Fri Aug 5 2011 | 23:36 | Giavotella shines in major-league debut |
Johnny Giavotella went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and stolen base in his major-league debut on Friday, a Royals loss to the Tigers. |
Making his debut the same night as the far more heralded Brett Lawrie, Giavotella had a slightly better game. Slated to see the lion's share of the time at second base for the Royals going forward, Giavotella is worth a flier for anyone looking for answers in the middle infield. |

Fri Aug 5 2011 | 08:18 | Johnny Giavotella called up |
Royals purchased the contract of 2B Johnny Giavotella from Triple-A Omaha. |
Giavotella was having a nice year at Omaha, batting .339/.391/.481 with nine homers and 72 RBI. Ranked by Baseball America coming into the season as the No. 18 prospect in a loaded system, Giavotella will be carried by his bat, as his glove is his weak link. He's definitely worth a look in AL-only leagues and also in deeper mixed formats for those in need of middle infield help. Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star hears that he'll play "about five times a week throughout the rest of the season," meaning Chris Getz is headed for the bench. |

Tue Mar 8 2011 | 17:38 | Royals send three minor league camp |
Royals reassigned 2B Johnny Giavotella, RHP Gaby Hernandez and C Ryan Eigsti to minor league camp |
As per usual with most early cuts, there are no big surprises here. Giavotella, a former 2008 second-round pick, batted .322/.395/.460 with nine home runs and 65 RBI with Double-A Northwest Arkansas last season. The 23-year-old was ranked as the organization's No. 17 prospect by Baseball America over the winter. If he can stick at second base, he has a chance to be a useful player. |
