Sun Aug 12 2012 | 08:46 | Bethancourt suffers season-ending injury |
Braves catching prospect Christian Bethancourt broke the fifth metacarpal in his left hand when he was struck by a pitch in Thursday's game with Double-A Mississippi. |
It's an injury that will prematurely end what has been a disappointing season. One of the top catcher prospects in the game, Bethancourt also missed more than a month with a hamstring injury earlier this season and wound up hitting just .243/.275/.291 with two homers for Mississippi. He'll likely return there in 2013. |

Fri Apr 13 2012 | 11:25 | Rays following Bethancourt 'diligently' |
According to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark, the Rays have followed Braves catching prospect Christian Bethancourt "diligently." |
The Rays have perhaps the league's worst catching duo in Jose Molina and Jose Lobaton, but Bethancourt would be a long-term answer at backstop, not a short-term solution. He's taken just 29 at-bats above High-A, all of which have come this season. There have been no indications the Braves are actively shopping their possible heir apparent to Brian McCann. |

Thu Oct 27 2011 | 14:19 | Bethancourt (hand) day-to-day in AFL |
Braves prospect catcher Christian Bethancourt is day-to-day after being hit in the hand by a pitch Wednesday while playing in the Arizona Fall League. |
X-rays on the hand came back negative, so it shouldn't be a lingering issue. Bethancourt, 20, batted .289/.304/.385 with five home runs, 53 RBI and a .689 OPS over 410 plate appearances this season between Class A Rome and High-A Lynchburg. He has garnered plenty of hype as a prospect and is highly-regarded defensively, but his plate discipline obviously needs some work. |
