Sat Mar 8 201423:02Giants inquire about Alterraun Verner
The Giants have "inquired" about free agent CB Alterraun Verner.
Verner's market is red hot as of late Saturday, and his price tag rose when the Packers unexpectedly handed Sam Shields a deal worth $9.75 million per year. Verner is going to command more than that. The Giants look to be actively trying to upgrade their defense in free agency, also pursuing DL Arthur Jones.

Sat Mar 8 201417:20Report: Jets interested in Alterraun Verner
The New York Post reports the Jets are interested in free agent CB Alterraun Verner.
It confirms the Jets are still fully expected to release Antonio Cromartie and could look to replace him if he's not open to reworking his contract. Verner has also drawn interest from the Vikings and Rams since the NFL's negotiating window opened on Saturday.

Sat Mar 8 201415:39Vikings interested in CB Alterraun Verner
ESPN 1500 Twin Cities reports the Vikings are showing interest in free agent CB Alterraun Verner.
Verner played under DB coach Jerry Gray in Tennessee the last three seasons, so the dots certainly connect. The Vikings also had one worst pass defenses in the league last year and have yet to re-sign Chris Cook. Verner is a top-two free-agent corner and could command $10 million annually. Minnesota has roughly $41 million in 2014 cap space.

Fri Mar 7 201419:37Titans haven't had any talks with CB Verner
The Titans haven't had any recent talks regarding a contract extension for free agent CB Alterraun Verner.
It confirms that Verner will be allowed to reach the open market, as expected. A top-two free-agent corner, Verner could approach $10 million annually.

Mon Mar 3 201420:55Verner not particularly open to discount
Free agent CB Alterraun Verner didn't sound as if he is particularly open to giving the Titans a hometown discount.
"I love being here, I love my teammates and I love Tennessee. When it comes to the money, it is not like I need to be paid super high," Verner said. "From a business standpoint, you don't know how long you are going to play in this league, so you have to take advantage when you can." Verner is going to be paid handsomely as a top-two free-agent corner, and signs have pointed to the Titans moving on due to money. Verner is just 25 and could approach $10 million annually.

Mon Mar 3 201416:33Titans 'aren't close' with Alterraun Verner
The Nashville Tennessean reports the Titans "aren't close" to a deal with free agent Alterraun Verner.
The Titans failed to apply the franchise tag by Monday's deadline, meaning there's now nothing standing between Verner and the open market. Still only 25, Verner is one of the top two corners available after Brent Grimes re-signed with the Dolphins. He's going to get a fat contract.

Thu Feb 27 201413:48Report: 'No real progress' in Verner talks
The Nashville Tennessean reports there's been "no real progress" between the Titans and free agent Alterraun Verner.
The Tennessean reported last week that Verner "could prove to be too expensive" for the Titans coming off his breakout season. The Titans apparently don't consider the $11.2 million franchise tag an option with LCB Jason McCourty set to earn $6.5 million in 2014. Only 25 years old, Verner is the No. 11 overall player in Evan Silva's Free Agent Top 150.

Thu Feb 20 201422:58Alterraun Verner out of Titans' price range?
The Nashville Tennessean reports the Titans remain interested in re-signing Alterraun Verner, but that he "could prove to be too expensive."
Verner is committed to testing the market, and the Titans reportedly have "no plans" to use the franchise tag. That means he'll go to the highest bidder, and Tennessee apparently has little interest in being the highest bidder. Verner had a breakout season in 2013, and will draw major free agent interest.

Thu Feb 20 201412:47Verner's agent meeting with TEN at Combine
The player rep for free agent CB Alterraun Verner will meet with the Titans during the Combine.
The Titans are hoping to get a deal done before March 11, but that might not be possible. Verner would be wise to test the market and max out as he comes off a career season that saw him grade out as a top-12 corner per PFF. The Titans are not expected to use the $11.2 million franchise tag on Verner as they've already committed $6.5 million to Jason McCourty in 2014. The Rams and Vikings could show interest here.

Wed Feb 19 201416:01Rams could go after free agent CB Verner
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch "would be surprised" if the Rams didn't make an effort to sign free agent CB Alterraun Verner.
It's easy to connect the dots here. Coach Jeff Fisher drafted Verner in Tennessee, and new DC Gregg Williams was on the Titans staff for Verner's career-year in 2013. Williams even mentioned Verner at his introductory press conference with the Rams. However, at some point, the Titans-to-Rams big-money-free-agent pipeline needs to stop. The Rams whiffed on CB Cortland Finnegan and last offseason's signing of Jared Cook left much to be desired. Verner would probably fare better than both, but the Rams need to start seeing some production from draft picks like CBs Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson.

Fri Feb 14 201417:13Titans not expected to franchise CB Verner
The Nashville Tennessean doesn't expect the Titans to use the franchise tag on free agent CB Alterraun Verner.
Verner is coming off a breakout season that saw him grade out as a top-12 corner by Pro Football Focus and is expected to command big money on the open market. With $6.5 million already committed to Jason McCourty in 2014, the Titans are unlikely to meet his asking price. Tennessee has solid depth at cornerback and could move forward with Blidi-Wreh Wilson, Tommie Campbell, and Coty Sensabaugh behind McCourty. Verner would cost the Titans roughly $11.2 million to franchise and is expected to test free agency.

Thu Jan 30 201412:43Alterraun Verner a potential target for MIN
ESPN Vikings blogger Ben Goessling considers free agent CB Alterraun Verner a potential target for Minnesota.
The Vikings gave up the most passing touchdowns and second-most passing yards in the league in 2013. There's a connection to Verner in new defensive backs coach Jerry Gray, who was the Titans' defensive coordinator from 2011-13. Coming off a breakout season that saw him grade out as a top-12 corner per Pro Football Focus, Verner is our No. 3 free agent CB behind only Brent Grimes and Aqib Talib.

Tue Jan 14 201422:51Alterraun Verner 'not afraid' to test market
Speaking in a Tuesday radio interview, impending free agent CB Alterraun Verner reiterated that he hopes to re-sign with the Titans, but that he's "not afraid" to test the open market.
One of 2013's true breakout players, Verner would command a pretty penny if he made it to the open market. The odds of that actually happening are slim, however. If the sides can't reach a long-term agreement, Verner will likely be slapped with the franchise tag. Just one month removed from his 25th birthday, Verner played 1,023 snaps this season, grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 12 overall corner. Opposing quarterbacks had a 54.7 QB rating when throwing in Verner's direction. He picked off five passes.

Fri Dec 27 201309:16Alterraun Verner wants to be back with Titans
Impending free agent RCB Alterraun Verner said he'd like to re-sign with the Titans.
Verner is in the midst of a career-year in the final year of his rookie deal. The 104th pick of the 2010 draft earned the starting right corner job out of training camp and responded with five interceptions and 22 pass breakups. According to Pro Football Focus, quarterbacks have a 54.7 passer rating while throwing at Verner. Only Richard Sherman has a better mark. Verner is 25 years old.

Mon Sep 2 201314:48Titans name Verner starting RCB
The Titans have named Alterraun Verner their starting right cornerback.
Coty Sensabaugh will be the first-team nickel back. The Titans tried every way possible to get Verner out of the starting lineup, drafting two cornerbacks in April and attempting to promote Tommie Campbell onto the first team. Campbell flopped, and neither of the rookies made any training camp noise. Verner is a suspect fit for Tennessee's new press-man scheme in the secondary, but he's their best option opposite LCB Jason McCourty.

Thu Jun 6 201314:23Verner getting looks at safety for Titans
Titans CB Alterraun Verner has been getting some looks at free safety in OTAs.
Verner, at 5-foot-10 and 187 pounds, isn't a great fit for Tennessee's new press-man cover scheme. Tommie Campbell (6-foot-3, 205) has been getting some first-team cornerback reps in Verner's place. The Titans also drafted Blidi Wreh-Wilson in the third round of April's draft. Verner might have to settle for nickel duties in 2013, the final year of his rookie deal.

Fri May 31 201313:44Alterraun Verner's role may change
The Nashville Tennessean suggests CB Alterraun Verner's role may change because he's not a great fit for the Titans' new press-man scheme.
Verner has arguably been Tennessee's top corner the past two seasons, but he's viewed as more of a zone defender who can play outside and inside, and even safety in a pinch. Verner is entering the final season of his rookie contract. The Titans seem unlikely to explore a pre-camp extension with the 24-year-old.

Thu Jan 31 201302:32Titans CB Verner triggers 2013 escalator
Titans CB Alterraun Verner's 2013 salary jumped from $575,000 to $1.323 million based on rookie-deal incentives.
Verner, a 2010 fourth-round pick out of UCLA, started all 16 games at right corner in 2012, recording 81 tackles, nine passes defensed, and two interceptions. However, he tailed off at the end of the year, and third-year corner Tommie Campbell may push Verner inside to the slot in 2013. Verner is entering the final year of his deal.

Sat May 26 201211:30Titans using Verner in Finnegan's old role
Alterraun Verner is working in the old Cortland Finnegan role during Titans Organized Team Activities.
Verner is the RCB in Tennessee's base defense, and covers the slot in nickel. As Finnegan showed, it's a productive spot from an IDP standpoint. "I like being inside, being with the linebackers, getting to blitz and guard some of the slot guys because that is where the ball goes most the time with the Wes Welkers and great tight ends," Verner explained. "They like to work those areas."

Thu Oct 14 201008:53Verner could remain starter
Titans LCB Alterraun Verner could keep his starting job even after Jason McCourty returns from injury.
Verner replaced McCourty in Week 3 and has 26 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery in three games since then. "We'll face that when J-Mac is ready to come back,'' coach Jeff Fisher said. "The race was very, very close to start with (between McCourty and Verner)." McCourty could return by the end of the month.
