Mon Oct 10 201120:33Benard broke his hand in accident, not arm
Updating an earlier item, Browns DE Marcus Benard broke his hand, not his arm, in the motorcycle accident he was in on the way home from practice on Monday.
This takes the injury out of the season-ending range and puts him in the week-to-week category, for now. He has been underutilized so far, so his absence isn't going to change the dynamic of the Browns defense too much.

Mon Oct 10 201117:11Browns DE Benard breaks his arm in accident
Browns DE Marcus Benard suffered a broken arm in a motorcycle accident on his way away from Monday's practice.
He's been transferred to the Cleveland Clinic for further evaluation, but a broken arm is a season-threatening injury for the situational pass rusher. The best news is that Benard avoided truly serious injuries. Benard was underutilized in the first four games, averaging only about 10 snaps per week. He did have one special teams tackle, three more on defense, and a half-sack.

Mon Oct 10 201116:07Browns DE Benard hospitalized after accident
Browns DE Marcus Benard was rushed to the hospital Monday afternoon after crashing his motorcycle into the wall of a Cleveland-area interstate.
Benard is believed to have been on his way home from practice when the accident occurred. A local hospital confirmed he is a patient, but has yet to release his condition. Local FOX reporter John Telich reports Benard's injuries are "serious, but not life threatening." Benard has been a rotational pass rusher this season, notching three tackles and one sack in four games.

Mon Aug 1 201119:53Marcus Benard reports to Browns heavy
Browns nickel pass rusher Marcus Benard showed up to camp 20 pounds heavier than his listed weight of 256.
Browns DC Dick Jauron indicated that he wasn't totally pleased with the weight gain because Benard won't play on early downs anyway. "He got a little heavier, but he really didn't have to because we're looking for speed there," Jauron said. When Benard gets in shape, he'll be Cleveland's No. 3 defensive end.

Mon May 16 201111:36Benard could rush the passer full time?
Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron expressed some interest in trying LB Marcus Benard as a full-time defensive end.
GM Tom Heckert has already splashed cold water on this idea, saying he sees Benard as more of a situational pass rusher. But Heckert can't deny that Benard is the best pure rusher on the team after racking up 11 1/2 sacks in his first 21 games. At a minimum, Benard will get every opportunity to improve on his eight sacks from a year ago.

Sat Feb 26 201109:37Heckert: Benard is situational pass rusher
Browns GM Tom Heckert indicated at the Combine that he does not envision Marcus Benard as an every-down defensive end.
Heckert used the term "situational pass rusher," which may make it tough for the 256-pound Benard to earn a three-down role in Cleveland's new 4-3 defense. The Browns are dangerously short on defensive ends, particularly with Matt Roth not signed for 2011. Benard led the team with 7.5 sacks last season.

Mon Feb 21 201111:34Benard to be the next Cameron Wake?
Profootballfocus.com says that Browns LB Marcus Benard "could be next year's Cameron Wake if the Browns decide to play him full time."
Wake, of course, broke out for 14 sacks last season while rushing off the edge in Miami. As the best pure pass rusher on the Browns, Benard figures to get plenty of opportunities next season. Profootballfocus notes that Benard had a pressure every 7.5 rushes -- a number almost identical to Clay Matthews' ratio of one per 7.53 rushes.

Browns LB Marcus Benard attributes last week's locker-room fainting spell to stress.
Benard's "stress" involves the impending birth of his son. He never lost consciousness, and he indicated that doctors ruled out any heart problems or a serious medical condition. He should be fine going forward.

Fri Nov 12 201011:23Benard won't practice, will take tests
Browns LB Marcus Benard will miss practice Friday while taking tests to figure out why he fainted in the locker room Thursday.
Benard is said to be in good spirits and coach Eric Mangini has yet to rule him out of this week's game. Thus far, the Browns believe Benard's collapse was nothing more than a simple fainting episode.

Browns LB Marcus Benard received attention from trainers after collapsing in the locker room Thursday.
Benard was sitting in a chair talking on the phone and suddenly keeled over and didn't attempt to get up. It's not clear at this point what happened, but he is apparently conscious. Obviously, a scary situation. We'll update his condition when more is known.

Sat Oct 23 201020:38Browns LB Benard questionable for Week 7
LB Marcus Benard (personal) is listed as questionable for Week 7.
Benard backs up LOLB Matt Roth, who will start at New Orleans. The Browns should get pasted by the Saints, with or without Benard.

Tue Aug 17 201012:25Linebacker Benard moves into starting lineup
Browns OLB Marcus Benard moved into the starting lineup Tuesday, pushing Scott Fujita inside with Chris Gocong.
Fujita will fill in for D'Qwell Jackson (pectorals), who is out anywhere from 3-8 weeks. Benard has as much pass rushing potential as any player on the Browns defense, racking up at least a half-sack in each of the final four games of 2009. Fujita is a better fit on the inside, so the move makes sense all around.
