Fri Jun 22 201212:08Felipe Paulino will need Tommy John surgery
Felipe Paulino has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will likely need Tommy John surgery.
Well, that came out of nowhere. Paulino made a rehab start with Double-A Northwest Arkansas Wednesday and had been slated to rejoin the Royals rotation next week, but evidently he hurt himself during the outing. It's a big blow to a Royals rotation that's already lost Danny Duffy to Tommy John surgery.

Felipe Paulino (groin) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks over three innings Wednesday in a rehab start for Double-A Northwest Arkansas.
It's not the ideal results, obviously, but Paulino evidently came through the outing healthy and should rejoin the rotation as expected on Monday. It's not clear at this point who he will replace among the starting five.

As it turns out, Paulino wasn't hurt when hit when he was caught with a Ben Revere liner but rather on a pitch he delivered to Justin Morneau. It's not clear at this point how severe the ailment is, but we'll update his status when more is known. Luis Mendoza replaced Paulino on the mound.

Sat May 26 201220:09Felipe Paulino walks five in no-decision
Felipe Paulino gave up three earned runs over 5 2/3 innings as part of a no-decision in Baltimore Saturday.
Paulino wasn't sharp. He walked five, gave up two homers and was forced to throw 109 pitches. It's a concern as control issues have capped the 28-year-old's reliability through the year. On the bright side, he does have 34 strikeouts in 31 innings on the season and gets the A's next.

Mon May 21 201222:45Felipe Paulino terrific against Yanks
Felipe Paulino was superb Monday, shutting the Yankees out on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over 6 2/3 innings in the 6-0 win.
Paulino has now tossed 12 2/3 scoreless innings in two starts against the Yankees this season and spun seven scoreless frames against the Orioles the last time out. We're not convinced he'll keep it up over the long haul, but Paulino can be nasty when he's on and should remain in lineups with a 1.42 ERA over his first four starts. He'll get the Orioles this weekend.

Fri May 11 201222:59Paulino struggles in loss to White Sox
Felipe Paulino struggled against the White Sox on Friday, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings of work.
He did manage to strike out six and walked only one in the game. It was a far cry from his season debut against the Yankees, but was still good to see the maintained improvement in his control. With his dominating stuff, he's well worthy of a flyer in most mixed leagues. He'll try to find some consistency and get back in the win column when he takes on the Orioles on Wednesday.

Sat May 5 201222:50Paulino shuts down Yankees in season debut
Felipe Paulino returned from the disabled list on Saturday night and promptly dominated the Yankees, allowing just four hits over six shutout innings.
Paulino showed off his tantalizing stuff and potential, fanning six and walking just two in the game. He's always had tremendous upside, but his problem has been consistent control. He'll try to carry over the momentum from this strong start when he takes on the White Sox in Chicago next week. The 28-year-old right-hander is worth a flier in most fantasy leagues.
