Tue Sep 2 201418:59Wes Welker: Suspended Four Games For Amphetamines
Welker (concussion) has been suspended four games for the use of amphetamines, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
Welker participated in individual drills in Monday's practice and was working his way back from a preseason concussion. He'll now get a month to fully recover from the concussion.

Welker (concussion) participated in individual drills at Monday morning's practice, ESPN's Jeff Legwold reports.
Meanwhile, the Denver Post suggests that if all goes well, Welker -- who suffered a concussion back on Aug. 23 -- could be cleared to fully participate in practice by Wednesday or Thursday. Such a scenario would put the wideout on pace to play in the team's season opener Sunday night against the Colts.

Welker (concussion) will increase his activity level in practice Monday as he continues to progress in the league's concussion protocol, ESPN reports. "One step at a time, still in the process, in (the) protocol. So, he'll be out running around Monday and continue through the protocol, take it one day at a time," said Broncos executive vice president of football operations/general manager John Elway.
Welker ran some routes in shorts and a T-shirt before Thursday's preseason game but did not play. He'll need to clear several benchmarks in the concussion protocal before he's cleared to play. We wouldn't rule him out for Week 1, but his status remains uncertain.

Welker (concussion) won't play in Thursday's preseason finale against the Cowboys, but he has been exercising and will travel with the Broncos to Dallas, Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports.
Klis adds that Welker's progress has been encouraging, but considering that the wideout has suffered three concussions since Nov. 17 of last year, the Broncos will no doubt proceed cautiously here in advance of Week 1.

Coach John Fox indicated that Welker (concussion) is "in the exercise mode right now," Broncos Vice President of Public Relation Patrick Smyth reports.
While it's a positive indicator that Welker has progressed to that stage, Fox adds that the wideout "won't be back out there until he's completely well." Given that Welker has suffered three concussions since Nov. 17 of last year, the Broncos will no doubt proceed with caution with the receiver, though previous reports have suggested that there is some optimism with regard to Welker's possible Week 1 availability.

Coach John Fox suggested that Welker is doing "fantastic" as he goes through the NFL's concussion protocol, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.
Of course, given that Welker has suffered three concussions since Nov. 17 of last year, we'd expect the Broncos to proceed with caution with the wideout. With that in mind, the Denver Post suggests that Welker, who did not practice Monday, will probably be out the rest of this week. The reports adds that there is hope within the Broncos' organization that Welker will pass his concussion tests and be cleared in advance of the team's Sept. 7 season opener, but such an outcome certainly precludes any setbacks.

Welker, who sustained a concussion Saturday, spoke with coach John Fox before practice Monday and said that he was "feeling good," the Denver Post reports.
Of course, with Welker going through the NFL's concussion protocol for the third time since Nov. 17, expect the Broncos to proceed cautiously with the wideout. At this stage, there is no timetable for Welker's possible return to the field, which hinges on him being cleared by the Broncos' medical staff and an independent doctor. Meanwhile, ESPN.com relays that that the subject of retirement has not been a part of Fox's talks with Welker since the receiver's latest concussion. "That's not been brought up at all," Fox said. "I didn't sense that." For now, according to Fox, the Broncos are approaching Welker's situation one day at a time, while adding, "he's going through the protocol and will be out there when healthy."
Sun Aug 24 201401:11Wes Welker: Diagnosed With Another Concussion
Welker (head) has been diagnosed with a concussion, Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports.
While never to be taken lightly, concussions are a particularly serious issue for Welker, who suffered two toward the end of last season. With the diagnosis confirmed after Saturday's game, the veteran slot man now looks shaky for Week 1. If Welker can't go, Andre Caldwell and/or Cody Latimer could see more playing time in three and four-wide sets, with Emmanuel Sanders quite possibly taking on some of Welker's targets.

Welker left Saturday's preseason game against the Texans in order to be examined for a potential concussion, Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports.
After missing practice Wednesday and Thursday for an unknown reason, Welker emerged banged up on a D.J. Swearinger hit, which was flagged for unnecessary roughness. Any head injury is especially worrisome considering Welker missed three games late last year due to multiple concussions. Until the severity of the injury is known, consider the veteran wideout day-to-day.
Thu Aug 21 201413:29Welker (unspecified reason) not spotted at Thursday's practice
Welker (unspecified reason) was not spotted at Thursday's practice, Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports.
The report notes that it's the second straight day Welker has missed, but so far there has been no mention of what's keeping the wideout off the field. We'll relay that information when it is available.

Welker caught two passes for seven yards on two targets in Thursday's preseason opener against the Seahawks.
Welker did his usual thing in a fairly brief appearance Thursday, and he doesn't figure to be all that active this preseason. Given that he's highly unlikely to match last season's pace of 10 touchdowns in 13 games, Welker will need to boost his other numbers back to pre-2013 levels in order to match his value from last year. While the Broncos lost Eric Decker, they added Emmanuel Sanders, and Julius Thomas only figures to get better with more experience. Andre Caldwell is also still around to poach the occasional target, and rookie second-round draft pick Cody Latimer shouldn't be forgotten about.
Thu May 29 201410:08Wes Welker entering last year with Broncos?
The Denver Post expects this to be Wes Welker's last season with the Broncos.
Following this season, Welker will be an unrestricted free agent entering his age-34 season. The Broncos have already made plans for his departure, as Emmanuel Sanders can kick inside and Cody Latimer can move into the starting lineup on the outside. Along with the rest of the Broncos, Welker is all-in for this season.

Mon Mar 17 201409:24Broncos exercise option on Welker's contract
The Broncos have exercised their 2014 option on Wes Welker's contract.
Welker collected a $3 million roster bonus last week, part of his $8 million in total possible compensation for 2014. He's locked and loaded as Peyton Manning's slot receiver once again, with a touch more upside thanks to Eric Decker's departure. Welker will be a 33-year-old unrestricted free agent in March of 2015, at which point we'd expect newly acquired Emmanuel Sanders to kick inside.

Thu Feb 20 201419:32Broncos expected to keep Wes Welker
Coach John Fox indicated Thursday that the Broncos have no plans to release Wes Welker.
"Wes Welker is under contract, so I don't think it's a tremendous decision," Fox said. The Broncos have to make a decision on Welker's $3 million roster bonus by next month, but it appears the decision has already been made. Welker battled two concussions as his 2013 production fell off from his New England days, but he still played at a high level. With Eric Decker fully expected to walk in free agency, retaining Welker is a no-brainer.

Sun Feb 2 201422:32Wes Welker: 8 catches, 84 yards vs. Seattle
Wes Welker racked up eight catches for 84 yards in Super Bowl 48.
Welker was quiet until midway through the second quarter, when Peyton Manning found him streaking across the field on a deep crosser for a gain of 16. The 32-year-old slot receiver piled up catches in garbage time, making no real impact when the game was still in doubt. Welker is under contract for $6 million in 2014, including a $3 million roster bonus. Turning 33 in May, Welker will return as a 90-catch candidate with increased upside if Eric Decker bolts in free agency.

Thu Jan 30 201415:38Welker: No plans to retire if DEN wins SB48
Wes Welker reiterated Thursday that he has no plans to retire if the Broncos win the Super Bowl.
"Of course it would be a good way to end it, but I am still having fun," Welker said. "I am still enjoying the game. I feel good, and as long as I am out there having fun, I will continue to play." A pint-sized slot receiver going on 33 and coming off a concussion-marred season, no one would blame Welker for riding off into the sunset. The $6 million remaining on his contract is a powerful incentive to continue playing, however. Welker will likely give more serious thought to hanging it up in 2015, when he'll be back on the open market.

Mon Jan 27 201410:37Wes Welker brushes off retirement talk
Wes Welker brushed off whispers that he could retire following Sunday's Super Bowl.
Welker is just 33 years old, has the potential to earn $6 million in 2014 and continues to be one of the game's best slot receivers. The whispers stem from his recent bout with two concussions. "I think so. We'll see what happens," Welker said when asked if he'll be back next season. "I've definitely been blessed with 10 more years than I ever thought I would play in the NFL. I'll just keep on playing until they tell me I can't anymore."

Sun Jan 19 201418:32Wes Welker held to 38 yards in victory
Wes Welker was held to four catches for 38 yards in the Broncos' AFC title game win over the Patriots.
Welker's most notable early impact was a second-quarter pick play on which he absolutely crushed a defenseless Aqib Talib. Welker should have been flagged, but NFL referees rarely call penalties on illegal picks. Talib (ribs) did not return. Welker later beat double coverage down the left sideline for 14 yards, but had a 13-yard catch negated by a hold on Broncos LT Chris Clark late in the first half. Welker now has 38 yards in each of Denver's playoff games.
