Despaigne is slated to pitch either in a minor league game or against the Royals on Tuesday, the Union-Tribune reports.

Despaigne is still competing with Brandon Morrow for the fifth spot in the rotation. Dennis Lin of the Union-Tribune reports that the competition may not be decided until after the Padres leave Arizona to get ready for Opening Day. Morrow has been dealing with a blister on his finger, which cost him a start last week. Both Despaigne and Morrow are slated to pitch Tuesday.

Discomfort in Despaigne's right lat muscle resulted in an abbreviated outing last Friday against the Giants, and an MRI showed some "action" in the region, according to manager Bud Black. However, Despaigne threw a pain-free side session Tuesday and could still start this weekend, possibly Sunday's regular-season finale. Eric Stults is currently penciled in to start Saturday for San Diego.

Despaigne has been undergoing treatment to address the soreness, and plans on playing catch Monday evening. His next turn in the rotation would have landed on Sept. 24, but it now appears that this start may be in jeopardy. With the Padres securely out of the playoff hunt, there's little reason to push the 27-year-old Despaigne if there are any questions about his health.

Despaigne (4-7) was masterful on Friday night against the Giants as he pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits, one walk, while striking out six.

The Giants couldn't hit a lick against Despaigne on Friday, as the 27-year old righty threw 15 first-pitch strikes to the 24 batters he faced. Despaigne only allowed one batter to reach third base all night long, as he lowered his seasonal ERA to 3.36.

Despaigne was tagged for seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts over 4.1 innings Monday in a loss to the Dodgers.

Despainge is finding it more difficult to get hitters out his second time around the league. After allowing only seven runs in his first six outings, the right-hander has given up 26 runs in 45.2 innings (5.12 ERA) over the next eight starts. Despainge's turn in the rotation comes up again Sunday in Arizona.

Despaigne pitched seven solid innings Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, allowing only one run on four hits (no walks), while striking out four in the no-decision.

Despaigne has had an up-and-down season, while sometimes having issues with control (25 walks in 79.1 innings pitched). However, Despaigne was on his game Tuesday and still owns a fine 3.06 ERA and 1.18 WHIP on the year. His next start is set for Sunday against the Rockies on the road.

Despaigne allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out nine over seven innings in a no-decision against the Brewers on Wednesday.

Nine strikeouts is a high for Despaigne in 12 career outings. The Cuban native recorded only his second quality start in six turns since July 20, going 1-4 over that span. Despagne owns a 4.08 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, .261 average against in August, bug has seen an uptick in strikeouts with 27 over 28.2 innings this month. He faces the Diamondbacks at home Tuesday.

Despaigne didn't have his best stuff on Friday against the Diamondbacks, as he gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits in five innings pitched while taking the loss.

Since being called up in late June, Despaigne (3-5) has really cooled off. He's only had one quality start over his last six games started, while seeing his ERA bump up from 1.66 to 3.44 during the same six-game stretch.

Despaigne struggled through four innings in Sunday's loss to St. Louis, giving up six hits and five earned runs with one strikeout and one walk.

The trouble started early, with Despaigne allowing five hits and four runs in the bottom of the first. There's been some serious regression after Despaigne's excellent start to his MLB career, as the 27-year-old rookie has surrendered 34 hits and 17 earned runs while sporting a 20:12 K:BB ratio over his previous five starts. As a result, his ERA has risen from 1.66 to 3.28 during that span.

Despaigne pitched seven shutout innings, giving up just five hits and two walks while striking out eight batters before picking up his third win (3-3) of the year in Tuesday's victory over the Rockies.

After a couple of rocky outings, where he allowed 15 runs (12 earned) in his previous three starts (spanning 15 innings), Despaigne threw a gem Tuesday night to get back on track. Although he has problems with the free pass, issuing 22 walks in 56.1 innings pitched, Despaigne does possesses a quality 2.72 ERA and 1.24 WHIP on the year. His next start is set for Sunday on the road against the Cardinals.

Despaigne (2-3) was rocked for six runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.2 innings Thursday against the Cardinals.

This is certainly not what Despaigne's fantasy owners were looking for in a home outing. He's given up 11 runs (eight earned) in his last two starts, spanning 9.1 innings, but has a decent matchup on the road against the Twins next week.

It was an ugly nosedive back to earth for the Cuban right-hander, who carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning last Sunday versus the Mets. He walked five Atlanta hitters on Saturday and gave up six hits. Despaigne does not have great raw stuff and is not a safe fantasy bet going forward despite his still-sparkling 1.66 ERA.

Despaigne was far from perfect, as he had issued three walks and hit two batters before Daniel Murphy broke up the no-hit bid with a line drive double to left-center in the eighth inning. Murphy later scored the Mets' first and game-tying run on a David Wright single up the middle. Overall, Despaigne allowed just the two hits and three walks while striking out five. He has been fantastic over five starts for the Padres, now carrying a 1.31 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP, and a 17/11 K/BB ratio. Despaigne will take the mound next on Saturday in Atlanta against the Braves.

The Cuban right-hander isn't overpowering, but he's begun his major league career with four consecutive quality starts. Despaigne, who should be owned in most formats as long as he's pitching well, is 2-1 with a 1.35 ERA and 0.98 WHIP.
