The Jags' depth chart appears to be settled at running back, with Toby Gerhart locked in as the starter, and Todman in line to serve as the top backup. The only hint of a battle is between Denard Robinson and Storm Johnson for the No. 3 spot, a role Robinson played in Thursday's game. With Gerhart expected to handle third-down and goal-line duties, Todman may not have much stand-alone value.

Todman only played one quarter, finishing his night with five yards on five carries and six yards on one reception. While the performance wasn't impressive, there was really nothing to like about the Jags' first-team offense. Denard Robinson managed 36 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, but the former QB didn't touch the ball until the second half, as seventh-round rookie Storm Johnson worked as Todman's backup. Toby Gerhart (hip) is merely day-to-day and seemingly locked in as the starter, while Todman appears to have a firm grip on the No. 2 role. It may be that the only competition left is between Johnson and Robinson for the third-string spot.

Todman is off to a great start at training camp and has a firm hold on the No. 2 running back spot, ESPN reports.

While Toby Gerhart is expected to be the Jaguars' workhorse next season, Todman figures to work his way into the rotation. He quietly emerged as a quality backup to Maurice Jones-Drew last season and is now ready to step into a similar role as Jacksonville's change-of-pace back. "Size isn't my weapon. It's my speed," Todman said. "I feel like I've always played full-speed, but more importantly this camp I feel like I've been moving and am comfortable at a high level." The 5-10 Todman is the virtual opposite of Gerhart, a bruising, between-the-tackles back who checks in at 6-0, 235 pounds. Gerhart isn't known as a big-play threat, so coach Gus Bradley hopes Todman can provide the Jags with that game-breaking ability. "You're seeing him break some," Bradley said. "The other day he had one where he broke and you saw him accelerate. Today he had another one, and I think that's what we're counting on him for -- to give that change-up, that burst that we know he has."

Jaguars OC Jedd Fisch made it clear he envisions Jordan Todman as a "change of pace" back.

Toby Gerhart detractors have suggested Todman might pose a threat to Gerhart's workload or even his starting job, but Fisch doesn't seem to agree. "Those two guys are truly change-of-pace backs," Fisch said of Todman and Denard Robinson, who are vying for the pace-change role behind Gerhart. Fisch did praise Todman's "burst, speed and acceleration." Still, Gerhart lacks a clear handcuff with Todman, Robinson, and Storm Johnson all competing for backup duties.

Todman averaged 27.4 yards per on 26 kick returns last season, good for seventh in the league. Second-round rookie Marqise Lee has experience returning kicks from his USC days and could provide competition for Todman this summer. He showed plus burst around the edge on 76 carries last season but averaged just 3.4 YPC. Todman also turned 14 catches into 116 yards and a score.

Todman has only one "accrued year" (six-plus games of service time) in the NFL despite entering as a sixth-round pick in the 2011 draft. So he's actually two years away from restricted free agency. The Jaguars' offense isn't effective enough to support two running backs and Todman failed to do anything with his limited carries. He'll remain on the lesser half of a timeshare with Jones-Drew in the regular season finale against the Colts in Week 17.

Beat writer Hays Carlyon has had a good read on this situation recently, especially from a fantasy perspective. He expects Jones-Drew to get around 16 touches and Jordan Todman to be limited to 8-10. That projection assumes the Jags are going to sustain drives and get their running backs around 25 total touches, which is certainly no sure thing. Ideally, owners will simply avoid this timeshare because the upside is capped.

He handled the ball 29 times, while Denard Robinson chipped in just two carries. The Jaguars featured Todman around the edges, showing off his excellent speed. The only thing missing for fantasy owners was a touchdown. Todman definitely has some talent. MJD will look to test his hammy out next week in practice. If he can't go, Todman will handle all of the work against a leaky Tennessee run defense.

Maurice Jones-Drew (hamstring) is inactive. The Jags were already trying to get Todman some touches as part of a committee, so now they'll get to take a long look at him as a feature back. He gets to face the Bills' No. 26 run defense, is playing at home and beat writer Hays Carlyon is expecting 17-22 touches. Todman has struggled in limited regular season work, but did post a 22/223/2 line in the preseason.

Todman came on for an injured Maurice Jones-Drew (hamstring) midway through the fourth quarter, but promptly came down with a cramp, missing a series before returning. Four of Todman's seven carries came in clock-killing mode. His touchdown was a trick play where he caught a pass from WR Ace Sanders. With Justin Forsett (broken foot) still sidelined, Todman would likely get the start in Week 15 against the Bills if MJD can't go. He'd be little more than a low-end FLEX play.

Todman will continue to get 6-10 touches on a weekly basis as Jones-Drew's change-of-pace complement.
