Fri Jan 27 201218:35Brad Penny drawing interest in Japan
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that Brad Penny is drawing interest from teams in Japan.
Penny was terrible with the Tigers last season, posting a 5.30 ERA to go along with a measly 74/62 K/BB ratio over 181 2/3 innings. The 33-year-old right-hander would almost certainly have to accept a minor league deal in order to continue his career stateside, though Crasnick's report would seem to indicate that MLB teams aren't knocking on his door.

Tue Nov 1 201115:16Tigers not interested in re-signing Penny
Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski indicated Tuesday that he has no interest in re-signing Brad Penny.
Penny posted an ugly 5.30 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 181 2/3 innings this season, striking out just 74 batters while issuing 62 walks. He should be able to find a vacant rotation spot on a non-contending team, but his days of lofty salaries are well over.

Sun Sep 25 201116:26Brad Penny good enough to win
Brad Penny was good enough to win Sunday, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings in a 10-6 victory over the Orioles.
It was a typical Penny performance, as he ran his pitch count up to near 100 in the inefficient outing. He finished the regular season with an 11-11 record and an ugly 5.30 ERA and 1.56 WHIP. Penny will be used as a long man out of the bullpen in the playoffs, assuming he makes the roster at all. He'll be a free agent this offseason and might be to the point where he has to settle for a minor league contract with someone.

Tue Sep 20 201123:44Brad Penny hammered in loss to Royals
Brad Penny was smoked for seven runs over four innings in Tuesday's loss to the Royals.
Penny gave up 10 hits (including two homers) and two walks while striking out just one batter. His ERA jumped to 5.31 in the loss, which is his highest ERA since the end of April. It's hard to see him making the postseason roster at this point.

Wed Sep 14 201117:26Brad Penny gives up five runs, one earned
Brad Penny allowed five runs -- one earned -- in six innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the White Sox.
Penny's own error helped lead to the four unearned runs, so it's not as though someone else spoiled a good outing for him. Barring a sudden turnaround, he's getting left off the Tigers' ALDS roster.

Fri Sep 9 201122:47Brad Penny lousy in win
Brad Penny allowed four runs on five hits and three walks in five innings on Friday, improving to 10-10 in Detroit's 8-4 win over the Twins.
Penny struck out one and walked three in failing to record an out beyond the fifth inning for the third consecutive outing. He'll bring a 5.19 ERA and 1.52 WHIP into his Wednesday start against the White Sox. If Penny continues to show nothing down the stretch, it's possible he could be left off Detroit's ALDS roster.

Sun Aug 28 201117:43Brad Penny has another off day
Brad Penny got shelled by the Twins on Sunday, surrendering seven runs on eight hits in five innings of a Tigers loss in Minnesota.
He struck out five, walked two and allowed a pair of home runs. The dismal start was nothing new for the Tigers right-hander, who is now the owner of a 5.07 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 65/50 K/BB ratio through 156 1/3 innings. That third number could make it difficult for him to land a job next season.

Brad Penny allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in six innings of work on Wednesday, taking a no-decision in Detroit's loss to the Twins.
He struck out three while allowing a pair of home runs. The quality start was Penny's first in five outings. He'll take a 4.97 ERA and 1.48 WHIP into his Tuesday matchup with the Rays.

Thu Jul 28 201117:15Brad Penny tagged for seven runs
Brad Penny was lit up for seven runs in 3 1/3 innings by the Angels in a loss Thursday.
Worse, he picked a fight with catcher Victor Martinez on the field. Martinez certainly isn't known for his defense, but for Penny to take on such a popular player in front of everyone probably won't go over well with his teammates or management. Penny's rotation spot is secure and that probably won't change even if the Tigers pick up a pitcher as hoped, but he's a borderline AL-only starter at the moment.

Sat Jul 23 201119:18Penny takes loss against Twins
Brad Penny yielded four runs over seven innings in a loss to the Twins on Saturday.
Penny was handed his first loss since June 20. He scattered seven hits (including a solo homer by Danny Valencia) while striking out four, walking three and throwing a wild pitch. The veteran right-hander has done a respectable job as a backend starter this season, but the lack of strikeouts (53 over 123 2/3 innings) gives him little value outside of AL-only leagues.

Sun Jun 26 201116:39Penny takes no-decision in win
Brad Penny allowed two runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings on Sunday, taking a no-decision in Detroit's 8-3 win over the Diamondbacks.
Penny struck out two and walked one in going more than six innings for just the second time in seven outings. Through 96 2/3 innings of work, he is now the owner of a 4.66 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 42/31 K/BB ratio.

Tue Jun 21 201101:08Penny out-dueled by Kershaw
Brad Penny held the Dodgers to just two runs on seven hits in six innings of work on Monday, but was no match for Clayton Kershaw in a 4-0 Tigers loss.
Penny struck out four and walked three in just his second quality start in six outings. Now the owner of a 4.80 ERA and 1.43 WHIP through his first 90 innings of work, he'll get the Diamondbacks in Detroit this weekend.

Wed Jun 15 201123:10Penny has shortest night of the season
Brad Penny got knocked out early on Wednesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks in just 3 1/3 innings of Detroit's loss to the Indians.
Penny tallied zero strikeouts in his shortest outing of the season. Now 5-5 with a 4.93 ERA and 1.42 WHIP through 84 innings of work, Penny is little more than a spot-starting option for mixed-league players.

Mon May 30 201116:26Brad Penny gives up five runs to Twins
Brad Penny yielded five runs in six innings Monday in a no-decision versus the Twins.
Penny had his last start rained out after he pitched three scoreless innings. Working on four days' rest, he wasn't sharp in this one, giving up five runs for the second official start in a row. Maybe another start against the White Sox will help. He'll face them Saturday for the second time this season after allowing one hit over seven scoreless innings against then last month.

Fri Apr 29 201103:25Penny so-so in loss
Brad Penny took the loss Thursday against the Mariners, surrendering four runs on nine hits in seven innings.
Penny wasn't all that bad, but against a team with the AL's second worst batting average and slugging percentage, it was a disappointing outing. The Mariners finish the series outscoring the Tigers 24-6. Meanwhile, Penny's ERA ticks down to a still unsettling 6.11.

Sat Apr 23 201119:18Penny allows one hit over seven innings
Brad Penny allowed just one hit over seven shutout innings in an 9-0 win over the White Sox on Saturday.
The only hit given up by Penny was a single by Brent Morel with one out in the top of the sixth inning. Or at least that's how it was scored. It was actually a pretty questionable call from the official scorer given the poor throw from Brandon Inge at third base. Oh well. Penny struck out three, walked two and hit a batter en route to his first win of the season. He's had a slow start with the Tigers, but should be a solid option in AL-only leagues if he stays healthy.

Sat Apr 23 201110:47Leyland thinks Brad Penny will be fine
Tigers manager Jim Leyland isn't concerned about Brad Penny's slow start.
"He's going to be fine," Leyland said. "I think Brad Penny is throwing the ball pretty good. He's made a few mistakes and they've cost him." Leyland's confidence stems from Penny's track record, but the problem is, his track record, albeit a brief one, in the AL isn't good. The right-hander has a 8.44 ERA through four starts.

Sun Apr 17 201119:20Penny lasts just five innings in Oakland
Brad Penny gave up five earned runs over five innings in Sunday's loss to the Tigers.
It's a red flag that Penny can't turn in a quality start against Oakland's weak lineup in their spacious pitcher's park. It's also scary that Penny historically starts off seasons well before fading down the stretch. This year, he is already sporting an 8.44 ERA through four starts. Penny is not an option against the White Sox next time out.

Tue Apr 12 201116:38Tigers' Penny solid in no-decision
Brad Penny turned in a quality start Tuesday, yielding three runs in 6 2/3 innings versus the Rangers.
Penny is still winless on the season, but at least he's getting a little better with each outing. He allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out two while lowering his ERA to 8.27 today.

Thu Apr 7 201122:42Brad Penny struggles again
Brad Penny yielded four runs on six hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings in Thursday's 9-5 loss to the Orioles.
He struck out three on the night and served up home runs to Vladmir Guerrero and Adam Jones. Penny's return to the American League hasn't gone any better than his first go-round thus far, as he's surrendered 12 runs in his first two outings. He'll attempt to rebound next Tuesday at home against the Rangers.
