Sat Apr 28 2012 | 22:29 | Gomes blasts 4th HR in loss to Orioles |
Jonny Gomes accounted for all of the Athletics' scoring on Saturday with a solo home run in a losing effort against the Orioles. |
The solo blast off Wei-Yin Chen in the sixth inning was Gomes' fourth of the season, and his lone hit in three trips. He's provided a solid source of power against left-handed pitching for Oakland, though he's hitting just .216 on the season. Gomes still makes a decent spot play against left-handed starters for those in daily AL-only leagues. |

Wed Apr 11 2012 | 20:33 | Jonny Gomes homers in Oakland's win |
Jonny Gomes hit a two-run homer and recorded a game-winning HBP as the A's edged the Royals 5-4 in 12 innings Wednesday. |
He was the second straight hitter plunked by Jonathan Broxton in the 12th, but Gomes' came with the bases loaded, ending the game. With two homers and eight strikeouts in 13 at-bats, Gomes has certainly been an all-or-nothing hitter so far. He'll be limited to playing against lefties unless the A's lose an outfielder to injury. Even then, it's probably his ideal role at this point of his career. |

Tue Jan 24 2012 | 11:05 | Gomes' one-yr. deal with A's worth $1 million |
Athletics signed OF Jonny Gomes to a one-year, $1 million contract. |
The deal also carries $200,000 worth of performance-based incentives. Gomes posted a rough .209/.325/.389 batting line with the Reds and Nationals last season, but he has an .877 career OPS against left-handed pitchers and should fit nicely into a corner-outfield platoon out in Oakland. |

Fri Jan 20 2012 | 17:10 | Gomes' deal with A's worth around $1.1M |
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Jonny Gomes' contract with the Athletics is worth around $1.1 million. |
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle was the first to report that a deal was close. It appears the signing will be made official once he passes a physical. Gomes, 31, batted just .209/.325/.389 with the Reds and Nationals last season, but owns an .877 career OPS against left-handed pitching. He'll have some value as a platoon option. |

Fri Jan 20 2012 | 13:19 | Jonny Gomes reaches deal with Athletics |
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Athletics have reached an agreement with free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes. |
It's a major league deal, and we assume it's for one year. Gomes is probably best suited as a designated hitter, which is where he could get a good chunk of at-bats in Oakland, but he sports a nifty .281/.375/.501 career batting line against left-handed pitchers. He's also been lauded as a good clubhouse guy. |

Thu Jan 19 2012 | 16:25 | Oakland nearing agreement with Jonny Gomes |
According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the A's are nearing a deal with Jonny Gomes. |
Slusser's source says Gomes, a native of Northern California, "could be in green and gold by Monday." The 31-year-old is a poor defensive outfielder, but he has a sparkling .281/.375/.501 career batting line against left-handed pitchers and could fit into a platoon with some of the A's younger options in left and right field. |

Sun Nov 20 2011 | 09:56 | Rockies interested in Jonny Gomes |
Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies are interested in free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes. |
The Rox would like to pair Gomes with Seth Smith as part of a platoon in right field. It would be a nice duo, as Smith smashes right-handers and Gomes boasts a .281/.375/.501 career batting line against southpaws. Smith might be traded, though, and if he is, the Rockies might then target a full-time right fielder rather than Gomes. |

Mon Sep 26 2011 | 15:08 | Jonny Gomes wants to re-sign with Nationals |
Jonny Gomes said Sunday that he's hoping to re-sign with the Nationals this offseason. |
It's the type of thing that any player would say, especially a 30-year-old impending free agent with a lack of potential suitors. "I think this team is going to be friggin' good," Gomes told reporters. "I don't really think it's going to be a sleeper, either. I think everyone knows, from guys I've talked to on the team other team that we've played, from what I've seen. I've seen a little taste of the farm system coming up. I definitely want to be a part of it, absolutely." |

Wed Aug 10 2011 | 21:52 | Jonny Gomes will be starter in LF for now |
Nationals manager Davey Johnson said Jonny Gomes will be his starter in left field for the time being. |
Gomes entered Wednesday hitting .320 (8-for-25) with two home runs and four RBI since joining the Nats. He had been sharing time with Laynce Nix, but Nix is hitting just .188/.235/.333 in the second half and has also battled the flu and a nagging Achilles injury. Gomes is worth playing in NL-only formats while he's getting everyday at-bats. |

Tue Aug 9 2011 | 22:58 | Gomes hits homer in 2nd straight game |
Jonny Gomes hit a home run in his second consecutive game, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Tuesday's win against the Cubs. |
It was his 13th homer of the year. The veteran won't get enough at-bats down the stretch for the non-contending Nats to be relevant in fantasy outside of very deep NL-only formats. He's hitting .222/.344/.428 on the year. |

Sun Aug 7 2011 | 18:56 | Gomes hits his first HR as a Nat |
Jonny Gomes hit his first home run as a National in Sunday's win over the Rockies. |
It's Gomes' 12th homer of the year, but his first in 25 games dating back to his time in Cincy. The veteran won't get enough at-bats down the stretch for the non-contending Nats to be relevant in fantasy. |

Wed Jul 20 2011 | 17:33 | Report: Braves interested in Jonny Gomes |
FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal report that the Braves are interested in the Reds' Jonny Gomes. |
Might this be the right-handed hitter David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the Braves were close to acquiring? On the surface, adding Gomes an addition of Gomes might not make a lot of sense for the Braves. But, he can be a useful player if he's used only against left-handed pitching, having posted a .993 OPS against lefties this season and an .856 mark against them last year. |

Fri Jun 10 2011 | 02:50 | Jonny Gomes goes 3-for-4 |
Jonny Gomes went 3-for-4 and drove in a run for the Reds on Thursday. |
Playing primarily against lefties, Gomes has raised his average from .168 on May 26 to .213 now. The Reds could opt to give him another shot as a full-timer since Fred Lewis hasn't done anything with his playing time against righties. |

Sun May 29 2011 | 09:45 | Gomes gets four hits in return to lineup |
In his first start since May 21, Jonny Gomes went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored Saturday. |
"He's been working," Reds manager Dusty Baker said before the game. "... He's looked better. You've got to put him in there sooner or later if he's on the team. We need his production sooner or later. The others have done well. But the other guys don't have the potential to be a game-changer like Jonny does." Gomes entered the game hitless in his last 16 at-bats and with a .118 average in May. He'll continue to share time with Chris Heisey and Fred Lewis. |

Sun May 15 2011 | 14:07 | Baker to mix and match in LF |
Reds manager Dusty Baker said he plans on mixing and matching Jonny Gomes, Chris Heisey and Fred Lewis in left field going forward. |
Baker has defended Gomes in the past, but he's evidently had enough with the lack of production. Heisey would seem to be in line to benefit the most here, but Lewis has played a decent amount since being activated from the DL, starting two of three games over the weekend. "Right now, Freddie is in a situation where we're trying to figure out when to use Freddie, against whom and give him the best chance and us the best chance," Baker said. "Same with Heisey. And the same with Jonny Gomes. There was a point when everybody wanted Jonny Gomes to play every day. There was a point when everybody wanted Laynce Nix to play every day. There was a point when everybody wanted Heisey to play every day. Those guys are more matchup guys, in my mind, at this point in their careers rather than every day guys." |

Wed May 4 2011 | 10:37 | Gomes out of Wednesday's lineup |
Jonny Gomes is out of Wednesday's lineup against the Astros. |
Gomes is batting just .155 over his first 71 at-bats against right-handed pitching this season, so he'll take a seat against Aneury Rodriguez. Chris Heisey will make the start in left and bat second. |

Fri Apr 29 2011 | 20:30 | Baker defends Jonny Gomes |
Reds manager Dusty Baker isn't planning on benching Jonny Gomes, hitting just .200, any time soon. |
"What do you do, just shelve Jonny?," Baker said. "On what Jonny did last year? Here it is April 20-something. If it's June 20-something and he's doing nothing, now we've got a different story. You just don't shelve somebody that quickly. Jonny deserves an extended period of time, (based) on (his) track record." Baker also recently said he hopes Gomes adopts a more "aggressive" approach at the plate. No matter what the Reds skipper says, Chris Heisey should be ready to swoop in if Gomes' struggles carry on for much longer. |

Wed Apr 27 2011 | 20:20 | Reds want Jonny Gomes to be more aggressive |
Reds manager Dusty Baker wants Jonny Gomes to be more aggressive. |
Gomes has drawn 18 walks already this season after drawing just 39 all of last year. But, he's in a 3-for-29 slump at the plate and Baker thinks it's because he's taking too many fastballs. "The main thing is we've got to get Jonny aggressive in the strike zone," Baker said. "He's taking fastballs and swinging at breaking balls. Some of that is a little bit of tension and wanting to do it so badly. We're just trying to get him to the point of relaxing. You can accomplish a lot of things with controlled aggression and relaxation." |

Sat Apr 16 2011 | 16:25 | Gomes homers twice in win over Bucs |
Jonny Gomes homered twice in an 11-2 win over the Pirates on Saturday afternoon. |
Gomes hit a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning and added a two-run blast in the sixth. The 30-year-old outfielder already has five homers and 13 RBI, which should be enough to get your attention, but the encouraging part is that he has already drawn 15 walks, giving him a .456 on-base percentage. We need to see more, but it's an intriguing trend. |
