Wed Mar 30 201113:14Ramirez away for personal reasons
Manny Ramirez is not with the Rays for Wednesday's game due to "personal reasons."
Doesn't sound like a major concern right now. We expect him to be in the starting lineup for Opening Day on Friday against the Orioles.

Fri Mar 18 201122:09Manny Ramirez hits third spring homer
Manny Ramirez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-3 win over the Red Sox.
It's Manny's third longball this spring, and he pushed his average up to .294. Though he has his obvious concerns, Ramirez is a potentially low-risk, high-reward fantasy option this season.

No word on the reason why, though the weather could have played a part in the decision. Sam Fuld will play left field, instead.

Tue Mar 1 201115:59Rays' Ramirez hits first spring homer
Manny Ramirez hit his first homer Tuesday off the Orioles' David Riske.
Ramirez, who is slated to hit cleanup behind Evan Longoria, is 4-for-7 in his first spring with the Rays.
Thu Feb 17 201109:32Manny has 'chip on his shoulder'
Manny Ramirez admitted Thursday that he's coming to Spring Training with a chip on his shoulder.
"I just got a chip on my shoulder that I want to be here, I want to get my stuff right and show people I can play," Ramirez said. A motivated Manny is a scary proposition, but, of course, we know that he can flip the motivated switch off at any time. Still, having to sign for just $2 million had to be a wake-up call for the slugger, and if he hopes to get a better contract next offseason he'll need to improve dramatically on his batting line from last season.

Mon Jan 31 201104:07Manny Ramirez says he's in great shape
Manny Ramirez told Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times that he is in terrific shape after working out extensively this off-season.
Last year the veteran outfielder was a bust, earning $20 million while hitting only 9 homers in 90 games. If his recent workouts translate into better hitting, this year he could be a bargain.

Mon Jan 24 201107:41Rays ink Manny Ramirez to one-year contract
Rays signed DH Manny Ramirez to a one-year, $2 million contract.
This may prove to be the steal of the offseason. Then again, it could also be a complete bust. Manny posted a strong .298/.409/.460 batting line in 2010 and still has a couple of homers left in that bat of his. As long as he's motivated -- and he should be in his second tour through the American League East -- he has the ability to do some real damage down in Tampa Bay. The Rays are expected to use him as their primary starting designated hitter.
Fri Jan 21 201120:13Report: Rays sign Manny, Damon to 1-yr deals
SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Rays have signed both Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon to a one-year deals.
Damon will receive $5.25 million, plus a possible $750,000 more in attendance bonuses. That's a little more than we'd want to pay him, but the Rays more than made up for it by only having to give Manny $2 million. Damon will handle left field, which will likely result in Desmond Jennings getting more seasoning at Triple-A. Manny will be used as the primary DH. Dan Johnson appears ticketed for the first base job unless the Rays make another move.

Fri Jan 21 201114:02Rays may add both Damon and Manny
A source told Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com Friday that the Rays may consider adding both Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez.
Reports have the Rays and Damon closing in on a contract. But that deal alone apparently won't satisfy the suddenly free-agent hungry Tampa Bay front office. They would also like to lock up Ramirez and hand most of the starts at designated hitter to him while using Damon as the primary left fielder. The power potential is attractive, as long as the money isn't crazy.

Fri Jan 21 201111:07Rangers pursuing free agent Manny Ramirez
T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com has confirmed that the Rangers are pursuing free agent slugger Manny Ramirez.
The Rangers have committed to giving most of the playing time at DH to Michael Young, but they could always play Young at first base and move Mitch Moreland into more of a bench role. If Manny is motivated, he could do some real damage at the Ballpark in Arlington. On an incentive-laden one-year contract with a low base salary, he is certainly worth the risk.

Fri Jan 21 201106:21Ramirez likely to sign by start of next week
ESPN Deportes is reporting that Manny Ramirez is likely to sign somewhere by the beginning of next week.
Ramirez is garnering the most interest from the Angels, Blue Jays, Rangers, and Rays. The Twins presumably are no longer interested after signing Jim Thome. ESPN Deportes writes that the 38-year-old "wants to show the world he's still got game." Ramirez's playing time and offensive numbers have dropped precipitously in recent years. Keep an eye on where he ends up and what his role will be. If he's given a starting job, he might have enough in the tank to be an everyday fantasy contributor in 2011.

Fri Jan 14 201111:16Report: Five teams interested in DH Ramirez
The Angels, Twins, Rangers, Rays, and Blue Jays are among "at least five teams" to express interest in free agent Manny Ramirez, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes.
Ramirez has been training in Arizona and wants to show that his usage as a designated hitter can still be augmented with sporadic left field work. Man-Ram will likely have to wait until Jim Thome, a DH currently ahead of him in the pecking order, makes a decision. Thome is deciding between the Twins and Rangers. Once he chooses, Man-Ram will be down a suitor but will ostensibly move with Vladimir Guerrero to the front of the DH line. Ramirez hit .298/.409/.460 in 2010 and is probably looking for a contract with a low base-salary that could balloon with incentives.

Thu Jan 6 201110:38Report: Rays interested in Manny Ramirez?
Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes was told that the Rays have shown some interest in Manny Ramirez.
Rojas was told this information by two members of Ramirez's "inner circle," so this might not mean a whole lot. Even Rojas suggests that it could be unfounded. However, assuming that Ramirez is willing to accept a one-year deal with a low-base salary and some performance-based incentives, he would be a pretty intriguing gamble for a club like the Rays.

Sun Dec 26 201009:20Report: Yankees not interested in Manny
The New York Post's George A. King III reports that the Yankees do not have interest in Manny Ramirez.
The previous report that they had been discussing the possibility of adding him never really made sense. With Jorge Posada slated for full-time DH duty, Man-Ram would be in line for few little playing time. We've heard very little about Manny this offseason, and it's anyone's guess as to where he might end up.

Thu Dec 23 201020:39Yanks talking internally about Manny Ramirez
According to Jack Curry of the YES Network, the Yankees have had internal discussions about free agent Manny Ramirez.
The Yanks are looking for a right-handed bat to add to their bench, but Curry suspects that a deal with Man-Ram is unlikely. He's a poor defensive outfielder and probably won't be a very happy camper if given only limited playing time. At the moment, the Yankees have committed the DH position to Jorge Posada and left field to Brett Gardner. There simply aren't enough at-bats to go around. Manny is also drawing interest from Tampa Bay.

Sun Dec 12 201009:57Report: Rays interested in Manny
The St. Petersburg Times' Marc Topkin writes that the Rays are "being connected" to Hideki Matsui, Jason Giambi and Manny Ramirez.
The Rays were interested in dealing for Manny at the trade deadline and he would be a nice addition on a one-year deal as the team tries to soften the blow of losing both Carl Crawford and Carlos Pena. Topkin says that the Rays are likely to "wait for reduced prices on the leftovers," so any signing might not coming until January. Matsui might have signed with the A's by then.

Wed Dec 8 201014:18Manny looking for a one-year deal
Scott Boras said Wednesday that Manny Ramirez is looking for a one-year contract.
We haven't heard much about Ramirez this winter, but at least Boras is being realistic here. The 38-year-old Ramirez could still help any number of teams as a designated hitter, but he'll have to compete with the likes of Vladimir Guerrero and Jim Thome for his next contract.

Sat Nov 27 201011:19Could Manny decide not to play in 2011?
An NL talent evaluator told ESPN's Buster Olney that he wouldn't be surprised if Manny Ramirez decides not to play in 2011 if he doesn't get a deal he likes.
The same evaluator also said he "could see him getting $2-3 million base with incentives that could earn him between $5-10 million." Olney sought opinions from a variety of scouts, talent evaluators, GMs and executives, and the general consensus is that Manny is now strictly a DH that can hit for average but that he now struggles with good fastballs and there's not much power there anymore. Sounds about right.

Fri Nov 26 201008:56Might the Jays make a run at Manny Ramirez?
Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos did not rule out a run at free agent Manny Ramirez when talking with reporters this week.
Anthopoulos noted that he wouldn't be scared off by a player's past reputation. "You have to weigh each case by itself," he said. "If it's the right player, the right fit, the right talent at the right price, you've got to be open to it." That doesn't necessarily mean that the Blue Jays are going to begin talks with Manny, but the aging slugger is not drawing much interest this winter and Toronto is not a terrible fit. Ramirez hit .298/.409/.460 in 2010.
