Callaspo is batting just .115 (3-for-26) with no walks and one RBI through nine spring games. |
Callaspo arrived to camp clearly out of condition, sparking concern among Braves officials regarding the team's second base situation, and the 31-year-old has done little to ease those concerns in spring games. Meanwhile, trade acquisition Jace Peterson has impressed thus far and may have the leg up in the competition for playing time at the keystone as of now. That said, Callaspo's $3 million contract he signed in the offseason is guaranteed, so he figures to at least open the year in a utility role. |

Callaspo is expected to see significant playing time at third base during spring training, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. |
It sounds like manager Fredi Gonzalez is kicking around the idea of having Callaspo and Chris Johnson share time at the hot corner, which could open up playing time at the keystone for Phil Gosselin, Kelly Johnson and/or Jace Peterson. Gonzalez did not rule Callaspo out of the mix at second base, but this new uncertainty surrounding his playing time pretty much eliminates any appeal Callaspo had in deeper NL-only leagues for now. Regardless of who opens the year at second, there's a good chance they'll be supplanted by Jose Peraza at some point. |
Tue Dec 9 2014 | 13:16 | Callaspo has agreed to deal with Braves |
Callaspo has agreed to a deal with the Braves, pending a physical, MLB Network Radio reports. |
Coming off of a very disappointing 2014 campaign with the A's, Callaspo will offer the Braves depth around the infield -- particularly at second base, where a combination of Phil Gosselin and Jose Peraza were previously positioned to handle the bulk of the playing time. As the roster is presently constructed, Callaspo may emerge to be the Braves' starting second baseman on Opening Day, but his hold on that job would likely be tenuous. |

Callaspo is in a 1-for-27 slump at the plate over the past seven games, and will take a seat Monday with the return of Jed Lowrie to short and Eric Sogard shifting to second base. His playing time may be limited in September with Lowrie's return, as now he and Sogard will likely split the duties at second base. |
Mon Aug 11 2014 | 17:00 | Callaspo out of lineup Monday |
Callaspo is out of the lineup Monday vs. the Royals, MLB.com's Jane Lee reports. |
Callaspo probably tops the depth chart at second base in Oakland, but he's still stuck with Eric Sogard in what mostly amounts to a timeshare at the position. The 31-year-old probably has a more impressive offensive track record than Sogard, but his .231/.302/.297 batting line on the season doesn't really confer him an advantage. |

Sun Jun 29 2014 | 11:22 | Alberto Callaspo is Oakland's primary 2B |
Athletics manager Bob Melvin confirmed on Saturday that Alberto Callaspo has taken over as the team's primary second baseman. |
Callaspo has seized the job with a .390/.435/.439 batting line over his last 11 games. "He's made his own opportunities," Melvin said of Callaspo. "He's swung the bat better, his defense looks a lot better. A guy who played some middle infield almost exclusively early in his career seems like he's getting acclimated to it again after playing third base for a number of years. ... Based on the fact he's had really good at-bats, consistent at-bats, he's warranted the at-bats he's getting right now." |
