Nava, 32, hit a combined .194/.315/.245 with one homer and 10 RBIs in 60 games for Boston and Tampa Bay this year.

The Rays claimed Nava off waivers earlier in the week, and the veteran utility man will immediately join the lineup as the starting right fielder. Friday, he'll have the tough task of facing the highly talented Jacob deGrom in his first game as a member of the Rays.

Nava was claimed off waivers by the Rays on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.

Nava was placed on waivers last Thursday following the team's recall of Jonathan Aro. Given his .152/.260/.182 slash line this season, it's not a huge surprise. However, the Rays may decide to give him another chance, but the 32-year-old outfielder doesn't provide much future prospects at this point in his career.

Nava will be removed from the 40-man roster, and the Red Sox will call up Jonathan Aro to take his place on the 25-man team. Nava has struggled mightily in 66 at-bats for the Red Sox this season, hitting just .152 with seven RBI and 17 strikeouts. He'll likely land at Triple-A Pawtucket, where he's played 10 games in 2015.

Nava (thumb) was activated from the disabled list Tuesday, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.

It was unclear whether the Red Sox would activate Nava at the end of his rehab assignment, as he struggled at the plate earlier this season. He could make some starts against right-handed pitchers, especially if the Red Sox are comfortable using him at first base, where Mike Napoli has struggled all year. Deven Marrero was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket for the corresponding transaction.

Nava's rehabilitation assignment is set to end this coming Wednesday, the Boston Globe reports. He has been on the disabled list because of a sprained thumb since May 28.

Nava has appeared in eight games for Triple-A Pawtucket while on rehab, going 9-for-28 with two extra-base hits and eight RBI. It's unclear how the Red Sox will proceed when Nava's 20-day assignment is over, but we suspect he won't be activated to the major league roster.
