Wed Jun 25 201422:11Burnett solid, but takes seventh loss vs. MIA
A.J. Burnett fell to 5-7, allowing three runs over seven innings in Wednesday's loss to the Marlins.
Burnett was undone by a poor defensive play by Domonic Brown in left field in the fourth inning. Marcell Ozuna hit a catchable line drive to left field, but Brown misjudged it and it turned into an RBI double. Jarrod Saltalamacchia would double in two more runs after the play as well. Overall, Burnett yielded five hits and three walks while striking out eight. The right-hander now has a 3.89 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP, and a 85/47 K/BB ratio. He'll face the Marlins again in his next outing, this time on the road.

He's been a workhorse over his last two starts, going eight innings against the Cubs last time out and now nine innings against the Cards. The gem brings his ERA down to 3.89.

A.J. Burnett allowed three runs on eight hits over eight innings in Sunday's loss to the Cubs.
Burnett was efficient, needing just 104 pitches to get through eight innings, but wasn't quite as effective. He didn't walk a batter, though -- a good sign for the National League leader in walks allowed -- and struck out four. The loss dropped him to 4-6 with a 4.17 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. He'll look to get back in the win column Friday against the Cardinals.

Burnett will take his 4.24 ERA and 70/43 K/BB ratio into his next start at home against the Cubs.

A.J. Burnett fell to 3-5, allowing eight runs over six innings in Wednesday's loss to the Nationals.

With 37 free passes in 73 2/3 innings, Burnett is already more than halfway to his total in the category from all of last season. He'll bring a 3.79 ERA into a start against the Nationals next week.

Sun May 25 201416:26Burnett serves up 11 hits in loss to Dodgers
A.J. Burnett allowed six runs -- four earned -- on 11 hits over seven innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Sunday.
Burnett's counterpart, Josh Beckett, didn't allow a hit on the afternoon, so Burnett would have had to be pretty good to earn the win on this day. His 11 hits allowed were the most in a game this year, and he also walked one while striking out three in the outing. It's nothing more than a bad start for the 37-year-old, as he still owns a 3.51 ERA for the year. He'll look for a better result Friday against the Mets.

Wed Apr 23 201401:49SP Burnett coughs up 2 runs to Dodgers in ND
A.J. Burnett surrendered two runs over 6 2/3 frames, striking out five, in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Tuesday.
The veteran right-hander walked one and surrendered five hits. He aided his own cause at the dish, going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Burnett was in line for the victory, but he couldn't manage to work around a Dee Gordon double and steal in the seventh. With two outs, Justin Turner singled the speedster home to tie the game 2-2, and skipper Ryne Sandberg summoned reliever Jacob Diekman. Burnett, 0-1 with a 2.73 ERA and 1.45 WHIP, has a date in Arizona against the sinking Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Burnett will need surgery eventually, but he's going to try to pitch through the hernia for the rest of the season. So far, so good.

A.J. Burnett (groin) will undergo an ultrasound on Monday.
Burnett threw a bullpen session Sunday, and although it went well overall he admitted to feeling a pull in his groin muscle on two occasions while throwing out of the stretch. The righty will know after Monday's exam whether he'll be cleared to make his next start on Wednesday. "I feel good, but I want my mind to be 100 percent," Burnett said Sunday. "Let's just hope it's not a (sports) hernia or something. That's what I'm worried about. Tomorrow will give me peace of mind. But as far as physically, today was a good day today. A lot better."

It was bad from the outset for Burnett, as the Cubs hung four runs on the right-hander in the first inning.
