RHP Nick Martinez (1-1, 5.14) is making a spot start Friday in the series opener against Boston. It'll be his second start and fourth appearance of the season. Martinez, 25, made his first start of the year on June 18 at St. Louis, also a spot start in the slot vacated by RHP Yu Darvish. Martinez took a no-decision in the Rangers' 4-3 come-from-behind win after going 4 1/3 innings and allowing three earned runs.

It's unclear what his role will be with the team moving forward, however his limited success this season --- he's posting a 4.09 ERA and 1.45 WHIP with a 73:44 K:B in 121 innings --- suggests that he won't be involved in many high-stress innings as the Rangers try to hold onto their playoff chances.

After giving up seven runs in 3.2 innings in Wednesday's start, Martinez was booted from the Rangers' rotation. With Chi Chi Gonzalez making the start Thursday and Cole Hamels (groin) expected to make his next start, there does not appear to be an obvious way for Martinez to get another start for the Rangers anytime soon.

Martinez (7-7) lasted only 3.2 innings, surrendering seven runs -- four earned -- on 11 hits while striking out four against the Twins on Wednesday.

After back-to-back wins, Martinez pitched a season worst 3.2 innings and gave up a season high 11 hits and three home runs. His ERA has more than doubled since May 28, going from 2.03 to 4.09, and he'll look to bounce back in his next scheduled start Monday against the Mariners.

Martinez (7-6) allowed one hit, one run and three walks while striking out one in five innings of action against the Astros on Wednesday.

On his 25th birthday, Martinez dominated the Astros, allowing only one hit over five innings. The righty has now won two in a row after a stretch in which he dropped four straight decisions. Both wins came at home, where the Rangers are 7-1 in their last eight games. Martinez will look to make it three wins in a row in his next scheduled start Wednesday at Minnesota.

Martinez (6-6) earned the win Friday night, striking out four while allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over 6.1 innings against the Giants.

Friday was Martinez's first quality start in over a month and his first win since June 9. After an incredible April in which he gave up a single run over four starts, little has gone right for Martinez. His ERA has more than doubled since Memorial Day - from 1.96 to 4.01. Martinez offers little in the way of strikeout totals so, while Friday may help spark a turnaround, it's too early to put your faith in him.

Martinez endured his sixth loss of the season Sunday against the Angels, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out five.

The right-hander allowed a pair of early solo homers before running into trouble in the sixth inning, when the Angels ultimately scored five runs to break the game open. Martinez had a 2.77 ERA as recently as late June, but that number has risen to 4.03 after a string of poor starts sandwiching a stint in the minor leagues. He is expected to stick in the starting rotation for the time being and is next scheduled to start Friday against the Giants.

Martinez served up seven runs on seven hits over four innings in a no decision Monday against Colorado.

Martinez has now allowed seven runs or more in three of his past seven starts and has watched his ERA inflate from 2.89 to 3.92 in that span. Martinez owns a brutal 4.76 FIP and his ERA will keep trending in that direction as long as he struggles to record strikeouts like he did on Monday (just two against 22 batters).

Martinez has been recalled from Triple-A Round Rock and will start Monday's game against the Rockies, Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

It appears as though Martinez will assume the rotation spot of Wandy Rodriguez, who the Rangers are looking to deal prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. Martinez was one of the Rangers' top-performing starters in the first half with a 3.43 ERA and 1.37 WHIP, but his weak peripheral statistics eventually caught up to him in his most recent three starts with the parent club. It's a dicey proposition to expect strong results from Martinez in his return to the rotation, especially when he's making the start at a hitter's haven like Coors Field.

Martinez is expected to return to the majors after the All-Star break, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Martinez will see a reduced workload during his brief time at Triple-A Round Rock, but all signs point to him being part of the rotation when the second half begins.
