Tue Aug 31 202110:30Jose Alvarado Earns Fifth Save On Monday Versus Nats
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jose Alvarado pitched a scoreless ninth inning versus the Nationals on Monday to earn his fifth save. Called on to protect a three-run lead, Alvarado immediately found himself in hot water as he allowed a double and a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. The right-hander buckled down, however, earning two strikeouts and a groundout to nail down the save. Ian Kennedy was likely unavailable for this game and should still be considered the favorite for saves in the Philly bullpen. Alvarado remains a high-risk fantasy option as his 19.7% walk rate is easily the highest among relief pitchers and has led to the occasional blow-up outing. He should be added if something were to happen to Kennedy, but for now, Alvarado should be on waivers in most formats.

Thu Aug 26 202120:34Jose Alvarado Returns From Injured List
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jose Alvarado (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day injured list on Thursday after dealing with shoulder soreness. The left-hander last appeared for the Phillies on Aug. 7, and he allowed one walk and struck out one in a scoreless rehab inning with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday before being activated. Alvarado does have four saves on the season, but he's been erratic with a career-high 8.5 walks per nine innings and a 4.89 FIP in 41 1/3 relief innings over 45 appearances. For now, he'll go back to a late-inning setup role alongside Archie Bradley in the Phillies bullpen. Veteran Ian Kennedy remains the favorite for saves in Philadelphia.

Thu Aug 12 202108:59Jose Alvarado Lands On The 10-Day Injured List
The Philadelphia Phillies placed relief pitcher Jose Alvarado (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday due to an impingement in his left shoulder. The move is retroactive to August 8. Alvarado was the only lefty in the Phillies' bullpen, so the team will have to get by with just righties for the time being, unless they decide to push Matt Moore to the bullpen or call up a lefty. Alvarado stated that he hopes to be back with the team when first eligible on August 18. He's had a rough year this year. Over 41.1 innings, Alvarado has a 4.35 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP to go along with four saves and 11 holds.

Tue May 25 202123:03Velasquez sharp, Hoskins homers, Phillies blank Marlins 2-0
MIAMI (AP) — Vince Velasquez pitched three-hit ball for six innings, Rhys Hoskins homered and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Miami Marlins 2-0 Tuesday night. The Phillies won hours after putting slugger Bryce Harper on the 10-day injured list because of a bruised left forearm. Scratched from his previous start because of finger discomfort on his pitching hand, Velasquez (2-0) struck out five and walked three. The right-hander continued a solid May, lowering his ERA this month to 1.17 in four starts and one relief outing. “I wasn’t really trying to blow anyone away," Velasquez said. “I tried to go deep in the game and have our bullpen come in and shut the door down. But at the same time if I’m in any type of jam, I’m not giving up,” Phillies manager Joe Girardi praised Velasquez for his recent impressive stretch of outings. “He’s been throwing the ball extremely well,” Girardi said. “He’s in a really good rhythm, he believes in what he’s doing and just keep it rolling.” Hoskins hit... SEATTLE (AP) — Spencer Turnbull pitched the fifth no-hitter in the majors this season, sending the Detroit Tigers to a 5-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Turnbull, who led the big leagues with 17 losses two years ago, had never gone more than seven innings in any of his previous 49 starts over three seasons. The five no-hitters through May 18 match the 1917 season for the most in baseball history by that date. Turnbull’s no-hitter was the eighth in Tigers history and their first since Justin Verlander’s in Toronto on May 7, 2011. The 28-year-old right-hander got a great defensive play from third baseman Jeimer Candelario in the seventh inning and then struck out Mitch Haniger in the ninth to end it. Turnbull (3-2) struck out nine and walked two. Turnbull threw 117 pitches, 77 for strikes. Haniger was the only batter to hit the ball hard enough to threaten a base hit. Wed May 19 202100:18Hunter gets key hit as Mets beat Braves 4-3
ATLANTA (AP) — The New York Mets got homers from Jonathan Villar and Tomás Nido, an unlikely hit from Tommy Hunter and strong performances by a string of relievers to beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3 Tuesday night. Villar hit a two-run shot in the third inning, and Nido won it for the Mets in the ninth with a tiebreaking drive into the left-field seats off struggling Braves closer Will Smith (0-4). One night after being struck in the face by a 95 mph fastball, Kevin Pillar brought New York’s lineup card to home plate before the game, a gesture that brought a huge sigh of relief to both teams. With his face swollen and badly bruised, Pillar still managed a smile as he shook hands with the four umpires and Braves coach Walt Weiss, who gave him a warm pat on the shoulder. Austin Riley and Freddie Freeman homered for Atlanta. Marcell Ozuna tied it for the Braves with a two-out, broken-bat single in the eighth off Jeurys Familia (2-0). PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Brandon Belt and Kevin Gausman made sure Gabe Kapler could raise a glass in his return to Philadelphia. Belt hit a two-run homer, Gausman niftily pitched out of trouble in six innings and the San Francisco Giants beat the Phillies 2-0 Monday night. Kapler became the first manager in major league baseball history to start his career 200-200. Kapler, who was 161-163 as Philadelphia’s manager in 2018-19, was booed when he brought out the lineup card. “My feelings are I’m just focused on doing a good job with the San Francisco Giants," Kapler said. His coaches and a few players, including Gausman, came into his office and had a drink together to celebrate his 200th win. “Hopefully it was a good win for him coming back to Philly,” Gausman said. Gausman (1-0) allowed six hits, walked four and struck out five.
