Tue May 21 2013 | 18:28 | Jake Westbrook doesn't throw off mound |
Jake Westbrook (elbow) didn't throw off a mound Tuesday as hoped. |
Westbrook threw for about 15 minutes on flat ground instead. The fact that he did throw indicates that it's probably not really a setback as much as the Cardinals just decided to wait a bit longer before having him throw from the bump. Westbrook is expected to miss at least a couple more starts. |

Mon May 20 2013 | 22:06 | Westbrook (elbow) to throw off mound Tuesday |
Jake Westbrook (elbow) plans to resume throwing from a mound on Tuesday. |
It comes after he made 25 flat-ground throws from 60 feet on Sunday and 50 throws from 90 feet on Monday. Westbrook seems likely to need a rehab start or two before returning, but there's no word on when that might take place. He'll likely be back in early June if he can avoid a setback. |

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Jake Westbrook (elbow) "should be ready" after two missed starts. |
"He's going to miss two starts, should be ready to go after that," Mozeliak said. "We don't think it's that big of a deal. It's just something that we didn't want to push it and didn't want it to become a big deal." Westbrook, who has been diagnosed with right elbow inflammation, has been given an injection in hopes of speeding along the healing process. John Gast will take his spot in the rotation. |

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told 101.1 ESPN's Brian Stull that Jake Westbrook's elbow injury isn't a big deal. |
Westbrook has had Tommy John surgery before, but Stull said Mozeliak was "emphatic" that the righty's current ailment isn't a Tommy John situation. The right-hander has been given an injection in his elbow in hopes of speeding along the healing process. John Gast is taking Westbrook's spot in the rotation starting Tuesday. |

Wed May 8 2013 | 17:28 | Jake Westbrook gives up four runs to Cubs |
Jake Westbrook yielded four runs -- three earned -- in 5 1/3 innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Cubs. |
Westbrook allowed nine hits and struck out just one today. He still hasn't given up a homer in six starts this season, which explains much of the 1.62 ERA. Of course, that number will keep rising, but with two home starts against the Mets and Brewers next week, he still looks like a decent play in all formats. |

Sat Apr 27 2013 | 20:02 | Westbrook goes six scoreless in no-decision |
Jake Westbrook tossed six scoreless innings but was left with a no-decision Saturday against the Pirates. |
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny curiously decided to pull Westbrook after just 91 pitches. And reliever Joe Kelly lost the 2-0 St. Louis lead in the very next frame. Westbrook owns an outstanding 0.98 ERA in 27 2/3 innings this season but he's prone to blowups and isn't a great fantasy option outside of NL-only leagues. |

Jake Westbrook allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings of work in his start Sunday against the Phillies. |
Westbrook was solid for the most part, but was fortunate to end up with the no-decision. He didn't have great command of his sinker and gave up four walks. In three starts this season, Westbrook has a 1.25 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. Continue to view him as a streaming option in deeper mixed leagues. |

Tuesday's game between the Cardinals and Pirates has been postponed due to rain. |
The Pirates were up 4-2 after two innings, but the skies opened up and the rain appears to have no end in sight. A makeup date for the game has not been announced. Starters Jake Westbrook and Jonathan Sanchez presumably will just be pushed back until Sunday. |

Wed Apr 10 2013 | 16:41 | Jake Westbrook pitches shutout |
Jake Westbrook recorded his first shutout since 2006 in Wednesday's 10-0 win over the Reds. |
It was Westbrooks's 4th career shutout and 15th complete game. He allowed five hits, walked four and struck out three. 16 of his outs came on the ground. It's rather odd that Westbrook has issued 10 walks already, but since he's yet to give up an earned run, we doubt anyone is complaining. We don't suggest racing out to pick up Westbrook in mixed leagues. |

Sun Oct 14 2012 | 09:03 | Jake Westbrook won't be added to roster |
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Jake Westbrook (oblique) represents "good insurance," but the team will "keep the roster the same for now." |
Westbrook threw a full-effort bullpen session at home in Georgia this past week while he was home for the birth of his fourth child, and he had another session Saturday in San Francisco after rejoining the team. While the Cards don't plan on adding him to the roster at this time, Westbrook could be an option should they make it to the World Series, possibly replacing Shelby Miller as the long man in the bullpen. The veteran righty hasn't appeared in a game since straining his oblique during a September 8 start. |
