Tue Apr 1 201423:23Burnett gets no-decision in Phils debut
A.J. Burnett got the no-decision, allowing one run in six innings of work during Tuesday's start against the Rangers.
Burnett allowed seven hits, walked two, and struck out three in his Phillies debut. Six of his 18 outs came on the ground, which is a bit low for the right-hander, but he was otherwise solid. With Cole Hamels out potentially through April, the Phillies will need Burnett to be reliable out of the #2 spot in the rotation.

Thu Mar 27 201416:16A.J. Burnett strikes out six Phillies
A.J. Burnett allowed one run over five innings and struck out six against the Blue Jays on Thursday.
Burnett finished the spring on a high note after entering with a 7.53 ERA and a 6/8 K/BB ratio in 14 1/3 innings. He did, however, hit his seventh batter today. Maybe he's still taking out his frustrations after going unsigned for so long.

Fri Mar 7 201417:38A.J. Burnett pounded for six runs
A.J. Burnett pitched three innings and allowed six runs in a loss to the Orioles on Friday.
The Orioles seemed to show the most consistent interest in Burnett over the winter until the Phillies stepped up with their $15 million offer. Burnett has a 12.60 ERA after his first two spring starts, but it's not a cause for concern just yet.

Sun Mar 2 201416:45A.J. Burnett allows one run in tow innings
Facing his former team, A.J. Burnett allowed one run and one hit in two innings against the Pirates on Sunday.
Burnett didn't sign until after pitchers and catchers reported, but he's managed to keep pace with the rest of the Phillies' hurlers. He'll probably start the second or third game of the season for the club.

Sun Feb 16 201409:02Burnett's deal with Phillies becomes official
Phillies signed RHP A.J. Burnett to a one-year, $16 million contract.
The deal also includes performance bonuses, a mutual/player option for 2015 and a limited no-trade clause. Most figured that Burnett would wind up back with the Pirates if he decided to continue playing, but the Phillies offered him a lot more money and he jumped at it. The veteran righty will settle in as a fine No. 3 starter behind Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee.

Thu Feb 13 201411:08Bucs made $8.5 million offer to A.J. Burnett
According to John Perrotto of the Beaver County Times, the Pirates' marriage with A.J. Burnett ended last fall when the club offered him a one-year, $8.5 million deal.
Burnett was insulted by the offer, which would have represented a 47 percent paycut from his $16.5 million salary in 2013. The veteran right-hander had stated a desire to retire as a member of the Bucs, but he wound up taking a one-year, $16 million offer from the Phillies this week. Perrotto notes in the Beaver County Times that Pirates owner Bob Nutting recently bought his second ski resort. Pittsburgh's final offer to Burnett this winter was $12 million.

Wed Feb 12 201420:57Pirates offered Burnett $12 million to return
Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports the Pirates offered A.J. Burnett $12 million to return for 2014.
The Phillies ultimately blew the Pirates out of the water with their $16 million offer, coaxing Burnett away from Pittsburgh. It would have been interesting to see how things would have played out if the Bucs had offered Burnett a $14.1 million qualifying offer earlier this offseason, but it was obviously a price they were unwilling to pay to retain the services of the 37-year-old. They'll roll with a rotation of Francisco Liriano, Gerrit Cole, Charlie Morton, Wandy Rodriguez and Edinson Volquez this season.

Wed Feb 12 201417:55Burnett's deal with Phils carries 2015 option
According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, A.J. Burnett's new one-year, $16 million contract with the Phillies includes a mutual option for the 2015 season.
No word yet on the value of that option. Burnett signed with the Phillies on Tuesday morning after being courted by the Nationals, Orioles, and Pirates. He posted an outstanding 3.30 ERA and 209/67 K/BB ratio in 191 innings last season for Pittsburgh and should maintain considerable fantasy value across the across the state in Philadelphia.

Mon Feb 10 201423:25Burnett 'in discussions with multiple clubs'
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that A.J. Burnett is "in discussions with multiple clubs."
Rosenthal references Todd Zolecki of MLB.com's report that the Phillies are in on the right-hander, and he says the Pirates are "presumably another" club talking to Burnett. Indications to this point are that it will likely come down to those two teams, but Rosenthal's report suggests other squads could be in the mix, as well.

Mon Feb 10 201422:38Phillies 'very much' still in on A.J. Burnett
Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports that the Phillies are "very much still in the running" for A.J. Burnett.
General manager Ruben Amaro indicated last week that the Phils were unlikely to make any big moves before Opening Day, but Zolecki says "the chances have improved" since then. Philadelphia's chief competition for Burnett is the Pirates, and it seems likely that they'll have to offer a notable sum more to talk the righty into leaving Pittsburgh.

Fri Feb 7 201415:51Nationals to make late play for A.J. Burnett?
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that there is "speculation going around baseball circles" that the Nationals could consider a late play for A.J. Burnett.
It's not what the Pirates want to hear after the Orioles and Phillies appear to have faded into the background. However, it does appear just to be speculation at this point, with one Nationals source telling Heyman that the club will "most likely" stick with what they have in their rotation. Burnett held a 3.30 ERA and 209/67 K/BB ratio in 191 innings last season for the Pirates.

Fri Feb 7 201413:10A.J. Burnett to Orioles 'doesn't look good'
Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports that A.J. Burnett signing with the Orioles "doesn't look good."
Kubatko notes that talks are "not dead but (the) feeling is he wants to pitch in (the) NL." The report comes on the heels of Phillies GM Ruben Amaro saying the club was likely done with their big moves. Given that those two teams and the Pirates have been seen as the favorites to sign Burnett, the odds of the right-hander winding up back in Pittsburgh appear to be increasing. He held a 3.30 ERA and 209/67 K/BB ratio in 191 innings last season for the Bucs.

Fri Feb 7 201410:30Phillies unlikely to sign A.J. Burnett
Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro indicated Friday that the club is unlikely to sign A.J. Burnett.
"I don't suspect we'll be doing anything," Amaro said. "I think we've got what we've got. I suspect we'll go into the season with what we've got - or at least spring training with what we've got. We're always looking, always trolling. I know there are guys out there, but I don't suspect us having anything major coming through." The competition for Burnett had reportedly been down to the Pirates, Orioles and Phillies, and it sounds like the Phils can be crossed off the list. Burnett supposedly would prefer to pitch in the National League, but the fact that he lives near Baltimore could push him to the American League.

Sun Feb 2 201410:12Bucs, O's, Phils likely finalists for Burnett
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that "it's really looking like a Baltimore-Philadelphia-Pittsburgh runoff" for the services of A.J. Burnett.
Burnett has decided to pitch in 2014 and is willing to look at clubs other than the Pirates. The Blue Jays and Rays have also shown interest, but it's looking like a three-team race for the right-hander. Burnett has loyalty to the Pirates, but he lives just outside of Baltimore and Peter Gammons reported earlier this week that the Orioles are "all in" on the righty.

Fri Jan 31 201422:46Blue Jays contemplaing Burnett reunion
According to TSN.ca, the Blue Jays could be contemplating a reunion with free agent hurler A.J. Burnett.
The 37-year-old right-hander recently decided that he's planning to return for a 16th season, and he has generated significant interest from around the league. He previously pitched in Toronto from 2006-2008 where he posted a 3.94 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 525/191 K/BB ratio over 522 2/3 innings. For fantasy purposes, his value would take a big hit with a potential move to the American League East.

Fri Jan 31 201413:27O's plan to top $100 million in payroll
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Orioles "remain in contact" with the agents for A.J. Burnett, Nelson Cruz and Fernando Rodney.
He also notes that they could pursue Ervin Santana or Ubaldo Jimenez if things don't work out with Burnett, who appears to be their No. 1 target at the moment. Rosenthal says the Orioles' payroll is now in the $85 million range, but they plan on it topping $100 million. Clearly they're intent on making some notable additions before spring training.

Thu Jan 30 201411:17Report: O's all in on free agent A.J. Burnett
According to Peter Gammons of MLB Network, the Orioles are "all in" on free agent A.J. Burnett.
It was revealed earlier this week that Burnett will not retire and will instead open himself up to offers from all major league teams. The veteran right-hander makes his offseason home in Maryland, so a marriage with the O's seems like a perfect fit. Gammons also says the Rays have serious interest. Burnett, 37, posted a 3.30 ERA, 1.215 WHIP and 209/67 K/BB ratio in 191 innings last year for the Pirates.

Tue Jan 28 201416:50Burnett will pitch in 2014, open to all teams
A.J. Burnett plans to pitch in 2014 and is thought to be open to offers from all teams.
Burnett stated at the end of the 2013 season that he was either going to retire or return for one final season in Pittsburgh, but he has apparently changed his mind. "I suspect he is going to open himself up to the market," a source told Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Burnett, 37, registered an outstanding 3.30 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 209/67 K/BB ratio in 191 innings last year for the Pirates.

Fri Jan 24 201411:24A.J. Burnett yet to make decision
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that A.J. Burnett has yet to decide whether he'll pitch in 2014 or retire.
Burnett is certainly dragging things out, but Heyman says the veteran right-hander "still has a bit of time" because "most free agent pitchers haven't decided on teams yet." Pirates president Frank Coonelly said Thursday that the club has "turned the page" on Burnett but also added that they'd "love to have him" if he ultimately decides to continue his career. The feeling is that Burnett will either pitch for the Pirates or retire, but the Orioles are also known to have interest in him.
