Thu Jun 21 2012 | 15:40 | Don Kelly leaves with knee contusion |
Don Kelly has been diagnosed with a knee contusion. |
Kelly suffered the injury while making a catch along the right field foul line in Thursday's game against the Cardinals. He's being called "day-to-day," and seems likely to avoid a stint on the 15-day disabled list. |

Tue Jan 17 2012 | 10:54 | Tigers avoid arbitration with Don Kelly |
The Tigers and OF Don Kelly avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $900,000 contract. |
Kelly batted .245/.291/.381 with seven home runs and 28 RBI in 113 games last season while earning close to the league minimum. He'll act as a utilityman in 2012. |

Thu Oct 6 2011 | 23:49 | Don Kelly belts solo shot |
Don Kelly ripped a solo homer in Thursday's Game 5 ALCS win over the Yankees. |
He got things started with the solo blast as the second batter of the game, and Delmon Young followed him up with a homer on the next pitch to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead. With Wilson Betemit struggling and Kelly picking up four hits in 11 at-bats against the Yankees, he's likely earned more time at the hot corner in the ALCS. |

Thu Oct 6 2011 | 14:45 | Don Kelly starts at third base in Game 5 |
Don Kelly will make the start at third base for Game 5 of the NLDS against the Yankees on Thursday night. |
He'll bat second against right-hander Ivan Nova, which is an interesting choice by Tigers manager Jim Leyland given his .285 career on-base percentage. Meanwhile, Magglio Ordonez will start in right field while Ramon Santiago plays second base. Ryan Raburn and Wilson Betemit are on the bench. |

Don Kelly will start at third base in Game 5 of the ALDS against the Yankees on Thursday. |
Kelly played right field in Game 4, but will make the start at the hot corner Thursday in place of the struggling Wilson Betemit. Magglio Ordonez, who was on the bench for Game 4, will be back in right field for the deciding game of the series. |

Tue Oct 4 2011 | 19:03 | Kelly, Betemit are in Game 4 lineup vs. NYY |
Don Kelly is in Tuesday's Game 4 lineup against the Yankees. |
He replaces Magglio Ordonez, batting sixth and playing right field. Mags is 3-for-8 with a walk in the series and hit .365 between August 12 and the end of the regular season. The left-handed hitting Kelly is 0-for-2 with a sacrifice and a hit by pitch against Yankees starter A.J. Burnett in his career. The only other lineup change from Game 3 on either side is Wilson Betemit starting over Brandon Inge at third base for Detroit. |

Thu Jun 30 2011 | 02:08 | OF Don Kelly pitches to one batter in blowout |
After normally reliable David Purcey was tagged for four runs in an inning of work, Tigers manager Jim Leyland tapped outfielder Don Kelly to pitch in relief. |
Kelly had not pitched since college, but still managed to go 2-2 on Mets hitter Scott Hairston before inducing him into a harmless fly out to center field. His fastball was clocked at a solid 86 MPH. Although we don't anticipate seeing him on the mound again, Kelly can take pride in being the only Tigers pitcher (out of eight) in the first two games of their series to keep the Mets hitless. |

Wed Jun 8 2011 | 23:31 | Don Kelly hits first homer, but Tigers lose |
Don Kelly hit a solo home run in the first inning of Detroit's 7-3 loss to the Rangers on Wednesday. |
Kelly's bomb was his first of the season, and would be the only run Alexi Ogando allowed in seven innings of work. He later added another RBI with a ninth-inning groundout. Now batting .241 with five RBI through 79 at-bats, Kelly can be safely ignored in all formats. |

Wed May 25 2011 | 14:43 | Kelly starts at third again Wednesday |
Don Kelly started at third base for the second straight day Wednesday. |
Brandon Inge isn't hurt, but Tigers manager Jim Leyland is trying to find a way to generate some more offense. While there's nothing to suggest that Inge has lost his job, keep in mind that he's batting just .208 with one home run on the season and .190 (23-for-121) over his last 38 games. |

Tue Mar 8 2011 | 19:36 | Don Kelly to make Tigers' roster |
Tigers manager Jim Leyland confirmed Tuesday that Don Kelly will be on the team's Opening Day roster. |
"There's something to be said for guys like Don Kelly," said Leyland. "First of all, he's a better player than people think. He did very well when he got a chance to play a little bit more last year. He got some big hits, played all over. He can play second base, turned two or three nice double plays [Monday against the Mets], made a couple nice plays. He's a real valuable guy. He's really a good fit on our team." Kelly is useful off the bench because he can play both corner infield and outfield positions, but he's unlikely to have any fantasy value. |

Thu Jan 20 2011 | 01:39 | Don Kelly to be considered for #3 catcher |
Manager Jim Leyland is considering using Don Kelly as the team's third catcher and will give him some reps during spring training. |
From a fantasy perspective, versatility is always a plus, as Kelly could start qualifying at catcher in your league at some point during the season. However, Leyland foresees Kelly catching only when Victor Martinez is playing DH and when someone pinch-runs for Alex Avilla in the late innings. The 31-year-old has only 321 career major league at-bats. His fantasy impact will remain limited unless he earns more playing time. |

Mon Sep 6 2010 | 16:16 | Tigers' Kelly homers versus White Sox |
Don Kelly went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and an RBI single Monday against the White Sox. |
We'd call this bad news. After four months of incredible futility, Kelly is hitting .370 with five homers in 54 at-bats since the beginning of August. The surge has made it far more likely that he'll be included in Detroit's plans for 2011. |
Sat Jul 24 2010 | 22:28 | Tigers' Kelly goes hitless in loss |
Don Kelly went 0-for-3 before being removed for a pinch-hitter Saturday versus the Blue Jays. |
The Tigers are truly scraping the bottom of the barrel every time they give Kelly a start. He's been seeing more time since Brandon Inge went down, but he belongs in Triple-A. He's hitting .211 with four extra-base hits and a 22/4 K/BB ratio in 123 at-bats. |
Thu Jun 17 2010 | 16:07 | Tigers' Kelly goes hitless in loss |
On a day in which every other Tigers starter had at least two hits, Don Kelly went 0-for-4 Thursday against the Nationals. |
Kelly is hitting .205 with just two extra-base hits, four RBI and four walks in 73 at-bats. Manager Jim Leyland fell in love with him this spring, but he's quite the waste of a roster spot. Ryan Raburn can play all of Kelly's positions and provide some pop in the process. |
