LHP Robbie Erlin underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on Tuesday. The loss of Erlin put stress on the rotation, especially with RHP Tyson Ross, the opening-day starter, going on the DL after his first outing. Erlin was an off-speed pitcher, which gave the Padres balance to their power arms. Erlin has had previous problems with his elbow but was able to rehab through the other injuries.

LHP Robbie Erlin will undergo Tommy John surgery on his left elbow sometime next week, manager Andy Green confirmed Thursday. Erlin has been sidelined since April 21 with what was called a left elbow strain but an MRI revealed a significant tear that would require the season-ending surgery. Erlin began the season with Triple-A El Paso and was called up to replace Tyson Ross, going 1-2 with a 4.02 ERA in three games (two starts).

LHP Robbie Erlin will miss the rest of the season as he will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his elbow. An MRI showed a significant tear and that rest and rehabilitation would no longer be an option. "He tried to pitch through it,'' manager Andy Green said. "But he has to have the surgery.'' Erlin faces an approximate 14-month healing period.

LHP Robbie Erlin entered Sunday's game with a 0.93 ERA after his first two outings. However, gave up six runs on eight hits, including three homers, in six innings against the Diamondbacks to see his ERA shoot up to 4.02. Erlin probably pitched an inning or two longer than expected to save the bullpen, which worked eight innings in Saturday night's marathon.

LHP Robbie Erlin was a tough-luck loser in his first start of the season Tuesday night, going six innings against the Phillies and allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking two. Manager Andy Green called him "very efficient" and said Erlin's changeup was particularly effective. The only run he allowed came across on a two-out RBI triple by Odubel Herrera in the sixth. "I tried to locate my fastball and work off that," Erlin said. "I just tried to keep my mind on hitting the glove."

LHP Robbie Erlin will make his first start of the season Tuesday, having previously worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory last Friday in Colorado, after his recall from Triple-A El Paso earlier in the day. Erlin spent most of last season with El Paso, going 7-6 with a 5.60 ERA in 24 starts before going 1-2 with a 4.76 ERA in three September starts with San Diego. He was optioned to Triple-A after going 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA in four spring training starts.

LHP Robbie Erlin will join the rotation and start Tuesday at Philadelphia. He was the winning pitcher on Friday when he held the Rockies to one hit in 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Colin Rea and threw 41 pitches. Manager Andy Green said part of the reason Erlin was lifted from the game at that point was because of the possibility that Tyson Ross (right shoulder inflammation) would be placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, opening up a spot in the rotation. After his 41 pitches, Erlin will face the Phillies on three days of rest. "It's like a heavy bullpen," manager Andy Green said. "So he's got enough time to recover and make his next start."

LHP Robbie Erlin was recalled from Triple-A El Paso, taking the roster spot of LHP Matt Thornton (left Achilles tendinitis), who was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Erlin relieved starter Colin Rea, gave up one hit in 3 2/3 scoreless innings and retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced, including the final 10. It was his fifth career relief appearance and the longest of his career. His previous longest relief outing was two innings on Sept. 7, 2014. Padres manager Andy Green said of Green's outing against the Rockies, "It was huge to get that to shut them down. It's a tough place to shut people down." Erlin went 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA in four Cactus League starts with nine strikeouts and three walks in 12 innings. He spent most of the 2015 season with El Paso, going 7-6 with a 5.60 ERA in 24 starts before going 1-2 with a 4.76 ERA in three starts for the Padres in September. Before the game, Green said, "Robbie's a really versatile piece -- can start, can pitch long relief, can pitch out of the bullpen, can match up. I think in time you'll probably see him do those things. ... I think Robbie's long-term value is as a starter. He could be in that role sooner rather than later, but we'll wait to see how that plays out."

Erlin (1-2) was an unlucky loser on Saturday, as he allowed two runs on five hits across seven innings while striking out four in a loss to the Dodgers.
It took Erlin just 86 pitches to get through his seven innings, so it could've been even better. Erlin got his first start in Colorado and allowed seven runs, but in his last two starts he's been great. In that two-game span. Erlin has gone 14 innings, while allowing just two runs on seven hits. He is making a nice case to stay in the rotation next season, but that won't be decided until next March at the earliest.

Erlin (1-1) was fantastic on Saturday, going seven scoreless innings while allowing two hits and a walk in a 3-0 win over Arizona. He struck out four.
This was easily Erlin's best start of the season and possibly his career. His only other start this season was a seven-run disaster at Coors Field, but that can be written off because of the crazy ballpark. In his other two stints in the majors, Erlin has had a career FIP below of 3.73, so it may be a case of bad luck for the lefty, as his career ERA is just shy of 5.00. He'll look to make one final impression on the Padres to see if he can crack next year's rotation when he travels to LA to take on the Dodgers next Saturday.
