According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants have made a contract offer to Edgar Renteria.
The Giants would like the World Series MVP to return in a utility infielder role and have reportedly offered him a deal close to the $1 million contract they recently gave Pat Burrell. Renteria, 35, batted .276/.332/.374 with three home runs and 22 RBI over 243 at-bats this past season.

According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants are currently in the market for backup shortstops.
The Giants recently signed Miguel Tejada, but they would wise to secure a backup for the 36-year-old. With that in mind, Shea writes that the club is considering Edgar Renteria, Orlando Cabrera and Ramon Santiago.

Thu Dec 2 201020:57Giants optimistic about re-signing Renteria
Giants GM Brian Sabean sounded optimistic Thursday about the possibility of Edgar Renteria returning to San Francisco for another season.
Renteria announced in early November that he plans to continue his playing career and he should begin fielding offers shortly. The 35-year-old can no longer serve as an everyday shortstop, but he would fit on several teams as a utility infielder. He hit .276/.332/.374 this past season.

Fri Nov 12 201017:49Renteria wants to retire a Cardinal or Marlin
Edgar Renteria would like to retire as a Cardinal or Marlin.
Renteria's first nine big league seasons came in Florida and St. Louis and he of course made it to the World Series with both teams. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was apparently one of the ones to talk Renteria into continuing his playing career, and with St. Louis looking for middle infield help, he could be a fit there as a backup and spot starter at both shortstop and second base. But despite his World Series heroics, Renteria's days as a fantasy option are over.

Mon Nov 8 201019:47Report: Renteria open to move to second base
According to Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes.com, Edgar Renteria is willing to move to second base.
Renteria announced over the weekend that he plans to continue to playing next season. The 35-year-old believes that second base could be an option if it would help extend his career. He continues to be average or better defensively at shortstop, but second base is a less demanding position. It also makes the free agent more marketable.

Sat Nov 6 201021:09Renteria to play in 2011
Free agent Edgar Renteria, who weighed retirement during an injury-plagued season, said Saturday that he will return to play in 2011.
"I'm staying, I feel that I still have a lot of baseball in my body," Renteria told ESPNdeportes.com. Remteria played well enough when healthy last season to warrant another shot at a starting gig at shortstop. Still, even after his excellent postseason run, he's likely on his last legs.

Thu Nov 4 201020:36Giants decline Renteria's $10.5M option
Giants declined SS Edgar Renteria's $10.5 million option for 2011.
A no-brainer move for the Giants. Renteria played the hero this year in San Francisco's World Series run, but he played only 72 games during the regular season and is thought to be considering retirement. If the shortstop does call it quits, he will finish with 2,252 hits.

Mon Nov 1 201022:37Giants win first World Series title since '54
Edgar Renteria slugged a go-ahead three run homer as the Giants finished off the Rangers in five games in the World Series.
The Giants have won their first World Series title since 1954 and their first since moving to San Francisco in 1958. The game was scoreless all the way until the top of the seventh inning, when Renteria connected for a three-run shot off Cliff Lee. Shades of his first postseason heroics in 1997 against the Indians. If Renteria truly plans to retire, it's hard to imagine a better way to go out.
Thu Oct 28 201023:15Renteria drives in three, Giants win Game 2
Edgar Renteria finished 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI as the Giants topped the Rangers in Game 2 of the World Series Thursday night.
The 35-year-old shortstop is still getting it done. Renteria delivered the game's first run with a solo shot in the fifth inning that would have ensured a victory on its own. Giants starter Matt Cain turned in a brilliant performance and the San Francisco defense played brilliantly. The club now boasts a 2-0 lead over the Rangers in the seven-game Fall Classic.

The San Jose Mercury News' Andrew Baggarly predicts that manager Bruce Bochy will go with Juan Uribe at third base and Edgar Renteria at shortstop in Game 6 of the NLCS.
The Giants have had a revolving door at the two positions in the playoffs, with Pablo Sandoval and Mike Fontenot also getting playing time. Renteria is playing with a completely torn left biceps tendon.

Tue Oct 19 201009:36Renteria (biceps) expected to play through
Edgar Renteria is expected to play shortstop in Game 3 of the NLCS Tuesday despite a completely torn left biceps tendon.
Renteria suffered the injury in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Braves. "It hurt, but (a game is) only three hours," the veteran shortstop said Monday. "You have to play and focus." Juan Uribe would normally replace an injured Renteria, but he is dealing with a left wrist ailment of his own.

Fri Sep 24 201009:58Edgar Renteria considering retirement
Edgar Renteria told Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle that he is considering retirement.
"I feel good," said Renteria. "My mind is good, but sometimes the body says, 'No,' because I've had a lot of injuries this year." Limited to just 71 games this season due to injuries to his elbow, biceps, groin and hamstring, the 35-year-old Renteria is batting .279/.336/.379 with three home runs and 22 RBI. He is currently in the final year of a two-year, $18.5 million contract. His contract includes a $10.5 million club option for next season or a $500,000 buyout. Whether he ultimately decides to retire or not, it's safe to say the Giants will be more than happy to say goodbye.

Wed Sep 1 201015:52Renteria back from disabled list
Giants activated SS Edgar Renteria from the 15-day disabled list.
Renteria has been out since August 11 with a left biceps strain. He is not totally recovered from the injury, so expect his playing time to be limited, at least initially. He should probably be a bench player right now, anyway.
Mon Aug 30 201012:34Renteria could return to Giants on Wednesday
Edgar Renteria (biceps) could return from the disabled list when big league rosters expand Wednesday.
Renteria is not totally recovered from a left biceps strain but he wouldn't play on an everyday basis anyway because of the positive production that the Giants are getting from Juan Uribe. Renteria, 35, was batting .278/.342/.364 with two homers in 209 at-bats before his biceps injury.

Wed Aug 11 201019:35Giants place Renteria (oblique) on 15-day DL
Giants placed SS Edgar Renteria on the 15-day disabled list with a left biceps strain.
Renteria underwent an MRI on Wednesday that revealed the strain. He told reporters that he's aiming to return in September to aid the Giants' playoff push, but this is his third stint on the disabled list this year and it's hard to guess whether he will accomplish that goal. The 35-year-old is batting .278/.342/.364 with two homers and 21 RBI in 209 at-bats this season. Juan Uribe should start at shortstop for the Giants almost every single night.
