Sat Jul 23 201114:27Report: Teams interested in Marlins relievers
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Marlins are "getting lots of hits" on Leo Nunez and Randy Choate, as well as other members of their bullpen.
Olney adds, though, that the "impending move to (their) new ballpark have (the Marlins) in (a) holding pattern." It's no secret that the Fish would like to keep their core intact as they try to compete in 2012, but Nunez and Choate should both be available for the right price.

Tue Jul 19 201112:39Phillies have talked to Fish about Leo Nunez
ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that the Phillies have "talked to the Marlins" about closer Leo Nunez.
The Marlins are looking for young starting pitching this deadline, and the Phillies have a ton of it. Nunez, 27, is sporting a 3.30 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 43 2/3 innings this season and has converted 27-of-30 save opportunities. He'd fit nicely at the back-end of the Philadelphia bullpen.

Thu Jul 14 201109:20Marlins looking to trade Leo Nunez?
Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel writes that there's a "good chance" Leo Nunez is dealt before the trade deadline.
Nunez will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter and Rodriguez finds it doubtful that the Marlins will want to pay him. Mike Dunn, who was acquired from the Braves in the Dan Uggla deal, might be the best internal option to take the reins in the event of a trade, since Clay Hensley is being moved into the starting rotation.

Tue Jul 12 201113:54Nunez has converted six straight save chances
Since blowing three out of four save chances at the end of May and the beginning of June, Leo Nunez has converted six straight.
Nunez has been far from dominant this year, but he's converted 25-of-28 saves despite a shaky 3.51 ERA. Since June 1, he has a 4.50 ERA with an 11/6 K/BB rate in 14 innings. The Marlins' closer still has nothing to worry about as far as job security.

Thu Jun 30 201118:47Leo Nunez records 22nd save
Leo Nunez recorded his 22nd save despite giving up a two-run homer in the ninth inning Thursday against the A's.
A dominant closer he isn't, but Nunez is 22-for-25 saving games this year. The runs today were the first he had allowed in six appearances, so he still has nothing to worry about as far as job security.

Tue Jun 21 201122:37Nunez finally records first save of June
Leo Nunez recorded one out -- via strikeout -- to earn his 20th save in a 5-2 win against the Angels on Tuesday.
It was remarkably his first save of June after he recorded 19 in April and May. Such is life as a closer on a struggling team. Florida entered the ninth with a 5-0 lead but called on Nunez when Jose Ceda allowed two runs while recording two outs. Nunez walked a batter before ending the game with a punch out. He now has a 3.66 ERA and 1.25 WHIP on the year.

Thu Jun 16 201104:52Nunez blows second straight save opportunity
In his first save opportunity in nearly two weeks, Leo Nunez blew a two-run lead by surrendering two earned runs on three hits Wednesday night.
The Marlins ended up losing the game in 10 innings -- a devastating defeat that leaves the team 1-14 in June. Nunez has never been a dominant closer (15 blown saves in 2009 and 2010 combined), but his 18 consecutive converted saves to start the season certainly put him in elite company. That being said, his save conversion rate is 1-for-4 since May 25th, while Randy Choate and Steve Cishek have been lights out. Nunez needs to right the ship soon before Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez gets other ideas.

Sun Jun 12 201110:38Leo Nunez could return Tuesday
Leo Nunez (back) could throw a bullpen session either Sunday or Monday before possibly being available for Tuesday's game against the Phillies.
Nunez tweaked his back while warming up before Wednesday's game and hasn't been able to pitch since. Steve Cishek looks like the best bet to pitch the ninth inning Sunday if a save opportunity comes up, though Randy Choate or Mike Dunn could get a shot, too, depending on the matchup.

Sat Jun 11 201115:49Leo Nunez still a few days away
Leo Nunez (back) played catch Saturday but is still a few days away from being available.
The Marlins will use a committee in the ninth inning until Nunez is ready. Steve Cishek recorded the save on Friday, but Randy Choate or possibly Mike Dunn could also get a shot, depending on the matchups.

Fri Jun 10 201120:24Leo Nunez already feeling better
Leo Nunez (back) was reportedly feeling "much better" on Friday than he was on Thursday.
The Marlins closer is hoping to be back by Sunday, but early next week still remains most likely. He does not appear headed for the disabled list. The Marlins are expected to use a ninth-inning committee in his absence this weekend, with Steve Cishek and Randy Choate being most likely to get a save opportunity.

Fri Jun 3 201122:55Leo Nunez blows second save
Leo Nunez served up a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth Friday to blow his second save of the season.
Nunez has failed to convert just two of his 21 chances this season, but both blow saves have come in the last week. He has a 29/9 K/BB ratio over 28 innings this season but hasn't exactly been dominant, sporting a 3.54 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. Still, his job is quite safe despite his recent struggles.

Thu May 26 201102:43Leo Nunez blows first save for Marlins
Leo Nunez blew his first save of the year after giving up two runs in the ninth Wednesday against the Giants.
Nunez was 18-for-18 saving games this season, so he certainly has nothing to worry about as far as job security. He's not dominant, but it looks like he'll have a chance at 40 saves this year anyway.

Tue May 24 201114:45Nunez hasn't blown a save opportunity yet
Leo Nunez hasn't blown a save opportunity this season.
Nunez has a major-league leading 17 saves to go along with a 2.66 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and a 24/9 K/BB rate in 23 2/3 innings. Those aren't dominant numbers, but certainly good enough to make him one of fantasy's best closers thus far. The Marlins considered non-tendering Nunez over the winter after a poor 2010 in which he lost his closer's job to Clay Hensley. Florida has to be ecstatic with their decision to keep him now.

Tue May 17 201100:24Nunez records 15th save in wild win
Leo Nunez pitched a scoreless 11th inning against the Mets on Monday evening, picking up his major-league leading 15th save in a 2-1 Marlins victory.
He struck out two while allowing one hit. Through his first 22 outings and 21 2/3 innings, Nunez now owns a 2.91 ERA and 1.25 WHIP to go along with a 20/9 K/BB ratio. Not quite lock-down numbers, but certainly good enough to provide him with a decent amount of rope in the ninth inning.

Mon May 16 201112:15Nunez 14-for-14 in save chances thus far
Leo Nunez has successfully converted all 14 of his save opportunities this season.
Nunez leads the league in the category. He wasn't the most attractive fantasy option in drafts this spring, but the right-hander is getting the job done to the tune of a 3.05 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 19/9 K/BB ratio.

Sun May 1 201120:51Nunez racks up his ninth save
Leo Nunez recorded his ninth save in Sunday's win over the Reds.
Nnuez was called upon to get the final two outs with men on base and the Marlins nursing a 9-5 lead. He's yet to blow a save this season and is sporting a 2.63 ERA to go with a 15:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Nunez is as safe as they come at closer right now.

Mon Apr 25 201110:56Nunez successful on six straight save chances
Leo Nunez has successfully converted all six of his save opportunities this season.
Nunez isn't typically regarded as a consistent or reliable ninth inning fantasy option, but he's been nearly flawless thus far. He currently boasts a 1.80 ERA.

Thu Mar 10 201116:10Nunez leaves team after death of father
Leo Nunez has left Marlins' camp following the death of his father.
The Marlins will naturally give him as much time as he needs. Nunez has made three Grapefruit League appearances and has allowed only one run.
