Tue Mar 1 201116:14Giants hand Cofield a second-round tender
Giants extended a second-round restricted free agent tender to NT Barry Cofield.
It's the same tender Cofield played under last season. It's unlikely to stick this time around since Cofield has accrued five seasons. The Giants nearly traded Cofield last year, and they're not expected to make him a priority this offseason with Linval Joseph waiting in the wings.

Fri Feb 4 201118:27Re-signing of Cofield a 'bonus' for G-Men?
ESPN New York calls calls the Giants' potential re-signing of free agent NT Barry Cofield "a bonus."
Beat writer Ohm Youngmisuk suggests the Giants may prefer going with 2010 second-round pick Linval Joseph to paying Cofield a mega-deal. Cofield is an excellent run defender with some ability to collapse the pocket, but he's been playing on a fourth-rounder's contract and will likely be looking to max out.

Tue Jan 4 201111:15Cofield to have offseason shoulder surgery
Impending free agent DT Barry Cofield will undergo offseason shoulder surgery.
It's probably just a routine scope. Cofield finished the final year of his rookie contract with career highs in tackles (54) and sacks (4), while continuing to play stout run defense. He'd be a big loss if the Giants let him walk.

Fri May 14 201008:33Barry Cofield signs Giants' tender offer
Giants re-signed restricted free agent NT Barry Cofield to a one-year, $1.759 million contract.
Cofield was nearly traded to the Saints during the draft after a disappointing 2009 season on the heels of microfracture knee surgery. He insists he's now back to full health, and the Giants have taken him off the trading block. Cofield will return as a starter in 2010.

Tue May 11 201010:54Saints were ready to trade for Barry Cofield
The Saints reportedly had the No. 64 overall pick on the table for Giants NT Barry Cofield during last month's draft.
Talks fell apart, however, after the Giants used the 46th overall pick on DT Linval Joseph, and Cofield and the Saints were unable to work a long-term deal. Cofield is no longer on the trading block, and will likely retain his starting job. He has yet to sign his RFA tender, but figures to shortly.

Mon Apr 26 201012:50Report: Giants, Saints nearly made trade
The Giants and Saints nearly executed a trade that would've sent NT Barry Cofield to New Orleans for a second-day pick.
A second-day pick in the new format is either a second- or third-rounder. This probably explains the Saints' reach for LSU NT Al Woods in the fourth round. Cofield still hasn't signed his one-year tender -- to our knowledge -- but Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Leger seconds NFL Network's report.

Thu Apr 15 201017:52Cofield had microfracture surgery in 2009
Giants DT Barry Cofield revealed that he did undergo microfracture surgery on his knee last year after all.
Cofield first had his patella tendon reconstructed, and then he underwent the microfracture surgery when doctors found his cartilage wearing away. Cofield admitted that he didn't feel good during last year's disappointing season, but he says he's now recovered a year after the surgery. Cofield's experience doesn't bode well for Kenny Phillips chances at effectiveness early this season.
