Fri Aug 28 202022:57MLB celebrates Jackie Robinson, calls for justice continue
PHOENIX (AP) — Andrew McCutchen has relished these past few days in the Philadelphia Phillies clubhouse, having difficult, important conversations with baseball teammates about racial injustice. As a Black man in a sport that's filled with mostly white and Hispanic players, he doesn't feel it's a burden to lead in the discussions. He's just glad that on Jackie Robinson Day, they're conversations that everyone is willing to have, even if the answers aren't always clear.“People want to know what’s next, want to know the answers,” McCutchen said. “It’s OK to not have the answers, it’s OK to not know what’s next. "What’s not OK is not caring what’s next.”Major League Baseball observed a Jackie Robinson Day like no other Friday, with teams celebrating a man who broke the sport's color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. More than 70 years later, the racial reckoning continued.Eleven games were postponed this week as some teams joined other leagues like the NBA, WNBA and MLS in protesting... [More]

PHOENIX (AP) — Major League Baseball observed a Jackie Robinson Day like no other Friday, with teams celebrating a man who broke the sport's color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 while the racial reckoning continued. Ten baseball games were postponed over two days as some teams joined other leagues like the NBA, WNBA and MLS in protesting social injustice. For Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, it's a well-timed honor.“I did find it almost crazy and kind of great, after everything that went down yesterday in baseball and in sports and with our organization as well, that we come right back here today and wear No. 42 and we go out there and celebrate Jackie Robinson and everything that he’s done for our game, and really, for the nation," Baldelli said.Jackie Robinson Day is usually on April 15, but the celebration was moved to Aug. 28 this season to accommodate the COVID-19-altered schedule, which started in late July. The date was chosen because it is the anniversary of the March on... [More]

Thu Aug 27 202020:17Awkward activism: MLB's uneven response to racial injustice
In a typically awkward way, Major League Baseball has been pulled into America’s discussion about racial injustice. Some teams are playing. Some aren’t. Two teams walked off the field after the national anthem. But across the sport, one theme became clear: Baseball shouldn’t avoid potentially difficult conversations and decisions regarding social issues. Though the process may be imperfect, there was agreement that coaches, players and teams should speak their mind.“This is at the forefront now,” said Oakland infielder Tony Kemp, who is Black. “By sitting out tonight’s game, I feel like it’s just a small building block of what we want to see. These couple days are historic times in sports. One day our kids are going to look back and ask us what was going on and what did we do to help bring awareness to these issues in the world and we’re going to say, ‘One game we just decided not to play.’”Oakland's game at Texas was among seven that were postponed by Thursday evening, along with Philadelphia... Thu Aug 27 202009:26Mets' Smith pleads through tears: 'People still don't care'
NEW YORK (AP) — Mets slugger Dominic Smith doesn't care if white teammates join him in kneeling for the national anthem. Doesn't need them to cut a check to his charity, either.“If you give your time, that’s the only way we can change,” he said.Smith spoke through tears Wednesday night after deciding for the first time to protest during “The Star-Spangled Banner” before New York played the Miami Marlins. It was a last-minute decision, spurred by reports he'd seen moments earlier about athletes boycotting games across the country. While the Mets were at Citi Field, three Major League Baseball games were postponed, along with games in the NBA, Major League Soccer and the WNBA. The athlete-driven protests are a reaction to the shooting by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Sunday of Jacob Blake, a Black man, apparently in the back while three of his children looked on.By the time Smith recognized the gravity of actions being taken by other professional athletes, the Mets and Marlins were deep...
