Martinez threw 69 pitches and allowed just one run over 4.2 innings in a "B" game Friday.

Martinez has pitched well this spring as he competes for one of two available rotation spots in the seaosn-opening rotation.

Martinez struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings in his second spring appearance Friday, the team's web site reports.

Included in the strong effort was Martinez striking out the side in the second inning. Martinez made 24 starts with Texas last year, but he's not considered a front runner for one of the two open spots in the rotation despite last year's usage.

Martinez will compete for the Rangers' fifth starter job this spring, the team's official site reports.

Ross Detwiler is the favorite to win the job, but Martinez and Nick Tepesch will be a part of the mix this spring. Martinez could wind up serving the Rangers in a swing role, the position formerly held by Scott Baker.

Martinez stymied the Yankees, limiting them to only three hits and a walk while striking out three. He left with one out in the sixth, and 67 pitches, after walking Brett Gardner. Martinez's stats aren't pretty, as he owns a 4.73 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and 32/32 K/BB ratio. He'll try to improve them all when he takes on the Athletics at home on Sunday.

It's lefties that had killed Martinez, so facing the Angels righty heavy lineup wasn't such a bad matchup for him. He's now turned in back-to-back quality starts after ugly outings against the Orioles and Indians to begin June, but he's now gone nine major league starts without ever striking out more than three batters. We're not optimistic.
