Matzek won his third game of the season Monday, giving up two runs on eight hits while striking out seven over seven innings versus the Giants.
Matzek made short work of a struggling Giants offense, needing only 90 pitches to get through seven innings. The rookie improves to 3-9 with a 5.14 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 60:32 K:BB ratio. Matzek will pitch in Arizona on Saturday.

Matzek pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five batters before picking up his ninth loss of the year(2-9) in Tuesday's game against the Royals.
Even though he picked up the loss, this was one of Matzek's better outings on the year. He now has just six quality outings in his 14 starts in the big leagues. Matzek still has trouble with his control and sports a mediocre 53:30 K:BB ratio in 77 innings pitched. His next start is scheduled for Monday on the road against the Giants.

Matzek (2-8) took the loss Wednesday against the Padres, striking out a season-high nine batters but also surrendering five runs over five innings.
Despite pitching in the cozy confines of Petco Park on Wednesday, Matzek still managed to yield two home runs, also tying a season-high. After shutting out the Pirates over seven innings on July 26, the young lefty has since been blown up for 17 runs over his last 15.2 innings, resulting in his season ERA jumping over a full run during that time.

Matzek (2-7) allowed three runs on four hits over five innings as he took the loss, while giving up five walks on Friday against the Diamondbacks.
The Rockies young rookie struggled most of the night with his control, although things could've been much worse if not for being bailed out after walking the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Matzek has really had some hard times on the road this season where he is now 0-4, with a 6.00-plus ERA.

Matzek was rocked for eight runs in four innings in Saturday's loss to the Tigers.
Matzek allowed 10 hits, walked two, and gave up eight earned runs for his sixth loss of the season. He pitched only four plus innings, giving up at least a run in each of those innings. His ERA is now 5.31.

Matzek will likely slot back into the rotation Saturday against the Tigers, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
After he was used for two innings in relief in Tuesday's 16-inning game, Matzek was scratched from Thursday's start, and it wasn't immediately certain when he might draw back in. It appears he'll now take the mound Saturday, after the originally scheduled starter, Yohan Flande, was moved to long relief Thursday and covered 1.2 innings out of the bullpen. Matzek has performed better than expected since making his MLB debut June 11, carrying a 4.39 ERA over 55.1 innings, but he's not an especially enticing streaming option vs. a respectable offense like the Tigers.

After he was called upon to cover the final two innings of Tuesday's 16-inning loss, Matzek will likely be scratched from his scheduled start Thursday vs. the Cubs.
Matzek was the ninth pitcher used Tuesday night by the Rockies, who battled with the Cubs for six hours and 27 minutes, the longest game in the history of both franchises. The lefty ultimately cracked in the 16th inning, loading the bases on a walk, hit by pitch and single before surrendering a walk-off sacrifice fly to Starlin Castro. The team probably won't announce their rotation plans for the rest of the week until later Wednesday, with Matzek expected to get pushed back to start at some point during the weekend series with the Tigers.
Sat Jul 26 201423:09Matzek tosses seven scoreless versus Bucs
Tyler Matzek hurled seven innings of shutout ball Saturday to help the Rockies rout the Pirates.
Matzek was backed by an active Colorado offense and simply cruised, allowing only three hits and two walks. He struck out three. The 23-year-old left-hander is now 2-4 with a 4.28 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 54 2/3 innings this season. He has the talent to put together a nice string of outings, but consistency has been an issue in 2014 for Matzek and the entire Rockies pitching staff.

Tue Jul 8 201401:03Tyler Matzek gives up five runs in loss
Tyler Matzek fell to 1-3 after surrendering five runs in six innings Monday against the Padres.
Matzek hasn't embarrassed himself since his callup, but there's no way he can give up five runs and win with the way the Rockies are hitting now. He's 1-3 with a 4.79 ERA and a 22/11 K/BB ratio in 35 2/3 innings over six starts.

Wed Jul 2 201421:44Matzek's quality start results in no-decision
Tyler Matzek got a no-decision, allowing three runs over 6 1/3 innings in Wednesday's loss to the Nationals.
Overall a solid start for Matzek, who yielded all three of his runs in the fourth on a Jayson Werth two-run homer and an Ian Desmond RBI single. The lefty allowed six hits and walked one while striking out six in the effort. Now with a 4.25 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP, and an 18/7 K/BB ratio, Matzek will take on the light-hitting Padres at home in his next start.

Sat Jun 28 201400:11Matzek allows one run in six innings vs MIL
Tyler Matzek allowed one run over six innings in his start against the Brewers on Friday. The Brewers won 3-2, but Matzek did not factor into the decision.
Matzek dueled with Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse in what was a low-scoring affair. He struck out three over six innings, scattered five hits and walked one. The lone run to cross the plate against Matzek came on a sixth inning Jonathan Lucroy single. This was just Matzek's fourth start of the season. He bounced back nicely from his last start, in which he gave up five runs to (them again) the Brewers.

Sun Jun 22 201421:27Matzek gives up five runs in loss to Brewers
Tyler Matzek allowed five runs over 5 1/3 innings in Sunday's loss to the Brewers.
Matzek has gotten progressively worse in his three starts, with Sunday being the worst of the bunch. He gave up seven hits, including an Aramis Ramirez two-run homer, and walked four more on the afternoon. He owns a 5.19 ERA and 1.62 WHIP through 17 1/3 innings, and he'll get his shot at redemption when the two clubs meet again on Friday.

Tue Jun 17 201401:29Matzek gives up 10 hits, 3 runs in loss to LA
Tyler Matzek allowed three runs on 10 hits over five innings Monday, taking the loss against the Dodgers.
Matzek impressed in his MLB debut Wednesday -- limiting the Braves to two runs over seven-plus innings -- but Los Angeles ensured his first game against a division rival didn't go as smoothly. The rookie 23-year-old left-hander was pitching about an hour away from his hometown of Mission Viejo, and it's possible nerves were an issue. Despite possessing good stuff, the 11th overall pick in the 2009 draft failed to strike out a batter tonight. Matzek has a Sunday matinee scheduled against the Brewers on Blake Street.

Thu Jun 12 201401:28Matzek fans seven, earns win in MLB debut
Tyler Matzek held the Braves to two runs over seven-plus innings Wednesday, earning a win in his MLB debut.
It was an impressive outing from the 23-year-old left-hander, who hadn't exactly been lighting it up this season at the Triple-A level. He struck out seven Atlanta batters and did not issue a walk, carrying a shutout into the eighth inning. Matzek was once considered a top pitching prospect and wouldn't be the first pitcher to suddenly blossom in the majors. But we still consider him a risky fantasy play going forward.

Wed Jun 11 201417:06Rockies call up Matzek for Wednesday debut
Rockies recalled LHP Tyler Matzek from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Matzek is scheduled to make his major league debut on Wednesday night against the Braves. The 23-year-old hasn't posted great numbers this season at the Triple-A level and is not a good fantasy bet versus Atlanta. He was the 11th overall pick in the 2009 draft.

Tue Jun 10 201408:43Rockies calling up Matzek to start Wednesday
The Rockies will call up left-hander Tyler Matzek to start Wednesday against the Braves.
It will be his major league debut. The move is mostly out of necessity, as Jordan Lyles (hand) and Eddie Butler (shoulder) have both hit the disabled list over the past few days. Matzek, 23, has a 4.05 ERA and 61/31 K/BB ratio in 66 2/3 innings over 12 starts in Triple-A this season. He has impressed his control somewhat, but he's a risky play in fantasy leagues.

Mon Jun 9 201418:19Matzek, Morales in mix for Wednesday start
Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports that it will be either Tyler Matzek or Franklin Morales taking Eddie Butler's (shoulder) spot in the rotation Wednesday.
It was Morales who was booted from the rotation last week when Butler arrived, but the Rockies seem more likely to give Matzek a shot. The former first-round pick has put up a 4.05 ERA while striking out 61 in 66 2/3 innings at Triple-A Colorado Springs this season. A start at Coors against the Braves would certainly be a stiff first test.

Sat Jun 7 201411:31Rockies RHP prospect Matzek fans nine
Rockies right-handed pitching prospect Tyler Matzek struck out nine batters in six innings for Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Matzek's well-documented command struggles contribute to his inconsistent results despite electric stuff. Colorado Springs is one of the best hitting environments in the major leagues, and opposing batters are hitting .265/.340/.413 against him for the season. However, he has 61 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings, and his walk rate has dropped to 4.2 BB/9, which is the lowest level of his professional career.

Sun Jun 1 201411:06Rockies could promote Tyler Matzek
The Rockies could promote pitching prospect Tyler Matzek to replace Franklin Morales in the rotation.
Morales holds a 6.03 ERA over 62 2/3 innings this season and is probably bound for the bullpen shortly. Matzek, the 11th overall pick in the 2011 draft, holds a 3.20 ERA with 50 strikeouts over 56 1/3 innings at Triple-a Colorado Springs. He's still walking too many (25), but the lefty probably deserves a shot at this point.

Tue Apr 8 201409:22Rockies LHP prospect Matzek starts strong
Rockies left-handed pitching prospect Tyler Matzek struck out 11 and allowed two hits, two walks, and one run in his Triple-A debut.
Matzek struck out seven in six innings during spring training, while keeping his walks down. Matzek's struggles have been well documented, including spending two weeks with his high school coach in 2011 after struggling with his command and pitch velocity. He had a good year in Double-A last year, though his strikeout rate dropped precipitously. Keep an eye on him, as he could be called up to be the lefty who splits up Gray and Butler for the next few years.
