Sun Apr 8 201218:09Qualls is currently sidelined by a right heel
Chad Qualls is currently sidelined by a right heel injury.
Qualls said it feels like a "knife was going at the back of my heel" when he was walking around. There is no swelling in his foot, but the bone is causing him pain. Consider him day-to-day by now.

Sun Feb 19 201210:53Chad Qualls won't arrive until Tuesday
Chad Qualls won't arrive in Phillies' spring training camp until Tuesday due to personal issues.
It's no big deal that he'll be a couple days behind. Qualls didn't pitch well away from Petco Park last season, but he's had a good amount of success in his career and has a shot to be a solid middle relief option in Philly. The 33-year-old inked a one-year, $1.15 million contract late last month.

Tue Jan 31 201211:06Phillies sign Chad Qualls to one-year deal
Phillies signed RHP Chad Qualls to a one-year, $1.15 million contract.
Qualls had some scary splits away from Petco Park last year (5.05 ERA in 35 2/3 innings) and posted a 7.32 ERA across 59 innings with the Diamondbacks and Rays in 2010. The Phillies will hope for better out of the 6-foot-5 33-year-old right-hander, but they're unlikely to get it.

Sun Jan 15 201209:05Red Sox interested in Chad Qualls
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that Chad Qualls "has been on Boston's radar all offseason."
Qualls was also linked to the Mets earlier this offseason, but they're probably no longer an option after having already added three relievers. Qualls saw his K/9 rate bottom out at 5.2 last season, and he wasn't very good away from PETCO Park (5.05 ERA). But, with a career 3.78 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, he should have no trouble finding a new home.

Mon Dec 5 201117:31Mets interested in Chad Qualls
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Mets are interested in free agent reliever Chad Qualls.
Jon Heyman of SI.com reported previously that there were two "mystery teams" interested in Qualls, so perhaps the Mets are one of those teams. The 33-year-old right-hander posted a 3.51 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 43/20 K/BB ratio over 74 1/3 innings this past season. The drop in strikeout rate is concerning, and Qualls was much better in Petco Park than on the road, but he wouldn't be a bad addition on a reasonable deal.

Fri Dec 2 201122:40Two mystery teams interested in Chad Qualls
Jon Heyman of SI.com hears that there are two "mystery teams" interested in free agent Chad Qualls.
It's hard to tell whether Heyman is joking, but we'd imagine Qualls is drawing interest from multiple clubs. The 33-year-old right-hander posted a 3.51 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 43/20 K/BB ratio over 74 1/3 innings this season, though he enjoyed most of his success within the comfy confines of PETCO Park. The Padres declined his $6 million option for 2012 in October.

Sun Oct 30 201115:24Chad Qualls' option declined
Padres declined RHP Chad Qualls' $6 million option for 2012.
An expected move. Qualls had a pretty good year for the Pads, holding a 3.51 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 74 1/3 innings, though he also missed the fewest bats of his career, posting a 5.2 K/9 rate. He'll be able to catch on as a setup man somewhere.

Thu Oct 13 201120:29Chad Qualls' option will be declined
Padres GM Jed Hoyer revealed on The Darren Smith Show that the team will decline Chad Qualls' $6 million option for 2012.
Qualls had a solid year for the Pads, holding a 3.51 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 74 1/3 innings, though he also held a career-low 5.2 K/9 rate. The fact that the expensive option will be declined is no surprise, but he'll have no trouble getting another job somewhere.

Thu Sep 1 201100:01Qualls not traded at Wednesday's deadline
Chad Qualls was not traded at Wednesday's deadline.
The Padres drew some interest from a couple of teams this week, but weren't able to work out a waiver trade. Qualls will finish out the 2011 season in a Padres uniform.

Sat Jul 23 201120:05Qualls gives up three homers in loss
Chad Qualls took the loss Saturday against the Phillies by giving up five runs on four hits (including three homers) while retiring just one batter.
And it doesn't get much worse than that. Amazingly, Qualls entered Saturday's action having allowed just one home run over his first 48 1/3 innings this season. His ERA jumped from 2.61 to 3.51 in the loss. Let's just say this outing didn't do anything to help his trade value.

Thu May 12 201115:49Chad Qualls unscored upon last 8 times out
Chad Qualls hasn't given up a run in his last eight appearances.
Qualls has posted a 2.18 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in what has been a predictably fine bounce-back season with the Padres. He's struck out just 12 over 20 2/3 innings, but we would expect that 5.2 K/9 rate to creep up close to his 7.3 career rate by the end of the season.

Wed Jan 19 201118:11Padres finalize one-year deal with Qualls
Padres signed RHP Chad Qualls to a one-year, $1.5 million contract with a club option for 2012.
Qualls registered a poor 7.32 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over 59 innings last season between stays with the Diamondbacks and Rays, but he's a candidate to bounce back this year in a far more spacious ballpark. The club option for 2012 comes with a $1.05 million buyout, so he is guaranteed $2.55 million. He will probably be fourth in line for saves out in San Diego.
Thu Jan 13 201116:04Qualls' deal with Padres worth $2 million
Chad Qualls' new contract with the Padres will be worth around $2 million, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com.
That may seem like a large chunk of change for a guy who posted a terrible 7.32 ERA and 1.80 WHIP last season, but he was the victim of bad luck and he should be able to right the ship in the pitcher-friendly confines of Petco Park. The deal also includes a club option for 2012, though the value of that has not yet been revealed. All in all, it's not a terrible contract.

Tue Jan 11 201112:50Chad Qualls now open to one-year offers
Chad Qualls is now willing to consider one-year contract offers, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney.
That bit of news should mean that more suitors begin to step forward. The 32-year-old righty turned in a hideous 7.32 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over 59 innings last season for the Diamondbacks and Rays, but it wasn't long ago that he was a highly respected setup man. Relievers are so up and down, and our guess is that he might bounce back in the right situation.

Wed Dec 29 201019:35Qualls drawing interest from six clubs
Chad Qualls is drawing interest from six clubs.
The A's have been aggressive, as have the Mets. The other interested teams, however, are unknown. Qualls, 32, posted an ugly 7.32 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over 59 innings this past year for the Diamondbacks and Rays, but he seems likely to bounce back in a low-pressure middle relief role.

Wed Dec 29 201014:28Athletics targeting Qualls, Okajima
Sources tell Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com that the Athletics are targeting Chad Qualls and Hideki Okajima among free agent relievers.
The A's have pulled out of talks for Adrian Beltre, but they are prepared to allocate some of those funds to improve the ballclub in other areas. Both Qualls and Okajima are coming off down seasons, but they would be nice buy-low options for any number of teams. The team may also pursue another infielder, possibly as a backup to Kevin Kouzmanoff at third base.

Tue Dec 7 201018:39Report: Mets showing interest in Qualls
The Mets are showing interest in free agent pitcher Chad Qualls.
Qualls declined the Rays' offer of arbitration last month and will net Tampa Bay a supplemental round pick if he signs elsewhere. He registered an ugly 7.32 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over 59 innings this past year but would seem to be a nice rebound candidate.

Tue Nov 30 201019:32Qualls declines Rays' offer of arbitration
Chad Qualls declined the Rays' offer of arbitration.
Qualls would have made a little under $1 million had he accepted and gone through the arbitration process. He will seek more on the open market and will net the Rays a supplemental round pick if he signs elsewhere.

Tue Nov 23 201020:29Rays offer arbitration to Chad Qualls
The Rays have offered salary arbitration to Chad Qualls.
Qualls might actually accept. He registered an ugly 7.32 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over 59 innings this year and would struggle to find a guaranteed major league contract on the open market. If the right-hander stays with the Rays, he could earn a little under $1 million for the 2011 season.

Fri Aug 20 201011:55Qualls is unavailable for Friday's game
Chad Qualls will miss Friday's game due to the death in the family.
Qualls also missed Thursday's game, but the Rays are reluctant to place him on the bereavement list because he would be required to miss three games. He is expected to return Saturday.
