Phil Coke (ankle) yielded three runs over 5 1/3 innings Friday in a minor league rehab start with Triple-A Toledo.
All three runs scored in the sixth inning. Coke allowed eight hits while fanning six and walking two. He threw 58 out of 89 pitches for strikes. Assuming his ankle bounces back OK, he should be activated from the disabled list for next Wednesday's game against the Rangers.

Wed Jun 1 201112:14Coke (ankle) set for rehab start Friday
Phil Coke (ankle) will make a minor league rehab start Friday with Triple-A Toledo.
If all goes well, he could return next Wednesday against the Rangers. Coke was 1-5 with a 3.81 ERA and 30/16 K/BB ratio over his first 52 innings before going down with a bone bruise in his right ankle last month.

Phil Coke (ankle) is in line to return from the 15-day disabled list on June 8 to face the Rangers.

Tue May 24 201121:41Phil Coke will return as starter
Tigers manager Jim Leyland put to rest any rumors that Phil Coke (ankle) would be moved to the bullpen after returning from the disabled list.
"There was never any talk about putting Coke back in the bullpen," Leyland said. "Somebody mentioned that to me. That's absolutely not true at this stage, nor has it been up to this stage. And it's still not at this stage." Andy Oliver, who will start in Coke's place Saturday, has a promising future, but Coke hasn't done anything to lose his spot, posting a 3.81 ERA and 1.23 WHIP through 52 innings this season. It could be a moved made down the line, but it's not being considered at the moment.

Tue May 24 201110:07Coke hits disabled list with bone bruise
Tigers placed LHP Phil Coke on the 15-day disabled list with a bone bruise in his left ankle.
Coke suffered the injury in the fourth inning of his Monday evening start against the Rays. It's nothing serious, but it makes sense to sit the left-hander for two outings to ensure that the bruising does not linger. Coke has a 3.81 ERA and 1.23 WHIP through 52 innings this season. Andy Oliver will start in his place Saturday.

Tue May 24 201109:03Coke has bone bruise, could miss start
Phil Coke suffered a bone bruise in his right ankle in Monday's start against the Rays.
"They tell me I've got an extra bone in my foot," Coke told reporters after the game. "There was a little separation and then they (bones) came back together real hard and bruised the space in between them." It seems likely that the left-hander will sit out for at least one start. He made it through just 3 1/3 innings Monday.

Wed May 18 201122:59Coke takes a tough-luck no-decision
Phil Coke allowed just three hits in seven scoreless innings on Wednesday evening, but got stuck with no-decision in Detroit's 1-0 loss in Boston.
He struck out four and walked one. A tough-luck night for the Tigers lefty, who had gone seven innings just one other time in his eight starts this season. Now the owner of a 3.88 ERA and 1.25 WHIP through 48 2/3 innings of work, he'll get the Rays at home next week.

Sun May 1 201116:25Coke quality in loss
Phil Coke was quality in Detroit's loss to the Indians on Sunday, allowing just four hits and two runs in six innings of work.
He struck out four and walked two. Today was a nice bounce-back outing for Coke, who had allowed a combined 13 runs in his past two outings. For the season, he now owns a 4.50 ERA and 1.30, and looks set to be a perfectly acceptable option in AL-only leagues.

Tue Apr 26 201121:58Coke struggles mightily in loss to Mariners
Phil Coke was blasted for seven earned runs over 4 1/3 innings Tuesday in a loss to the Mariners.
Coke was also detonated last Tuesday against the light-hitting Mariners, allowing six runs. He entered this start with a 2.75 ERA, but consider that his three starts prior to tonight's game came against Seattle, Oakland and Kansas City. The bloom is starting to come off the rose for the converted reliever, who falls to 1-4 with a 4.88 ERA. He'll have a chance to right himself Sunday against the Indians.

Wed Apr 20 201101:41Tigers' Coke takes loss to Seattle
Phil Coke gave up six runs -- two earned -- in 3 2/3 innings Tuesday in a loss to the Mariners.
The four unearned runs all came after his own error in the first inning. Coke allowed six hits, walked four and struck out none before being pulled. He pitched well in his previous two starts, so one bad outing won't put him in the doghouse. Even if it was against Seattle.

Fri Apr 15 201101:24Coke dominates Oakland hitters
Phil Coke earned his first win of the season on Thursday, tossing seven shutout innings against the Athletics.
He gave up only three hits and two walks in the contest. Tigers manager Jim Leyland's decision to convert Coke into a starter appears brilliant thus far.

Sat Apr 9 201119:01Coke turns in decent outing in first start
Phil Coke allowed just three hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings on Saturday afternoon, but got out-dueled by Bruce Chen in Detroit's loss to the Royals.
Yes, getting out-dueled by Bruce Chen is something that can actually happen. Coke struck out a healthy seven batters, but also issued four free passes, and was lucky to get tagged for only two runs. Still, all things considered, it was a promising first start for the 28-year-old lefty, and he's worth monitoring in all but the shallowest of fantasy leagues.

Thu Apr 7 201102:11Coke likely to remain starter
Tigers manager Jim Leyland indicated that, barring an emergency, Phil Coke will not return to the bullpen.
Coke has not been very sharp in either of his relief appearances this season, giving up three hits and two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. He will make his first start on Saturday against the Royals.

Thu Mar 31 201116:23Tigers' Coke takes loss in relief
Phil Coke was charged with a loss in relief after giving up a homer to Curtis Granderson in the seventh inning Thursday.
Coke also allowed a second run after Russell Martin reached on an error, but that was unearned. He could make another relief appearance this weekend before joining the rotation next week.

Mon Mar 21 201116:03Tigers' Coke defeats Astros
Phil Coke tossed five innings and allowed one run Monday in a defeat of the Astros.
Coke struggled against the Cardinals in his outing Wednesday, but he has a 2.49 ERA in 21 2/3 innings for the spring. He's still looking like a pretty solid choice as as a fourth or fifth starter in AL-only leagues.

Fri Mar 11 201116:38Tigers' Coke earns win over Cardinals
Phil Coke shut down the Cardinals for four innings to earn a victory Friday.
Coke allowed three hits, walked one and struck out three while lowering his spring ERA to 1.38. He'll give up his share of homers once the regular season starts, but he'll probably be a pretty nifty back-of-the-rotation guy for the Tigers.

Sat Feb 26 201116:00Tigers' Coke goes two scoreless
Phil Coke started and picked up the win for the Tigers on Saturday after throwing two scoreless innings against the Blue Jays.
The Tigers are committed to Coke, so even with a poor spring, he'd likely enter the season as their fourth starter. He's a worthy sleeper in AL-only leagues.
Fri Dec 10 201009:07Leyland optimistic about Coke now starting
Tigers manager Jim Leyland expressed optimism Thursday about Phil Coke's move from the bullpen to the starting rotation.
"I think as a starter, you'll see a little bit of a different personality than you saw as a reliever, probably," said Leyland. "But this guy has got really good stuff, and he's got three pitches - three good pitches." Coke posted a solid 3.57 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 51/25 K/BB ratio over 63 innings this past year for Detroit. He may be a sleeper in some deeper mixed fantasy leagues.
