Sat Sep 24 201116:10Brian Matusz to start Sunday
Brian Matusz will start Sunday's game against the Tigers.
Matusz will most likely be making his final appearance of an extremely disappointing 2011 campaign. The once promising 24-year old took a gigantic step backwards posting a 10.68 ERA and 2.13 WHIP over 44 2/3 innings after an impressive rookie season. All eyes will be focused on the young left-hander next season.

Mon Sep 19 201123:53Matusz shelled again, ERA up to 10.68
Brian Matusz allowed six runs on six hits and two walks in just 1 2/3 innings on Monday, falling to 1-8 as Baltimore dropped the second game of a doubleheader 18-9 in Boston.
Something is not right with the 24-year-old lefty. Either he's pitching hurt, or has suffered one of the more dramatic erosions of skill you'll ever see. Now the owner of a staggeringly bad 10.68 ERA, Matusz has allowed 95 baserunners in 44 2/3 innings. That translates to an unfathomable 2.13 WHIP. Perhaps not since Chien-Ming Wang came unraveled for the Yankees in 2009 have we witnessed this poor of a performance from someone with legitimate expectations. Needless to say, Matusz will be entering the most important spring training of his career next February.

Sat Sep 17 201116:42Matusz to start Monday in Boston
Brian Matusz will start the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Red Sox.
Matusz was removed from the Orioles' starting rotation after his September 5 start against the Yankees, in which allowed five runs in only 1 1/3 innings. But the O's are desperate for an arm and will turn back to the young left-hander one more time.

Wed Sep 14 201120:59Brian Matusz could pitch again this year
Orioles manager Buck Showalter hasn't ruled out Brian Matusz making another appearance this season.
Matusz hasn't appeared in a game since being booted from the rotation early this month due to his struggles. He's been getting work in on the side and Showalter wouldn't rule out him making a start next week, though it seems likely an appearance would come in long relief if he makes one at all. "I'm proud of the way he's approached it, and I'm looking forward to him getting some return for it at some point," Showalter said.

Sat Sep 10 201113:21Brian Matusz's next outing unclear
There is no timetable for when Brian Matusz will make his next appearance.
It's also not clear whether that appearance will come in the rotation or out of the bullpen. For what it's worth, Matusz, who was booted from the rotation earlier this week, threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Saturday and came away feeling good.

Tue Sep 6 201118:17Matusz removed from Orioles' rotation
Brian Matusz has been removed from the starting rotation.
Matusz gave up five runs over just 1 1/3 innings Monday against the Yankees and now has a 9.84 ERA over 10 starts in the majors this season. The Orioles haven't ruled out giving him another start before the end of the season, but the young left-hander will try to work through his struggles out of the bullpen for now.

Sat Sep 3 201116:19Matusz to pitch Monday against Yanks
Brian Matusz will start Monday against the Yankees.
Matusz was scheduled to start on Saturday but was pushed back in the rotation due to his struggles in his three starts since coming off the disabled list on August 17. Tommy Hunter is going to start Tuesday's game against the Yanks in Baltimore.

Fri Sep 2 201118:27Matusz throws bullpen session Friday
Brian Matusz threw a bullpen session Friday.
Matusz was originally scheduled to start Saturday, but he is being skipped in the starting rotation. Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Friday that it's possible he could pitch against the Yankees next week. The young left-hander has allowed six earned runs in each of his three starts since returning from the disabled list, so he should be avoided in fantasy leagues.

Thu Sep 1 201116:15Matusz skipped in O's rotation
Brian Matusz will be skipped in the O's rotation.
Matusz has allowed six earned runs in each of his three starts since returning from the minor leagues in mid-August. It may be time for the young left-hander to begin focusing on getting back on track for 2012.

Fri Aug 26 201121:09O's, Yankees cancel Saturday's doubleheader
The Orioles have cancelled Saturday's doubleheader against the Yankees due to Hurricane Irene.
The two teams will play a split-doubleheader on Sunday and then a night game on Monday. They'll also meet again on September 8 to finish out the series. Hurricane Irene continues to wreak havoc on the MLB schedule.

Sun Aug 21 201119:36Matusz rocked by the Angels
Brian Matusz was ripped for six runs -- five earned -- over four innings in Sunday's loss to the Angels.
Matusz's nightmare season continues. He has given up at least five earned runs in his last four starts and is sporting a 8.92 ERA on the season. There are no signs that the former No. 4 overall pick is going to get on track anytime soon.

Fri Aug 19 201119:06Brian Matusz to start Sunday
Brian Matusz will start Sunday against the Angels in place of the injured Jeremy Guthrie (shoulder).
It will be his normal day to pitch, so no big deal. Matusz, though, was blasted for six runs in his return to the Orioles rotation on Tuesday and simply cannot be trusted in fantasy leagues right now.

Wed Aug 17 201101:06Matusz smoked for six runs on eight hits
In his return to the rotation, Brian Matusz was smoked for six runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings Tuesday in a loss to the A's.
The Orioles recalled Matusz from Triple-A Norfolk earlier in the day, hoping he'd learned something from his month-and-a-half demotion. Not so, apparently, as he was eaten alive against a weak offense in a pitcher's heaven. Amusingly, Matusz' ERA actually dropped in this game, as he was sent packing after posting an ugly 8.77 ERA over six starts earlier this year. His ERA now stands at 8.63 as we wait to see if Baltimore will give him another shot.

Tue Aug 16 201118:19Orioles recall Matusz for Tuesday start
Orioles recalled LHP Brian Matusz from Triple-A Norfolk.
As expected, Matusz will return from the minors to start Tuesday night against the Athletics. The young left-hander was demoted at the end of June after posting an ugly 8.77 ERA over six starts, but has given up just four runs over last 23 innings at the Triple-A level. The Orioles are hoping he can finish the season strong.

Fri Aug 12 201112:28Matusz the favorite to replace Tillman
Updating an earlier item, Brian Matusz is now expected to take the recently demoted Chris Tillman's place in the Orioles rotation.
It's doubtful Matusz has accomplished everything he needs to in the minors, but there's no doubt the results have been better of late, while his fastball has reportedly been regaining some of its lost miles per hour. If he's recalled on Tuesday as expected, Matusz will get the A's in Oakland. He'll be worth a long look in all formats despite his struggles earlier this season.

Fri Aug 12 201109:25Matusz pitching well at Triple-A
Brian Matusz has allowed just four earned runs over his past 23 innings of work for Triple-A Norfolk.
He threw a shutout against Lehigh Valley on Thursday. With Chris Tillman demoted following another rough outing on Thursday, there's a decent chance Matusz will be recalled to take his place in the rotation. The situation is worth keeping an eye on in AL-only leagues.

Thu Aug 11 201115:29Matusz throws complete game SO in minors
Brian Matusz threw a complete game shutout Thursday for Triple-A Norfolk.
Very impressive. Matusz scattered five hits while striking out eight, walking one and hitting two batters. He threw 74 out of 105 pitches for strikes. The young left-hander sat in the 88-89 mph on his fastball and topped out at 91 mph. He has allowed just four earned runs over his last three starts and is clearly knocking on the door for a return to the majors.

Fri Jul 22 201117:17Matusz tops out at 90 mph during minors start
Brian Matusz averaged between 87-88 mph and topped out at 90 mph with his fastball in Thursday's start with Triple-A Norfolk.
He was rocked for eight runs (seven earned) over 3 2/3 innings during the outing. Though Orioles manager Buck Showalter called the start a small setback, he said that he reports from Tides' pitching coach Mike Griffin were better that his line indicated. For what it's worth, his velocity was basically the same in his last start, when he struck out eight over seven shutout innings. Either way, he'll need to get better results before rejoining the O's.

Thu Jul 21 201115:51Matusz knocked around in rehab sart
Brian Matusz was smoked for eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings Thursday in his latest start with Triple-A Norfolk.
Uh oh. Matusz walked three and struck out two while throwing 53 out of 85 pitches for strikes. We haven't heard any reports about his velocity yet, but this is a huge step back after he tossed seven shutout innings in his last start. The young left-hander obviously still has some work to do before returning to the majors.

Sun Jul 17 201110:51Brian Matusz's velocity picks up
Brian Matusz averaged 88 mph and touched 90 mph with his fastball velocity in his start for Triple-A Norfolk Saturday.
Still not ideal, but it's a step up from the 86 mph he was averaging with the Orioles. The results were also there for the left-hander, as he spun seven shutout innings while striking out eight and allowing just three hits and two walks. He'll need a few more similar outings before rejoining the O's, but it's a step in the right direction.
