. He'll make just $1 million next season and $2.75 million in 2013.

Fri Sep 30 201116:03White Sox, Santos agree to three-year deal
White Sox signed RHP Sergio Santos to a three-year, $8.25 million contract extension.
The contract includes three guaranteed years (including his first two years of arbitration) and club options from 2015-2017. He'll make $1 million next season, $2.75 million in 2013 and $3.75 million in 2014. Meanwhile, the team options include $6 million for 2015, $8 million for 2016 an $8.75 million for 2017. Santos, a former infielder, thrived after unexpectedly being thrust into the closer role earlier this season, posting a 3.55 ERA, 30 saves and a 92/29 K/BB ratio over 63 1/3 innings. Assuming the 28-year-old right-hander remains healthy, this could be a great deal for the White Sox.

Tue Sep 27 201105:10Sergio Santos collects 30th save . . . barely
In what probably will be his last appearance of the season, Sergio Santos barely survived another ninth inning collapse, earning his 30th save while yielding a pair of runs on two hits and three walks.
He also struck out the side. But that's small consolation for a 44-pitch outing in which he nearly blew his seventh save opportunity. In August, manager Ozzie Guillen committed to Santos as the team's closer next spring. With new leadership on the way, it will be interesting to see if Santos -- owning a 9.72 ERA this month -- remains the frontrunner.
