Thu Dec 8 201122:19Oviedo won't face charges for identity fraud
Juan Carlos Oviedo will not face charges in the Dominican Republic related to his identity fraud case.
Oviedo, formerly known as Leo Nunez, was arrested on Thursday in the Dominican while trying to secure a visa under his real name. But the warrant was later revealed to be out of date and he was released quickly without bail. The Dominican authorities will not press charges against the 29-year-old right-hander because he is fully cooperating with the investigation into his own crime.

Thu Dec 8 201114:09Marlins' Oviedo arrested for faking identity
Juan Carlos Oviedo was arrested on Thursday in his native Dominican Republic and will be brought to trial on charges of using a false identity.
We originally heard that Oviedo (formerly known as Leo Nunez) would not face any charges after admitting to using a fake identity, but that's apparently not the case. The Marlins placed him on the restricted list in September, but it's not clear how that will affect his non-tender status. Regardless, it doesn't sound like he will be returning to the United States in the near future. Stay tuned.

The Marlins plan to non-tender Juan Carlos Oviedo.
Formerly known as Leo Nunez, Oviedo is still trying to re-enter the United States after turning himself into authorities this fall for a long-running identity scheme. It's not known whether he'll be back by spring training. Oviedo posted a 4.06 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 64 1/3 innings in 2011 while saving 36 games in 42 opportunities. The Padres signed Heath Bell to a three-year, $27 million free agent contract on Thursday.

Sat Nov 19 201112:18Marlins moving forward without Oviedo
Marlins assistant general manager Dan Jennings said the Marlins are going forward with plans as if Juan Carlos Oviedo is not coming back.
Oviedo saved 92 games for the Marlins over the past three seasons and would be under team control entering his final year of arbitration. The 29-year-old, formerly known as Leo Nunez, is currently working through legal issues after admitting in September to faking his identity, and is at risk of being non-tendered. The Marlins have until December 12 to decide whether to offer him a contract.

Tue Nov 1 201119:39Marlins confident Oviedo will return to U.S.
Marlins president Larry Beinfest indicated Tuesday that he is optimistic Juan Carlos Oviedo's legal issues will be resolved in time for him to pitch in the majors next season.
Oviedo, formerly known as Leo Nunez, is currently working through legal issues in his native Dominican Republic after he admitted in September to faking his identity. "We're all hopeful he's going to be back here as Juan Carlos Oviedo and back in the country and issued a visa, then we can work on the business side of it," said Beinfest. The Marlins' closer is arbitration-eligible for the final time this winter and is at risk of being non-tendered regardless of his legal difficulties.

Tue Sep 27 201108:41Oviedo won't face charges for identity fraud
Leo Nunez will not face criminal charges in the Dominican Republic for falsifying his identity.
Nunez, whose real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo, revealed the case of fraud last week at the final request of his dying father. Because he came forward with the information and because he has cooperated with the investigation, the Dominican authorities have decided to take it easy on him. Whether the United States or Major League Baseball will try to prevent him from continuing his baseball career is a different story. But he's crossed one major hurdle.

Fri Sep 23 201118:02Report: Leo Nunez admits faking identity
According to Dionisio Soldevila of the Associated Press, a government official in the Dominican Republic said Leo Nunez has admitted to using fake documents and a fake ID to sign a professional contract.
As we learned on Thursday, Nunez's real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo and he's actually a year older than his listed age of 28. Central Electoral Commission President Roberto Rosario said at a press conference Friday that Nunez signed a sworn statement admitting that he is not the person identified in official documents. Dominican authorities have arrested Hector Pena Diaz, who is accused of falsifying his documents. The Marlins placed the right-hander on the restricted list Thursday and he is not expected to return to the major leagues this season.

Thu Sep 22 201116:03Marlins place closer Nunez on restricted list
Marlins placed RHP Leo Nunez on the restricted list.
The Marlins still aren't offering an exact reason for Nunez's suspension, only saying that it's not a discipline issue. He has left for the Dominican Republic and presumably won't return to the major leagues before the end of the regular season. Steve Cishek and Edward Mujica could pick up some saves between now and September 28.

Thu Sep 22 201114:15Nunez placed on restricted list by Marlins
According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, Leo Nunez has been placed on Major League Baseball's restricted list and suspended by the Marlins for undisclosed reasons.
The reason for the suspension isn't yet clear. "I can't yet comment," said Nunez's agent Andy Mota. "This is very recent. I don't want to say anything at all." Nunez has left for the Dominican Republic, so he is presumably done for the season. Steve Cishek is likely the pitcher to own in this situation in fantasy leagues, though Edward Mujica could also get a look. Nunez, who is under team control through 2012, could make around $6.5 million in arbitration this winter.

Wed Aug 24 201114:04Nunez unavailable Wednesday vs. Reds
Leo Nunez is unavailable for Wednesday's doubleheader against the Reds.
Marlins manager Jack McKeon still has confidence in Nunez, despite his recent struggles, but he'll take a seat after throwing 37 pitches in a blown save Tuesday night. Edward Mujica or Steve Cishek are possible options in a save situation.

Tue Aug 23 201123:24Leo Nunez melts down vs. Reds
Leo Nunez had a ninth-inning meltdown Tuesday against the Reds, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks over 2/3 innings while registering his sixth blown save.
Nunez retired the first batter but then let the next four reach before Yonder Alonso eventually put the nail in the coffin with a two-out, two-run double. He's now allowed nine runs over his last three appearances and his ERA is all the way up to an un-closer-like 4.63. It's possible the Marlins might make a move in the ninth inning.

Wed Aug 17 201103:41Nunez barely avoids 2nd meltdown in 24 hours
Leo Nunez nearly blew his second save chance in as many nights, surrendering two runs on three hits Tuesday and escaping with his 33rd save.
Leading 6-3 to start the ninth, Nunez retired two of the first three batters before Jason Giambi took him deep to close the gap to one run. After Ty Wigginton made things even more interesting with a single, Dexter Fowler ended the game by popping out. Nunez has converted 28 of 33 save chances on the season, which actually is a slightly better clip than his 89-for-113 career mark. Whether or not his pitching hand remains sore from Monday night's hard grounder, Nunez's closer status hardly can be viewed as safe.

Tue Aug 16 201100:29Leo Nunez takes grounder off hand, loses game
Closer Leo Nunez took the loss for the Marlins on Monday, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk in Florida's 7-4 setback in Colorado.
After striking out Ty Wigginton to end the eighth, Nunez retired Mark Ellis to begin the ninth before taking an Eric Young grounder off of his pitching hand. He was able to throw Young out and stay in the game, but allowed back-to-back doubles to Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez before being ordered to intentionally walk Troy Tulowitzki. He was then relieved by Randy Choate, who served up a game-winning, three-run bomb to Jason Giambi. Although Nunez was able to continue pitching tonight, it wouldn't be surprising if his hand swells up and he is unavailable for the next few days. His status will be updated on Tuesday.

Fri Aug 12 201122:10Leo Nunez nails down another one
Leo Nunez extended his career high in saves by nailing down his 32nd in Friday's win over the Giants.
Nunez has now been unscored upon in eight of his last nine appearances and has an 89 percent save conversion rate this season despite a rather pedestrian 3.35 ERA. We're still wondering why the Marlins didn't deal him at the deadline.

Mon Aug 1 201112:48Leo Nunez earns save No. 30
Leo Nunez notched his 30th save of the year Sunday in the Marlins' 3-1 defeat of the Braves.
Nunez drew a ton of interest at the trade deadline, but he's under team control through 2012 and the Marlins want him at closer when they open their new park next season. The 27-year-old right-hander has posted a 3.33 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 46/15 K/BB raito in 52 appearances this year.

Sat Jul 30 201112:43Report: Marlins unlikely to deal
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Marlins are "getting a ton of hits" on Leo Nunez, Omar Infante, Ricky Nolasco and Randy Choate but are inclined to hang on to all of them due to the weakness of the offers.
The sense all along is that the Marlins were unlikely to make their potential trade pieces available because they want to have a ready-to-contend club when they move into their new stadium next season. We could see him changing their mind and dealing a lesser guy like Choate, but for now it appears they'll stand pat.

Fri Jul 29 201120:42Report: Marlins plan to keep Leo Nunez
According to Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Marlins plan to keep Leo Nunez into next season.
We already knew that the Marlins were unlikely to trade Nunez before Sunday's deadline, but there was some doubt about whether they would keep him for 2012, as he could make around $6.5 million in arbitration this winter. A source tells Rodriguez that the Marlins don't feel they have someone ready to take over the closer role.

Tue Jul 26 201112:49Marlins 'unlikely' to trade closer Leo Nunez
According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Marlins are now "unlikely" to trade Leo Nunez.
The Fish have been fielding plenty of phone calls on Nunez, who has a 3.47 ERA and 28 saves this season, but they apparently haven't been swayed by any offers. The Marlins' ownership may want all hands on deck for the opening of the club's new ballpark in 2012.
