Sat Apr 2 201119:45Penny shelled for eight runs in loss to Yanks
Brad Penny was rocked for eight earned runs in 4 1/3 innings Saturday against the Yankees.
Penny's American League struggles continue. He walked four, gave up seven hits, and threw only 48 of his 90 pitches for strikes as the Yankees put nine runs on the board before the end of the fifth inning. Penny will try to do better next time out against the Royals.

Sun Mar 27 201117:49Tigers' Penny beats Astros
Brad Penny pitched six innings of two-run ball to defeat the Astros on Sunday.
Penny struggled in his previous two starts, so it's nice to see him finish the spring more like he started it. He'll be worth using in AL-only leagues most weeks, though with the Yankees first on the schedule, those with alternatives could choose to bench him initially.

Tue Mar 22 201117:24Brad Penny knocked around by Mets
Brad Penny surrendered five runs on eight hits and three walks over four innings Tuesday in a 10-4 loss to the Mets.
He punched out three in the effort, with the big blow coming in the form of a Willie Harris grand slam. Penny came into today's outing with a 2.35 ERA over his first four spring starts, so this was certainly a step backwards. He's just getting his work in, though, and most importantly looks to be healthy heading into the season.

Mon Mar 7 201116:06Tigers' Penny fans four in victory
Brad Penny pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out four Monday against the Mets.
Penny has yet to walk a batter while throwing 5 1/3 scoreless innings this spring. He's not going to give the Tigers 200 quality innings this season, but it'd be no surprise to see him get off to a fast start and rack up some wins early.

Sun Feb 27 201115:43Tigers three-hit Blue Jays in 1-0 win
Brad Penny went two innings and combined with six relievers on a three-hitter as the Tigers edged the Blue Jays 1-0 on Sunday.

Tue Jan 11 201110:33Tigers agree to one-year, $3M deal with Penny
According to MLB.com's Jason Beck, the Tigers have agreed to terms with Brad Penny on a one-year, $3 million contract.
The deal also includes another $3 million in performance-based incentives. It should prove to be a nice move for the Tigers, as long as Penny can stay healthy for more than a handful of starts. He registered a quality 3.23 ERA and 35/9 K/BB ratio over nine outings in 2010 for St. Louis and he still owns a strong 4.11 career ERA and 1.34 career WHIP. The 32-year-old righty will be relevant in most mixed leagues this season.

Mon Jan 10 201121:23Olney: Tigers are front-runners for RHP Penny
Buster Olney of ESPN.com hears that the Tigers look like the front-runners for free agent right-hander Brad Penny.
This confirms what many have speculated. Assuming the two sides agree to a deal, Penny would join Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello and Phil Coke in the starting rotation, likely leaving Armando Galarraga the odd man out.

Thu Jan 6 201109:48Tigers still pursuing Brad Penny
According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Tigers are still pursuing free agent right-hander Brad Penny.
The Tigers have already had a pretty successful offseason, but are still looking for alternatives to round out their starting rotation. Penny would be a pretty nice buy-low. The 32-year-old right-hander posted a 3.23 ERA and 35/9 K/BB ratio over his first nine starts with the Cardinals last season before going down with a lat injury in May. If healthy, he would be an upgrade to Armando Galarraga for the final spot in the rotation.

Fri Dec 17 201012:06Tigers showing interest in free agent Penny
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Tigers have expressed interest in free agent right-hander Brad Penny.
Penny posted a strong 3.23 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over nine starts with the Cardinals this past year before a lat muscle injury put him on the shelf for good. He's said to be healed now and is still an effective starter when not on the disabled list. A low-base, high-incentive deal would make sense for the Tigers, who could use another quality starter or two.

Sun Aug 15 201012:27Penny has "below 50% chance" of returning
Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said that Brad Penny has a "below 50% chance" of returning to the team this season.
Manager Tony La Russa had expressed some optimism as recently as last week with Penny, saying that he fully expected the right-hander to pitch again this season. Evidently the team's GM doesn't share the same sort of optimism. If Penny does manage to make it back, he might do so in a relief role.

Sat Aug 7 201012:08Penny nearing return to mound
Manager Tony La Russa said Brad Penny (strained right lat) is "getting close" to returning to a pitching mound.
Penny played catch for several days in succession during the team's last homestand and was "discomfort-free," La Russa said. The right-hander hasn't pitched from a mound since experiencing a setback in his recovery in early July. La Russa insists that he still thinks Penny will pitch again this season.

Mon Aug 2 201020:45Cards expect Penny (lat) to pitch this season
Cardinals manager Tony La Russa expects Brad Penny (strained right lat) to pitch again this season.
"Yeah, he's making noise," said La Russa. "He's feeling pretty good, but he's a lot of steps away. He definitely isn't done for the season, in his mind or in ours." Penny, who has been sidelined since late May due to a strained right lat, has played catch every day for about a week, but the team has yet to schedule a bullpen session.

Fri Jul 16 201009:55No timetable on Penny's return from DL
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak isn't sure when Brad Penny (strained right lat) will be able return from the disabled list.
"I would say that he will pitch again this season, but eight weeks wrong today, it doesn't serve me well to try and guess again," said Mozeliak. Penny suffered a setback when he felt discomfort in the area of his right shoulder during a simulated game last week. The Cardinals clearly can't count on him, so they may have to seek a replacement before the trade deadline.

Wed Jul 7 201020:16Brad Penny shut down for next 7-10 days
Brad Penny (strained right lat) will be shut down completely for the next seven to 10 days.
Penny underwent an MRI on Wednesday that showed no further damage in the area of his throwing shoulder, but he is still feeling some discomfort. The big right-hander is doubtful to return to the Cardinals in the month of July and might not be back until the middle of August.

Tue Jul 6 201020:10Penny feeling tightness in triceps
Brad Penny told team officials that he felt tightness in his triceps area before his simulated game was cut short Tuesday.
Cardinals pitching Dave Duncan said he thinks it's "different" than the strained lat muscle that originally put him on the DL. We won't know for sure until he undergoes a fresh battery of tests -- including an MRI -- on Wenesday. Either way, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa wasn't about to sugarcoat the situation. "I wasn't going to get too serious until he threw off the mound," said La Russa said. "Now he's throwing off the mound and I was looking to the second half where he would fit in. This is a big negative." We should know more Wednesday.

Tue Jul 6 201018:04Penny (lat) shut down from simulated game
Brad Penny (strained right lat) was shut down from his simulated game Tuesday after feeling renewed soreness.
Penny is already on his way to St. Louis to be evaluated by team doctors. The big right-hander has been on the disabled list since May 22 and it doesn't sound like he'll be back anytime soon after this latest setback. The Cardinals could be in the market for a starting pitcher this month.
