Sun Nov 3 201318:29Philip Rivers goes over 300 yet again
Philip Rivers completed 29-of-46 passes for 341 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's Week 9 overtime loss to the Redskins.
Rivers nearly had three touchdowns and a win, but Danny Woodhead was tackled at the 6-inch line with under a minute remaining in regulation. After three straight blown chances, the Chargers settled for a field goal and lost in overtime without Rivers even getting a chance to touch the ball. Regardless, it was yet another productive day for fantasy owners as Rivers continues to show full command of this Mike McCoy offense. He's on pace for 4,946 yards, 34 touchdowns and 14 interceptions heading into a Week 10 home game against the Broncos.

Sun Oct 20 201316:29Philip Rivers goes for 285 yards, touchdown
Philip Rivers completed 22-of-26 passes for 285 yards and a touchdown in the Chargers' Week 7 win over the Jaguars.
He added four rushing yards on two scrambles and took just one sack. Rivers has been rejuvenated in Mike McCoy's dink-and-dunk, quick-out passing offense, and picked apart the Jaguars' defense at will Sunday, even if the fantasy stats didn't fully cooperate. Keep him rostered during the Chargers' upcoming Week 8 bye. Rivers is going to be a QB1 for the rest of the season.

Mon Oct 14 201323:58Rivers throws for 237 yards, TD in MNF win
Philip Rivers completed 22-of-33 passes for 237 yards and one touchdown in Monday night's Week 6 victory over the Colts.
This was a game dominated by the Chargers' offensive line and running game, though Rivers found Keenan Allen for the contest's lone touchdown. Most of the damage was done on a second-quarter drive that saw Rivers find Allen and Antonio Gates for big third-down conversions before Allen beat double-coverage for a 22-yard score. Rivers didn't take many, if any, gambles through the air, instead letting Allen do work post-catch. Rivers will be on the QB1 radar next Sunday in Jacksonville. This San Diego offense is typically a pass-first bunch.

Sun Sep 22 201317:58Philip Rivers struggles in Week 3 vs. Titans
Philip Rivers completed 20-of-24 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown in the Chargers' Week 3 loss to the Titans.
It was a return to Earth game for the fast-starting Chargers offense, which struggled to move the ball after its opening drive against a mediocre Titans defense. Rivers has zero downfield presence in his receiving corps, which is going to make the offense easy for opponents to squat on. He'll be a two-quarterback-league option only when the Chargers take on the Cowboys in Week 4.

Fri Sep 6 201313:20Philip Rivers restructures his contract
Philip Rivers has agreed to restructure his contract, converting $5 million of his base salary into a "signing" bonus.
The cap space-clearing move was "done to sign a player," a source told beat writer Michael Gehlken, and it's believed it'll be Donald Butler to a long-term deal. Rivers' previous 2013 base salary was $12 million. His cap number has now been reduced by $3.32 million. Rivers remains under contract through 2015.

Sun Aug 25 201300:44Rivers has rough third preseason game
Philip Rivers completed 10-of-18 passes for 71 yards and an interception in Saturday's preseason game against the Cardinals.
Rivers averaged just 3.9 yards-per-attempt and completed the majority of his passes on short-to-intermediate throws. His interception came on a deflected pass to Jasper Brinkley and he finished with a brutal 41.7 quarterback rating. Through three preseason games, Rivers has completed 20-of-33 passes for 166 yards and two interceptions. He remains a middling QB2 in fantasy leagues.

Thu Aug 15 201321:21Rivers throws pick, loses fumble Thursday
Philip Rivers completed 5-of-9 passes for 50 yards and an interception in Thursday night's preseason game against the Bears.
Rivers was also sacked three times and lost a fumble on a play where LT Max Starks didn't lay a hand on Bears DE Shea McClellin. Rivers was walloped from behind and coughed it up. On the pick, Rivers tried to hit Keenan Allen on a post but Allen fell down. Through two preseason games, Rivers is 10-of-15 for 95 yards and the interception. He's nothing more than a middling QB2.

Fri Jul 26 201322:04Rivers throwing underneath more than ever
Philip Rivers has been "throwing more underneath passes than he can remember" at Chargers practices.
Under ex-Broncos OC Mike McCoy and ex-Cardinals HC Ken Whisenhunt, the Chargers are installing a higher-percentage, quick-hitting passing offense ala Peyton Manning and Kurt Warner's. It's totally different from Norval Turner's vertical attack. The idea is to get the football out of Rivers' hands quickly. San Diego's best underneath receivers are Antonio Gates and Vincent Brown.

Mon Jul 8 201317:40Jaws: Philip Rivers' play has 'deteriorated'
After studying Philip Rivers' 2012 tape, ESPN's Ron Jaworski described Rivers' play as "deteriorating" and said he was "disappointed" watching the film.
Jaws still loves the way Rivers "commands the offense" but was disappointed in his tendency to "force" things and attempt to become a "playmaker" when he's in nature a disciplined "pocket quarterback." Rivers' decline has been swift and steady, and for the second straight offseason we're skeptical he's capable of bouncing back. Rivers has become overreactive when under duress, and there's little question his arm strength has regressed.

Fri Jun 28 201313:05Philip Rivers to count $15M on '14 salary cap
Philip Rivers is scheduled to count $15 million against the Chargers' salary cap in 2014.
His '14 base salary will be $13.8 million. With San Diego changing its offense under new overseers Mike McCoy and Ken Whisenhunt, 31-year-old Rivers is likely facing a make-or-break season in San Diego. He's been intercepted 35 times the past two years -- just four fewer than Mark Sanchez. Behind a still-brutal offensive line, we don't envision a bounce-back 2013 season for Rivers.

Tue Jun 18 201311:18Chargers implementing quicker pass offense
The Chargers are implementing a shorter passing offense designed to get the ball out of Philip Rivers' hands more quickly.
It's a smart idea due to pass-protection woes, and both Mike McCoy (Peyton Manning offense) and OC Ken Whisenhunt (Kurt Warner offense) have experience in systems that emphasize shorter drops and getting the ball out quick. Rivers, on the other hand, has never played in an offense like this and it'll be interesting to see the transition. Norv Turner and Cam Cameron's schemes were of the "Air Coryell" variety, constantly pushing the ball downfield.

Fri Jun 7 201309:02Rivers: Best football still ahead of me
Philip Rivers still believes his best football is ahead of him.
"I really do," Rivers insisted. "That's being optimistic, because we've had a lot of really good years. I am probably on the second half of my career, the back end, but I think I've got a lot of good football left." It's definitely an "optimistic" belief for a player who turned 31 in December and has committed 47 turnovers over his past 32 games. We don't doubt Rivers will cut down on his turnovers this season, but with aggressive coach Norval Turner now in Cleveland, Rivers shouldn't even approach the statistical highs of his earlier years.

Mon May 13 201309:02Mike McCoy still bullish on Philip Rivers
New Chargers coach Mike McCoy believes Philip Rivers can complete 70 percent of his passes in 2013.
Rivers converted just 63.5 percent of his throws as he posted a 53:35 TD:INT ratio over the past two seasons. "I've been blown away by his anticipation and willingness to learn,'' McCoy said. Per SI's Peter King, McCoy plans to "harp on" getting Rivers to "trust the system," and not fall in love with his ability to fit deep balls into small windows. A career 63.6 passer, Rivers isn't going to suddenly become Drew Brees, but it's not hard to believe he'll be more accurate with deep-ball aficionado Norval Turner now in Cleveland.

Sat Apr 20 201312:16Mike McCoy believes a great season for Rivers
New Chargers coach Mike McCoy is impressed with QB Philip Rivers and believes "he's going to have a great season."
While McCoy's take is optimistic, the Chargers need to upgrade a shaky offensive line that allowed 49 sacks in 2012. The consistent pressure Rivers has faced has also contributed to him committing 47 turnovers in the last two seasons.
