Sun Oct 3 201011:02Phil Coke to serve as starter next season
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Saturday that Phil Coke will serve as a starter next season.
"That's my intention," Leyland said. Coke pitched out of the bullpen in his first season with Detroit, posting a 3.57 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 51/25 K/BB ratio over 63 innings. But the 28-year-old was used mostly as a starter in the Yankees' minor league system and has adequate stuff.

Mon Sep 20 201000:33Tigers' Coke blows four-run lead
Phil Coke retired just one of the six batters he faced and gave up four runs in the ninth inning Sunday against the White Sox.
Coke came into a 7-3 game and struggled mightily, though the blown save ended up going to Robbie Weinhardt after he took over with one out, the bases loaded and two runs already in. With Coke struggling of late, perhaps Ryan Perry should get save chances while Jose Valverde is absent. He pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings tonight. Daniel Schlereth ended up with the save for Detroit after pitching a scoreless 11th.
Mon Aug 30 201014:45Coke may be moved to rotation eventually
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Sunday that Phil Coke may be moved to the starting rotation in the future.
The Tigers acquired Coke in last offseason's Curtis Granderson deal and decided to use him in the bullpen this season. But that could change by spring training 2011. "He's really good," Leyland said. "I think he has the pitches to start, without question, but would they hold up starting? I don't know." Coke, 28, has a 2.50 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 54 innings this season.

Wed Jul 7 201021:49Coke gets save with Valverde unavailable
Phil Coke picked up his first save as a Tiger in Wednesday's win over Baltimore.
The southpaw allowed an inherited runner to score on a sac fly but then got a pop-up and a strikeout to close out the win. Manager Jim Leyland turned to Coke because there were two switch-hitters and a left-handed hitter due up. Still, Coke has been the team's best reliever this season other than Valverde, so it's possible he could get other chances when the closer isn't available if Ryan Perry doesn't improve.
