Sun Mar 6 201109:17Gamel making some progress
Mat Gamel is finally making some progress with his strained oblique, as he was able to take grounders and flyballs Saturday.
Like teammate Corey Hart, who is dealing with a similar injury, he's not able to hit yet, but at least it appears he's moving in the right direction. Hart was also able to take some flyballs and made some throws. Though Hart is expected to be game-ready in a little over a week, it's not clear when Gamel's target return date is.

Thu Mar 3 201112:33Gamel not making progress from oblique injury
Mat Gamel is not making any progress in his rehab from a strained right oblique.
Not good. Gamel suffered the injury in the early days of camp, but the Brewers were hopeful that he would be able to pick up baseball activities soon. Because he's shown no signs of getting over the injury, the Brewers will back off for now. His chances of making the roster are shrinking by the minute.

Mon Feb 28 201108:53Gamel progressing from oblique injury
Brewers manager manager Ron Roenicke said Sunday that Mat Gamel (oblique) could resume swinging "in the next couple of days."
Gamel was told to rest for a week after straining his right oblique muscle early last week. The 25-year-old will still have an opportunity to win a spot on the Brewers' bench, but the former top prospect is quickly falling behind the competition.

Wed Feb 23 201110:37Gamel dealing with strained oblique muscle
Mat Gamel has a strained right oblique and will not participate in hitting drills for seven days.
More bad luck for Gamel. The 25-year-old was expected to make the Opening Day roster last season, but suffered a strained lat muscle behind his right shoulder in March. He ended up with just 15 at-bats with the big club for the entire season. The Brewers are currently looking at Gamel for a potential role off the bench.

Sat Feb 19 201109:43Gamel to play all over this spring
Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said that Mat Gamel will see action at both corner infield and outfield spots during spring training.
"He's going to bounce around," said Roenicke. "He's going to play some outfield in spring training. He may play some first base. He's been doing all of that so far. The guy can hit so if he can make us believe he can play a lot of positions, it helps him in making the team. If you were looking at it and in his shoes, you would think you'd be open to anything." A former top prospect, Gamel has struggled to gain traction in his three big league seasons and is looking at a backup job again this season. If he performs well off the bench, he could put himself in position to take over at first base next year if (when) Prince Fielder departs.

Fri Oct 8 201016:39Gamel has successful foot surgery
Mat Gamel underwent successful surgery to remove the sesamoid bone in his left foot last Thursday.
Gamel was bothered by the injury throughout most of the season and was finally shut down at the end of September. He is expected to be ready for spring training next season, though his future role on the club remains uncertain.

Mon Sep 27 201018:58Gamel needs surgery on toe
Mat Gamel has returned to Milwaukee in order to undergo season-ending surgery on his left big toe.
He's expected to be just fine in time for spring training. The 25-year-old former top prospect went 3-for-15 (.200) as a September call-up after spending most of the season with Triple-A Nashville. He's unlikely to have an everyday role with the Brewers next season unless the club trades one of their regulars.

Fri Sep 24 201009:15Macha thinks Gamel will be outfielder
Brewers manager Ken Macha said that he believes Mat Gamel, who made his first career start in left field Thursday, will end up as an outfielder.
"My assessment says that's where he's going to wind up, in the outfield," said Macha. "If you take a look at our club right now, we have three centerfielders and our rightfielder and leftfielder are both signed long term. So who knows what happens as things move forward. We might get in the winter and somebody might be interested in somebody and it's a deal that fits both clubs and somebody goes. It might not be Gamel. It might be one of the other guys." Gamel has also been told to work out at first base in an effort to increase his versatility, so perhaps the only way he sticks with the Brewers long-term is if Prince Fielder is traded or leaves via free agency.

Sun Sep 12 201011:13Gamel to get PT once McGehee reaches 100 RBI
Brewers manager Ken Macha said he might give Mat Gamel "a start or two" at third base when (if) Casey McGehee reaches 100 RBI.
McGehee is eight short of the century mark, so it's likely, though not a given, that he'll get there. Gamel has received just two at-bats since being recalled at the beginning of September.

Mon Aug 2 201011:51Gamel getting time at 1B, OF at Triple-A
Mat Gamel has begun playing first base and left field at Triple-A Nashville.
The Brewers are plenty satisfied with Casey McGehee at third base and want to give Gamel a bit more upward mobility at a different position. The 25-year-old has posted a nice-looking .300/.379/.476 batting line, eight homers, 13 doubles and 45 RBI in 210 at-bats this year for Triple-A Nashville. He could be in the major leagues by early September as a utility backup.

Fri Jun 4 201016:47Brewers activate, option 3B Gamel
Brewers activated third baseman Mat Gamel from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Nashville.
Gamel, who missed the first month and a half with a shoulder injury, has hit .269/.397/.404 in 15 minor league games since returning. There's no room for him in Milwaukee right now, but that could change if Prince Fielder is made available next month.
Sun May 23 201012:51Gamel moved to the 60-day disabled list
Brewers transferred 3B Mat Gamel from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The Brewers needed his spot on the 40-man roster to call up a relief pitcher due to a thin bullpen for Sunday's finale against the Twins. Gamel has started his rehab, but he'll be eligible to come off the DL before he's ready to rejoin the team, so this move won't set him back or change his timetable.
Wed May 19 201015:26Gamel (flu) will not start rehab on Wednesday
Mat Gamel (shoulder) will not begin his minor league rehab with High-A Brevard County on Wednesday due to illness.
Gamel was previously scheduled to kick off his rehab assignment on Wednesday, but it will now have to wait until later this week.

Wed May 19 201014:54Gamel (shoulder) to begin rehab assignment
Mat Gamel (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment with High-A Brevard County on Wednesday.
Gamel has been chomping at the bit in extended spring training. He's currently rehabbing a slight tear in the muscle behind his right shoulder. Because of the strong play of Casey McGehee, Gamel will likely play everyday at Triple-A once he's fully healthy.

Tue May 11 201011:43Gamel hoping to begin rehab assignment soon
Mat Gamel (shoulder) is pushing the Brewers to allow him to head out on a minor league rehab assignment.
Gamel is currently rehabbing at extended spring training and hating it, but the Brewers want him to take it easy with his sore right shoulder. He's hoping to report to Triple-A Nashville by late May. "That's the goal," he said. "If if was up to me, I would have been out of here already."
