Wed Apr 3 201323:402013 Rivers' 'final audition' in San Diego?
The Union-Tribune San Diego's Kevin Acee thinks 2013 is Philip Rivers' "final audition" with the Chargers.
Acee bases this on San Diego's decision not to restructure the 31-year-old's contract despite being up against the cap. Rivers has three years left on a seven-year, $98.25 million deal, and he's set to count $17.1 million against the cap in 2013. He has turned the ball over 47 times and has been sacked 79 times over the last two seasons. If Rivers doesn't get some help up front, things may not change much. The new front office and coaching staff also has no ties to Rivers.

Mon Feb 25 201311:28Should the Chargers trade Rivers?
The Union-Tribune San Diego's Kevin Acee believes the Chargers should trade Philip Rivers if they aren't willing to conduct a "massive rebuild" of their offensive line.
Acee floated his idea to a "half-dozen agents and assistant coaches" at the Combine, and "none disagreed," while most "vehemently concurred." Rivers got absolutely battered in 2012, getting sacked on 50 of his 587 drop backs. The Bolts' most glaring need is at left tackle, where Jared Gaither up and quit last season. Picking 11th, the Chargers are in prime position to draft an impact lineman.

Wed Feb 20 201311:49Mike McCoy is happy to work with Rivers
New coach Mike McCoy said he feels "very fortunate" to be working with Philip Rivers.
McCoy probably wouldn't have taken the job in San Diego if he didn't think Rivers had plenty left in the tank. Perhaps he sees something on tape we didn't. Rivers appears to have lost the pop in his arm and has turned the ball over 47 times in his last 32 games. Even with the offensive gurus McCoy and Ken Whisenhunt in town, we can't project a major bounce-back campaign. Rivers' yards-per-attempt has decreased in each of the last four seasons.

Sat Jan 19 201314:14Chargers hire Frank Reich as QBs coach
Chargers hired Frank Reich as quarterbacks coach.
Reich will be another new face in San Diego tasked with "fixing" Philip Rivers. He's another bright offensive mind who worked as Peyton Manning's quarterbacks coach in Indianapolis from 2009-10. Reich spent the 2012 season on new Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt's Arizona staff as the receivers coach.

Tue Jan 15 201318:33Chargers coach McCoy will not call plays
New Chargers coach Mike McCoy plans to hire an offensive coordinator who will also handle play-calling duties.
McCoy promised to be "heavily involved" in game-planning and installation, but "game-day responsibilities" will keep him from calling plays. It's the opposite of Norv Turner's approach the past few seasons. McCoy cited the presence of Philip Rivers as a primary factor in accepting the job. The respect is mutual. "Of the potential candidates, I can honestly say this is the guy I was hoping for," Rivers told XEPRS-AM on Tuesday. "I feel great about it."

Sun Dec 30 201220:05Philip Rivers gets a win for Norv in finale
Philip Rivers completed 13-of-17 passes for 151 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Chargers' Week 17 win over the Raiders.
Rivers got Norv Turner a win what's expected to be his final game as the Chargers' head coach, but his declining play led to Norv's demise. In the first 12 games of the season, Rivers threw just 18 touchdowns against 15 interceptions. On the season, he averaged just 225.3 yards per game, his worst mark since 2007. Rivers is just 31 and theoretically in his prime, but candidates for the Chargers' head coaching gig will have to decide how much is left in his arm.

Sun Dec 16 201220:03Rivers throws for 121 yards, 3 touchdowns
Philip Rivers completed 16-of-23 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown in the Chargers' Week 15 blowout loss to Carolina.
He scrambled three times for four yards. The Chargers got dominated in time of possession and had no prayer in pass protection. Rivers settled for checkdowns throughout the contest, completing just two passes for 39 yards combined to outside receivers Malcom Floyd and Danario Alexander, on five combined targets. Rivers has had a nightmare 2012 season, bringing San Diego's skill-position players down along with him. The Chargers will face the Jets' top-five pass defense in Week 16.

Sun Dec 9 201216:40Philip Rivers shows up with monster game
Philip Rivers completed 21-of-41 passes for 200 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Chargers' Week 14 upset of the Steelers.
With the pressure off the 4-8 Chargers, Rivers turned in his best performance of the season. Instead of forcing passes into coverage, he took what the defense game him and was content to simply throw balls away. When Danario Alexander was in 1-on-1 coverage, he gave his dominant weapon a chance. Rivers has now thrown at least 20 touchdown passes in seven straight seasons. He'll still just be a QB2 in a tasty matchup against the Panthers next week.

Sun Dec 2 201220:13Rivers picked again as Chargers lose, again
Philip Rivers completed 26-of-48 passes for 280 yards and an interception in the Chargers' Week 13 loss to Cincinnati.
He also scrambled twice for 20 yards. Regardless, Rivers' performance has been holding San Diego's offense hostage this season. He reacts to pressure even when it isn't there, and his arm strength has diminished to the point that Rivers is a "floater" passer. His ball hangs in the air. Through 12 games, Rivers is on pace for a 24:20 TD-to-INT ratio and 3,959 passing yards. The yardage total would be a six-year low for San Diego's 31-year-old quarterback.

Sun Nov 25 201220:06Rivers and Chargers blow fourth quarter lead
Philip Rivers completed 23-of-36 passes for 228 yards and one touchdown in the Chargers' Week 12, 16-13 overtime loss to the Ravens on Sunday.
Rivers and the Chargers pretty much had the game in hand before stalling in the fourth quarter and letting the Ravens claw their way back into it and eventually take the win out of San Diego's grasps in overtime. Rivers didn't turn the ball over at all, but he was sacked six times behind a decimated offensive line. San Diego led 13-3 partway through the fourth quarter but fell to 4-7 on the season. They're dead as far as the postseason goes. Norv Turner may have also coached his final game. The Chargers host the Bengals in Week 13.

Sun Nov 18 201219:58Rivers commits 3 more turnovers as Bolts fall
Philip Rivers completed 24-of-40 passes for 258 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions as San Diego was downed by Denver 30-23 in Week 11.
He committed a third turnover on a lost fumble. Rivers is lucky the Chargers plucked Danario Alexander off the street. Otherwise, he wouldn't have anywhere attractive to go with the football. The Chargers' offensive line was a sieve for the first three quarters Sunday, and defenses have been taking away 32-year-old Antonio Gates all season. Malcom Floyd is more of a jump-ball than separation receiver. Alexander went off for 96 yards Sunday, securing both of Rivers' touchdown passes, and is keeping Rivers' fantasy value in the high-end QB2 range despite all of the problems with the offense. The Chargers host an unimposing Ravens defense next.

Mon Nov 12 201215:27Norval gives Rivers vote of confidence
Chargers coach Norv Turner gave Philip Rivers a vote of confidence at Monday's press conference.
Turner said Rivers still gives the Chargers their best chance to win. The fact that Turner felt compelled to speak on his quarterback's status at all is indicative of just how shaky Rivers' play has been of late. Seven of Rivers' 12 interceptions have come in the Chargers' past four games. His fourth-quarter pick to Leonard Johnson in Sunday's loss was perhaps the worst throw by any QB all season. Rivers' job is in no danger, but Turner's is as good as gone if his signal caller can't significantly improve his play down the stretch.

Sun Nov 11 201217:56Philip Rivers melts down in another loss
Philip Rivers completed 29-of-37 passes for 337 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in the Chargers' Week 10 loss to the Bucs.
Rivers started off on fire against the league's worst pass defense, putting up two touchdowns and more than 150 passing yards in the first quarter. From there, questionable decision-making ensued. His worst error was one of the most absurd pick-sixes we've ever seen as Rivers threw directly to Bucs CB Leonard Johnson for no explainable reason. The good news is that he discovered a playmaker opposite Malcom Floyd in Danario Alexander. Rivers has a very difficult matchup in Denver next week.

Thu Nov 1 201223:24Rivers tosses 2 TDs to get Chargers to 4-4
Philip Rivers completed 18-of-20 passes for 220 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in San Diego's Week 9, 31-13 win over the Chiefs on Thursday night.
Rivers came out slinging the rock all over the Kansas City defense, completing his first 13 passes. The lone blemish on his night was an ugly end zone interception at the end of the first half where he tried to force a ball into a blanketed Dante Rosario. Rivers' first touchdown went to Antonio Gates on the opening drive from 14 yards out. His second was a 13-yarder to Malcom Floyd in the fourth quarter. At the midway point in the season, Rivers is on pace to complete 66.5 percent of his passes for 3,692 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions. San Diego sits at 4-4 and second in the AFC West. They'll have 10 days off before going to Tampa Bay in Week 10.

Mon Oct 29 201210:42Still something wrong with Rivers' arm?
According to Yahoo's Mike Silver, "some league executives and coaches" still believe there may be something wrong with Philip Rivers' throwing arm.
Questions about Rivers' arm ran rampant after the Chargers stumbled out of the gate last season, but died down after he had a strong second half. However, he's averaging a career-worst 6.8 yards per attempt through the Bolts' first seven games, and has turned the ball over 12 times. He completed just 18-of-34 passes for 154 yards in Sunday's loss in Cleveland. Firmly a QB2 in redraft leagues, Rivers' light is beginning to flicker in Dynasty formats, as well.

Tue Oct 16 201218:25Chargers may scale back offense
Coach Norv Turner emphasized Tuesday that turnovers will be "eliminated" even if it means scaling back the Chargers' offense.
"Yes, we are going to limit some things we're doing, and I've got to do a better job and make sure we put things in there, and then we're calling things that have less risk," said Turner. "They may not have as big of a reward. We may not be quite the same big-play team, but we're not going to turn the ball over." Philip Rivers has shown a curious mix of hesitation and careless aggression behind a subpar offensive line the past two years. Throttling down the offense is obviously a bad omen for his already struggling fantasy value.

Mon Oct 15 201223:59Rivers with six turnovers in epic collapse
Philip Rivers completed 25-of-41 passes for 242 yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions in San Diego's 35-24, Week 6 loss to the Broncos on Monday night.
Rivers also lost two fumbles on the night. One interception and one fumble were returned by Denver for touchdowns. Rivers and the Chargers went into the locker room at halftime leading the game 24-0, but the offense was downright atrocious in the final two quarters. The offense shied away from the run game after the break, and Rivers' turnovers killed any chance of a win. Both touchdown scores went to Antonio Gates. San Diego heads into their bye week at 3-3 and will go to Cleveland in Week 8.

Mon Oct 8 201200:00Philip Rivers throws for 354 yards in loss
Philip Rivers completed 27-of-42 passes for 354 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in San Diego's Week 5 loss to the Saints.
Rivers had the Chargers in command for three quarters, but as his protection unraveled late in the second half, so did the Bolts' lead. Rivers had his deep ball working, converting four throws of at least 20 yards. It would have been five had a ticky-tack offensive pass interference call on Antonio Gates not wiped out another big gain on San Diego's futile final drive. The 300-yard passing effort was Rivers' first of the season. Averaging only 250 yards per game, Rivers' TD:INT ratio is an uninspiring 8:5 through five contests. He'll get the Broncos in Week 6.

Sun Sep 30 201216:43Rivers throws two scores in Week 4 win
Philip Rivers completed 18-of-23 passes for 209 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in the Chargers' 37-20, Week 4 win over the Chiefs.
Rivers didn't have to do a whole lot. The Chiefs turned the ball over six times in their own territory, setting up Rivers and the San Diego offense with prime field position all afternoon. He got his blindside protector, Jared Gaither, back on Sunday, too. Rivers hooked up with Eddie Royal from four yards out for the first score of the game in the first quarter. Rivers is on pace to complete 69 percent of his passes for 3,588 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. San Diego goes to New Orleans in Week 5 for a juicy matchup.
