Tovar will join the Mets for their upcoming three-game series against the Nationals, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports. |
Tovar will serve as a reserve infielder for the Mets, as Dilson Herrera's availability for the remainder of the season is in question after the second baseman suffered a strained right quad in Saturday's game. The 23-year-old collected three hits in 15 at-bats during the final part of the 2013 season, and could see sporadic middle infield work over the Mets' final six games. Tovar, who hit .282 but with a .345 OBA along with two home runs and 29 RBI for Double-Binghamton, is already on the Mets' 40-man roster, so no corresponding move will have to be made. |

Omar Quintanilla or Anthony Seratelli are now the top candidates for the backup middle infielder job. Tovar has a good glove and should still contribute with the big club at some point this year. |

Mets recalled INF Wilfredo Tovar from Double-A Binghamton. |
Ruben Tejada broke his right fibula on Wednesday night, so Tovar is being brought in as shortstop depth. The 22-year-old from Venezuela hit just .263/.323/.340 this summer at Double-A but he carries a strong defensive reputation. |
