Wed Nov 13 201318:11Daniel Thomas (ankle) limited Wednesday
Daniel Thomas (ankle) was limited in practice Wednesday.
Lamar Miller owners can only hope that Thomas sits out this week. That's unlikely to happen. Thomas will continue to mix in but isn't a fantasy option.

Fri Nov 1 201300:50Daniel Thomas held to 38 yards on 12 carries
Daniel Thomas rushed for just 38 yards on 12 carries in Thursday night's Week 9 win over the Bengals.
He added one catch for four yards on two targets. Thomas was used in a short-yardage and change-of-pace role behind Lamar Miller and got majority of his work late in the second quarter after Miller was briefly benched for fumbling. He was held out of the end-zone for the fifth straight week and remains nothing more than a low-ceiling RB4 in re-draft leagues.

Sun Oct 27 201318:23Daniel Thomas handles 10 touches in Week 8
Daniel Thomas rushed nine times for 47 yards and caught a touchdown pass in the Dolphins' Week 8 loss to New England.
Thomas started in Week 7. He was Lamar Miller's backup this week, running hard and scoring a five-yard touchdown on a quick inside route. Miller finished with 19 touches compared to Thomas' 10. Thomas continues to be unworthy of a roster spot in 12-team leagues because he's the less-talented half of a timeshare on a team that hasn't made a weekly commitment to the running game.

Tue Oct 1 201301:01Daniel Thomas terrible in MNF loss to Saints
Daniel Thomas rushed for just one yard on four carries in Monday night's Week 4 loss to the Saints.
Thomas was badly outplayed by Lamar Miller for the second week in a row. Thomas was given a carry on third-and-inches on the Dolphins' opening drive -- one in which Miller was gashing the New Orleans defense -- and ended up losing two yards on the play, forcing the Dolphins to settle for a field goal. Thomas also couldn't cash in on a goal-line look later in the contest. Miller scored from five yards away earlier in the game. Miller is head-and-shoulders above Thomas in all aspects of the position, and he should take over clear lead-back duties sooner rather than later. Thomas is on pace to rush for 264 yards and eight touchdowns on 100 carries (2.64 YPC). He's safe to drop.

Sun Sep 8 201317:59Daniel Thomas gets a touchdown plunge
Daniel Thomas rushed eight times for 14 yards with a touchdown and caught one pass for five yards in Sunday's win over the Browns.
Thomas was a spectator for the first two drives of the game. But with starter Lamar Miller unable to generate anything positive, he mixed in for an even share of the snaps the rest of the way. And when the Dolphins found themselves with a first-and-goal from the 1-yard line, they called on Thomas to punch it in. Still, look for Miller to start next week's game against the Colts again and find far more running room, leading to fewer opportunities for Thomas. Sell high now if possible.

Thu Sep 5 201311:35Thomas & Miller to share Dolphins backfield?
Daniel Thomas anticipates receiving "pretty much the same amount of reps" as starter Lamar Miller despite coming off the bench.
Coach Joe Philbin did call the starting job a "very, very close" call between Miller and Thomas, despite the fact Miller averaged 4.24 yards per carry in the preseason to Thomas' 2.74 YPC. Pro Football Focus charted Thomas with zero broken tackles in 19 exhibition game rushing attempts, and PFF also gave Miller higher marks in pass protection. The Dolphins may open the season using a drive-by-drive running back rotation, but our expectation is Miller will ultimately separate himself because he's clearly the superior talent.

Mon Aug 26 201321:33Dolphins using Thomas to motivate Miller?
The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero suspects the Dolphins have talked up Daniel Thomas as a serious competitor for the starting tailback job in an effort to "motivate" Lamar Miller and "keep him from feeling comfortable."
Thomas is clearly the inferior player -- and Miller has started each of Miami's four preseason games -- so Salguero guesses they've talked up a running battle for "psychological reason(s)." Salguero does conced this isn't like Joe Philbin. Still, there's nary a doubt left Thomas will be the No. 2 to Miller's No. 1, and forward-thinking fantasy owners who forecasted this early will benefit in their leagues. Miller is a big-time breakout candidate.

Sat Aug 24 201321:42Daniel Thomas struggles in preseason game
Daniel Thomas managed three yards on seven carries and caught two passes for 12 yards in the Dolphins' fourth preseason game Saturday night.
Although the Dolphins' coaching staff fancies Thomas an assignment-sound player, his talent deficiencies are glaring when the offensive line doesn't open gaping holes. Thomas has run harder than we've seen him in the past, but he lacks speed to get the corner and any hint of elusiveness. It's obvious Lamar Miller is Miami's superior running back. Through four exhibition tilts, Thomas has 19 carries for 52 yards (2.74 YPC). Miller has received more goal line-type carries and also played ahead of Thomas in Saturday night's two-minute offense.

Sat Aug 17 201323:07Daniel Thomas piles up 52 yards vs. Texans
Daniel Thomas rushed four times for 25 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Texans, adding one catch for 27 yards.
Thomas watched from the sideline for Miami's first two possessions before alternating series with Lamar Miller for the rest of the first half. Thomas out-gained Miller 52-13, but it was Miller who got the first-team offense's lone goal-line tote. GM Jeff Ireland has been fueling talk that Thomas could make himself part of a committee backfield, but he's not beating down the door this preseason. That's not surprising considering his career 3.5 yards per carry.

Sat Aug 17 201315:27Daniel Thomas to be Fins' GL & 3rd-down back?
The Palm Beach Post projects Daniel Thomas as the Dolphins' "goal-line and third-down back."
Beat writer Andrew Abramson projects Lamar Miller as Miami's starter, but says Thomas is better in pass protection and has shown improved ball security after fumbling five times among his first 256 NFL carries. Thomas is a tentative, soft runner despite his 6-foot-1, 228-pound frame, and has always struggled in short yardage. We'd hold off on markering him in as a goal-line vulture.

Wed Aug 14 201316:38Ireland: RB Thomas will have breakout season
Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland expects Daniel Thomas to have a "breakout season."
That's true love. Coach Joe Philbin has been pleased with Thomas' camp, but the stench of his first two seasons remains pungent. A breakout year from Thomas would qualify as the "out of nowhere" variety. It's not going to happen for Lamar Miller's backup.

Mon Aug 12 201315:30Dolphins pleased with Daniel Thomas' camp
Dolphins coach Joe Philbin says he's been pleased with Daniel Thomas' running and pass blocking through two-plus weeks of camp.
Thomas has been mixed in with the first-team offense behind Lamar Miller, and the Fins say the camp battle is ongoing. "I like what he's doing this camp," Philbin said. "I'm very happy with the way he's practicing. He's running the ball hard. He's been doing a good job in pass protection." In 2012, only four NFL backs with as many carries as Thomas averaged a lower YPC: Alex Green, La'Rod Stephens-Howling, Darren McFadden, and Rashad Jennings.

Sat Aug 10 201314:40Dolphins 'much higher' on Thomas than fans
The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins are "much higher" on Daniel Thomas and believe he can handle short-yardage duties.
Why the Dolphins remain so high on Thomas is the real question. He has shown absolutely nothing in two seasons since being the No. 62 overall pick in the 2011 draft, and he's averaged just 3.0 YPC on eight preseason totes. The Dolphins would be wise to consider keeping Jonas Gray as the short-yardage pounder, but they seem intent on keeping the plodding Thomas as their No. 2.

Fri Aug 9 201322:09Daniel Thomas plodding through preseason
Daniel Thomas rushed four times for 19 yards in the Dolphins' second preseason game Friday night.
On the preseason, Thomas has 24 rushing yards on eight carries (3.0 YPC) and one reception for a gain of one. He's obviously no threat to Lamar Miller and the Dolphins would be smart to consider cutting Thomas, keeping Jonas Gray and rookie Mike Gillislee behind Miller, instead.

Sun Aug 4 201321:27Daniel Thomas goes nowhere in HOF game
Daniel Thomas rushed four times for five yards and caught a one-yard pass in the Dolphins' preseason opener against Dallas.
The yardage results of Thomas' five Hall of Fame Game touches: 3, 1, 5, 3, -6. Thomas played two snaps with Miami's first-team offense after Lamar Miller was rested, and spent the rest of the night on the twos. Mike Gillislee and Jonas Gray were the backs to play behind Thomas. Thomas is not a serious competitor with Miller for the starting job. He's more likely to be challenged by fifth-round rookie Gillislee to back up Miller.

Mon Jul 22 201309:36Dolphins hoping for big year from RB Thomas
The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero reports that the Dolphins expect to "get a huge year" from Daniel Thomas if he stays healthy.
Thomas was the clear-cut No. 2 running back throughout minicamp and OTAs, but the Dolphins are expected to let him compete with Lamar Miller for playing time in training camp. Even if Thomas can put together a strong preseason, he won't be more than a short-yardage and redzone specialist.

Fri Jun 14 201313:38Daniel Thomas is Dolphins' No. 2 back
Daniel Thomas has been the Dolphins' clear-cut No. 2 running back throughout minicamp and Organized Team Activities.
As the Miami Herald writes, there's "no mystery" about the Dolphins' tailback depth chart. Lamar Miller is locked in as the first-teamer, with Thomas No. 2 and rookie Mike Gillislee attempting to hold off longer-shot competitors like Jonas Gray for the third-string job. Gillislee could make a move on Thomas in training camp, but Thomas won't be making a move on Miller.

Tue May 14 201322:00Daniel Thomas irritated at Lamar Miller talk
Daniel Thomas believes he's a legitimate contender for the Dolphins' starting running back job
Thomas must not be watching much of his own film. "I don't know why (Lamar Miller) would have the inside track," Thomas said incredulously Tuesday. "It's an open competition. Everybody has a fair shot. The best player is going to get the job. Nobody has a leg up." Thomas does admit he's been "inconsistent" since being the No. 62 overall pick of the 2011 draft. All signs suggest the Dolphins want and expect Miller to be their No. 1 back.

Wed Apr 3 201310:36Daniel Thomas on thin ice with Dolphins
The Dolphins are reportedly concerned about Daniel Thomas' ability to be a physical goal-line back.
After two NFL seasons, it's obvious that Thomas is not a difference-making NFL runner. He's averaged just 3.53 yards per carry, scored a mere four touchdowns, fumbled five times and missed seven games due to injury. With Lamar Miller assuming feature back duties, Thomas will simply be trying to carve out any role he can this offseason. If he can't pin down the goal-line job, it's another boost for Miller's rapidly rising fantasy stock.
